Very much enjoyed this wine. Bright and dramatic with flavors of fig, marzipan, and touch of hibiscus. Deep luscious, with a long finish. Can't see how anyone would dislike this wine.

A wine before its time. A bit tense and fidgety. tart, lemon zest, some mineral and a touch of apricot. Has what it needs and will show better in 3-4 years.

Very tasty but predominantly yeast and brioche flavors and aromas overtake the fruit. Fairly light on its feet and the acid is prominent. It just hasn't all come together yet.

Explosive flavors, mostly plum and prune with a slight roasted character and a hint of barnyard. Impressive but not fabulous.

Very fine wine, showing no fading at 7 years. Big butterscotch brûlée flavors coming form the oak with some sweet honey and even a touch of lychee. A California attempt at Corton Charlemagne which isn't quite that but still very fine wine.

Still big and brambly with primary blackberry flavors but this has really come into its own and is drinking quite nicely though with still a few good years ahead of it. Would still decant an hour or two before drinking this one.

Really excellent wine at the top of its form today. It's sad that the first thing one needs to say about a white burgundy is that it has no flaws - and this wine has none. It is full, smooth, lush sweet with notes of apricot, caramelized peaches, a hint of mint and (somehow) a touch of sweet cherry. Dazzling on the palate; shows what great winemaking can do in a great region when there are no problems afflicting the bottle.

What a surprise. I had no expectation of this wine and it turned out to be deep, rich, delicious, extracted but not over the top, voluptuous, black fruited, with a hint of spice (nutmeg/cinnamon) that just brought out a bit more interest. Very good juice that is probably just emerging from its ugly duckling phase.

Very tasty wine and well made in the manner of highly extracted Cal Cabs. Not as smooth as a comparable wine from Harlan or Bond but well-made and drinking well (in its own style) now. I think it will stay at this level for 5 more years.

Very pretty wine. On top of its game after a brief decant. Matched nicely with leg of lamb. These wines seem to peak some 12-15 years after the vintage.

I bought this a few years after release and when opened now the cork was dry and crumbly and the wine, while palatable, was just a shadow of what was in a well-kept wine that I had just a month ago. Sad, but we'll just move on to the next bottle of something else.

Very nice, rich, bright wine with some underlying austerity. Full but balanced. The poet in the room said that it smelled like the air before a sandstorm.

Drinking very nicely right now. This is the best bottle I have had of this wine. Bready, nutty and full on the palate without any astringency or metallic quality. Rich, beautiful and easy to drink.. Now is the time.

This is the old fashioned cal chard of my youth. All butter and vanilla and oak sitting on top of the fruit. I used to love this style and would sip at a glass for hours but now it seems too over the top and artificial. Good in its style, but not what I'm looking for today.

Liked this wine quite a bit, even more so on the second day, even though it was never really too big even on the open. Very broad flavor profile that spreads out across the back of the tongue. Red fruits and cola flavors dominate. There is a lot going on here and it's difficult to pick out all the components but the overall package is very nice. Probably at or very close to its peak and I would prefer to drink now rather than hold.

I've never been too enthusiastic about this particular wine, esp in this vintage. Early on, it was tannic and scratchy and now that the fruit is receding, it has developed a bit of a nice earthy flavor but it's not enough to hold the wine together. It's also fairly light now, borderng on watery. Just not my favorite profile.

Agree with those who find this too young at this point. Overwhelming flavors and aroma of yeast, bread, biscuit with some underlying mineral and acid notes. If the yeast notes resolve and reveal what's underneath, this could emerge as a fine champagne but it will take some time.

1996 Château Léoville Las Cases

Really starting to open up and show what it has. This was undrinkable for about 15 years and now is very beautiful. Chocolate, cedar, licorice, black fruit, maybe a hint of cinnamon. Will drink well for a long time.

This was opened at a Las Cases vertical along with the 75, 83, 86, 89, 90, 94, 00 and 03. Didn't take notes on every one but the winners were the 75 (astonishingly vibrant and put together), the 86 (classic Las Cases, and this 96. The 00 was completely closed down and the 03 surprisingly open. The value proposition was the 94 which was drinking very nicely and is quite affordable if you can find it.

Score is for today and may increase with time. Tasted next to the 95 Unico, this was more open, rounder, fuller, and more balanced, but also slightly less interesting. Will be incredibly interesting to follow the evolution of these over the next 20 years or so. I think this will be better in the next decade and the individual vintages (91, 94, 95) better after that. Looks to me that in blending the vintages, they go for more harmony but maybe less ultimate greatness. Will have to see.

I always say that I love Vega Sicilia, but what I really mean is that I love 30-40 year old Vega Sicilia from a great vintage. This may get there but the tannins are still very pronounced and they almost, but not completely obscure everything that might be going on underneath. I'll hold off a score and come back in ten years or so.
