2008 Pere Mata Cava Cuvée Barcelona Brut

Macabeo-Xarel-lo-Parellada Blend more

7/4/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 91 points

Another outstanding expression from Pere Mata. Bone dry, but still voluptuous and sultry. Smooth and gentle yeasties, apple, lemon, cashews, kiwifruit, and sourdough, then a mineral and acidic flood carries that bouquet through a respectable finish. Even seems a bit on the young side, so considering the price (and the fact that the mrs. loves it) it's worth a big re-buy. 5+11+17+8= 91

2006 Carmelo Patti Malbec

Lujan de Cuyo more

6/30/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 90 points

Notes after following for 24 hrs open. Very dark ruby, almost opaque with a garnet rim. Clear and very slow legs, no sediment. Profound aroma. Cherry, violet, lavender, tar, and mature balsamic notes. The prunes of age also become more apparent as it airs out. The palate was pretty rough for the first several hours, before I felt the structure aligned with the bouquet and before I took real notice of the nice acidity that is still holding the wine together. The tannins seemed to keep their light grip from mid-palate through the long finish. A lot of savory, balsamic action going on here. I would like to try again in a year or two. If you don't like aged wines, it may be too late for you already on this. 5+11+16+8= 90

2013 Guenoc Petite Sirah California

6/27/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 84 points

'02 Guenoc PS was the wine that got me into wine. Haven't tried any since '05 vintage and when I saw this at TJ's, I had to part with the $8. I know these grapes come from outside Lake County, but it still makes a pretty good impression. Singular and simple, lots of tannins and good acidity, the flavor is varietally correct and pretty much how I remember it from 10 years ago. What I really wish, is that they still produced the fabulous PS port that I used to enjoy from Langtry/Guenoc. 4+9+14+7=84

2012 Captûre Wines Sauvignon Blanc Tradition

Sonoma Valley more

Improvement over a year ago, to my taste anyway. Needed about an hour of air time to settle in. The tropical flavors stretch out longer and are better stitched to the acidity and minerality. Really great stuff here. Drink through 2016. 5+12+18+7 = 92

2011 McPrice Myers Beautiful Earth

Paso Robles Syrah Blend, Syrah more

6/23/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 91 points

Extra dark purple, almost opaque with very slow, tinted legs. No sediment present. I followed this bottle for three days open and the bouquet transitioned from bold and brambly to complex and charming. The palate took off with a great start on night 1, being delicious and luxurious in flavors and texture. A good representation of why I buy McPM. Second night it seemed a bit out of whack with tannins so I finished it off on night 3 and it was excellent again. Different from night 1 but still showing nice class, persistence, and a very long finish. High abv, yes, but we know that going into this region. I think this may just want another year or two to really peak. At the $35 level, a reasonable treat. 5+11+17+8 = 91

2011 Kerloo Cellars Majestic

Walla Walla Valley Red Rhone Blend more

6/20/2015 - fingers wrote: 90 points

From my first bottle last September to this one now, the wine has done what I hoped it would do. Namely, shed some youthful greenness and find better balance with the oak notes. Really comes across like a decent CdP now and more subtleties are being allowed to express themselves. The Mourvèdre is showing nicely in the mix. Good right from the pop and although it held up well for 24 hours, it did not change much with air. Might even go a notch or two higher with another year laying down. 5+11+16+8 = 90

2012 Château Val Joanis Luberon Tradition

Roussanne more

6/18/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 88 points

Notes after 2 hours open. Light straw yellow color with quick legs on the glass. Heavy tartrate sediment in the bottom of bottle. Honeysuckle, white jasmine, lanolin in a modestly powered nose. I like the viscosity and weight as it coats the entire mouth with the gentle and subtle notes that were featured in the bouquet. Nothing jumps out at you, but the complete package is there in terms of acidity-sugars-minerality and persistence. I enjoyed quaffing this just on its own. You should, too. 4+10+16+8=88

2010 Maison Bleue Gravière Upland Vineyard

Yakima Valley Snipes Mountain Red Rhone Blend more

6/18/2015 - fingers wrote: NR

Followed this bottle for two days open. It was tough to define until the very end, when I feel it finally showed its true character. Early on, it was really crunchy and tight, some green meany-ness and unruly tannins. But the fruit and bouquet are nice, so you keep pushing through, trying to draw out a more satisfying impression. After subjecting the second half of the bottle to vigorous aeration, abuse, and even some cold and heat shock, I've got the wine I want. Smoother, more cohesive, and still there's a feeling it has more to give as it matures. I think I'll wait at least a year on my remaining bottles.

Paso Robles Red Blend more

6/15/2015 - fingers wrote: 90 points

60/40 Merlot/Cab.
Popped, poured, and followed for about 6 hours open.
Very dark magenta-ruby color, about 90% opaque, no sediment.
Seems a little energy is lacking in the aroma but it still has the proper elements of blackcurrant, licorice, fig, dates, light oak, and alcohol that is unfortunately, too typical of the region. Way too aggressive for the first hour or so and I would be concerned about any open flames nearby;) But the palate melded it all together once oxygen took it's due effect. Smooth and resolved tannins, just enough acidity and no need to hold any longer. French dip or prime rib is calling. 5+10+17+8 = 90

Very light straw color. Broad and vibrant mousse with large bubbles.
Gentle intensity bouquet with firm citrus, light creme friache, and a clamshell-like minerality. Appropriately dry. Slight hint of SO2 blew off in a few minutes. Light to medium body, high acidity. Bright and crisp with good potential to reward patience. 4+11+17+8=89

2014 Renegade Wine Co. Rosé

Columbia Valley Rosé Blend more

6/11/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: NR

Pretty tough to write a tasting note on a wine that disappears from the bottle so fast. Just so easy to drink and paired wonderfully with a Sushi salmon roll, Kung Pao Beef, Sha Cha Chicken, and Budda's feast of vegetables. I would try this with anything from corned beef to sea bass.

2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Clos du Bourg

Chenin Blanc more

6/9/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 93 points

I think mycellar01's note is spot on. From appearance to bouquet, I completely agree with his findings. It isn't as heavy as Sauternes and the flavors are Chenin all the way. I enjoyed this immensely more than the 2002 Le Monts 1ere trie. Followed this 375ml for five days open, storing in the fridge overnight and it never lost its verve or balance. 5+12+18+8= 93

Notes after 6 hours open. It took about an hour for it to show properly.
Color is dark, aged brick garnet. About 90% opaque with slow legs and negligible sediment.
The aroma is confident and pure. Featuring cherry, licorice, tobacco, and florals. Almost fully resolved structure and harmonious balance on the palate. Long finish and overall, quite lovely. Completely fell apart on the second day and was barely drinkable. 4+12+17+8= 91

2010 Bernard Vallette Beaujolais Quatre Saisons

Gamay more

6/8/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: NR

I think this is progressing along quite well. The young, sharp, sour grip and high acidity has softened into a lightly tart pull on the fruit so there is better balance between the two. A little bit of aged Gamay character is coming out now and should just continue to improve for a few more years. Saving my last one for another year, at least.

Light gold color, quick legs. Very soft nose shows some minerality, citrus, hazelnut, a touch of jasmine. Not a lot going on here, really. Maybe past prime, not sure. The palate is pleasant enough in structure and balance but I just wish there was a bit more fruit essence. I don't think there's enough stuffing for longer term aging. 4+9+16+7=86

2010 CT Barrel Project Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mtn/Rutherford Blend

Napa Valley more

6/5/2015 - fingers wrote: NR

This came together after an hour of open air, which was not the case with my first bottle. That one was quirky on night 1 and rounded out on day2. Harmony between fruit, barrel, structure, and elevage seem to be at cruising altitude now and could hold steady for a couple more years. Again, I really appreciate how this performed with a meal. In this case, BBQ, so it wasn't any stretch, but even after the meal this was keeping up with a smooth cigar.

2010 CT Barrel Project Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford more

5/30/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 90 points

This bottle impressed me quite a bit more than my first one, some two months ago. The bouquet was consistent from pop to punt without the notes of over-extraction that I sensed the first time.
Adequate supply of acidity, smooth and resolving tannins with a lengthy fruit presence complete the palate. More feminine in nature, and a really nice juxtaposition to stereotypical Napa cabs. Not sure if my first bottle was a little off or what, but this deserves a point boost in my tasting notes. 5+11+16+8= 90

2010 Echo Ridge Cellars Syrah Echo Ridge Vineyard

Columbia Valley more

5/26/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 points

Almost a year since my only other bottle and I like it even more this time. Appearance unchanged. The bouquet is just beautiful with lots of flowers, fruit, earth, wood, bacon, and pepper. Concentrated and plush on the palate with a clean, long finish, only marred by a bit of overreach from the alcohol. Really much more Paso-like than OR/WA, and there's nothing wrong with that. Seems to be performing in its prime age-wise, and I wish I had more in the cellar. 5+12+17+8=92

5/24/2015 - fingers wrote: NR

Notes on second half of a bottle that was opened yesterday.
Very dark purple ink color, fine and abundant sediment. Unfortunately, this really turned poorly overnight and the bouquet went stewy and borderline port-ish.
The energy and snap it had yesterday is gone and the flavors come across as muddled and flat. If scoring, 91-92 range on day 1, 86-87 range on day 2. Really a dramatic decline with the slow-O, so I would recommend just getting this in your glass within a few hours of opening.

2010 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Paso Robles more

5/23/2015 - fingers wrote: 90 points

Notes after following for 24 hrs open. Almost fully opaque dark purple color, very slow and lightly tinted legs, modest sediment.
Bouquet was wrapped up very tight for the first few hours except for a high dose of Zippo lighter fluid, eventually displaying bold blackberry and currant, violets, bright spices and a bit of flinty sulphur. Petit Verdot and the other Bordeaux grapes used are definitely in play here.
Palate is big, luscious, and ripe. Backed up with long and firm tannins, this may deserve another few years to reach its prime. Considering the pedigree, price, and future potential, this seems pretty fair on the QPR side of things. 4+12+16+8=90

Still drinking in perfect form. Sleek and smooth with nice cocoa and cherry highlights. Clean and pure, no sediment or chewy tannins so I'm thinking this would be great with some cheesecake. Or, of course, always great with a smoke. Just shows that domestic Petite Sirah can hang with some of the best Portugese wines. 5+11+18+9 = 93

Pinot Noir more

5/16/2015 - fingers wrote: 86 points

Very light ruby red color, almost rose'. Clear and shimmery.
Light aroma of crushed leaves and dried cherries. The palate is just like biting into an almost ripe cherry - a little bit sour and grippy - just like a village Burg should be. Alas, in a display of pedigree and varietal, there is a lot of nuance in the background through the finish. More time should also bring out more secondary notes and in a year or so, I think the harshness will temper into a more savory experience. 5+9+14+8 = 86

5/15/2015 - fingers Likes this wine: 91 points

Very light gold hue, bright and shiny.
Medium-powered nose invokes apple, lemon, honeydew, white grapefruit, schist and limestone. Very little, if any sign of wood.
Creamy and full, a bit hot, but overall I think this is a wonderful interpretation of Chardonnay from a Macon point of view. I also perceive low-ish acidity but it seems offset by the minerality and body. Chablis, without the "cut". And at the $16 level, a very good deal.

Patience may or may not be it's own reward but it sure helped this wine out. It's been two years since my other tasting and 9 months since anyone has noted here, but this wine has really come around.
Still quite a cloudy cranberry red, about 60% opaque. Profound nose of crushed berry and autumn leaf, roses, mushroom, damp earth funk, and strawberry. It just kept building and developing over the 3 hours of tasting. The palate has emerged with cohesion and harmony compared to how it was two years ago. Regarding the slight green medicinal note, I find it adds some interest as opposed to distraction at this stage. Maybe the most interesting wine I've tried this year. Those of you that have waited, I hope you enjoy as much as I did today. 3+13+17+7 = 90
