Numerous experience already with this wine but the first attempt at some qualitaitve opinion. Pale yellow, deceivingly light in colour. But what a nose; intensity of stone and fruit with a lovely touch of yeast. Zesty on the palate with a nice nuttiness about it. I swear that this was close to a Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Caillerets 2002 had a couple of nights back so this was no slouch with a price ratio of 3:1! The acidity was decent giving the wine a nice balance. At the finish, a hint of heat, perhaps the key betrayal of a new world white. Finisih was a little short, the other disappointment on an otherwise lovely mouthfeel. At this price point, thie wine is still punching above its weight. I would buy this by the case.

Yellow gold in appearance. Non dosage and clearly apparent from the go. Aromatically mineral with hints of citrus. Not particularly strong on fruits, veering towards the greenish spectrum. Lemon! Lean and taut with good purity. Finish was somewhat short with a trace of bitterness but at the same time a lingering returning sweetness of fruit that was lacking on the palate. With food, this champy took on a dimension of richness and weightiness. On the palate, developed some softness and roundness though by any imagaination still a structured wine. This bottle was disappointing compared to previous better bottles I've had, perhaps an off bottle. Needs a retry.

I am falling way behind with my tasting notes but i think i need to get this one out! There are reasons why some wines are trophy wines but if you are someone who enjoys drinking as both a pleasure and complement to dinner, this wine comes highly recommended, period! Initially garnet with a slight brownish rim, the colour took on a darker tone on the second day. The nose was absolutely gorgeous; cedar with cassis. Initially, sweetness on the palate with black curranty fruits. Medium body; lighter on the first day but weightier on the second day. This wine developed a better structutre and some emerging earthiness. If nitpicking, the complexity was lesser and the finish was shorter than what i would have liked. However, the structural development on the second day and the fine acidity of this wine gave me confidence that it should continue to improve in the bottle for another year or two. But this is already so delicious that if you have a case, I see no wrong in drinking it now. On sale at SGD55/bottle, this wine puts to shame many wines in the same price point. A good friend has this La Grave as a house pour; if only i could afford to, I cant agree more! This may not necessarily be a complete wine; but dont think so much, just drink it!

2008 Simonnet-Febvre Chablis

Chardonnay more

Pale straw colour from a 375ml. Nose of lemon, toasted bread, and a hint of chenin sweetness. Initially on the palate, somewhat tropical, atypical of a chablis? On its components, medium body, good fruit and intensity. Somehow on the whole, it appeared underwhelming at times and overly soft, again not what one would tend to associate with a chablis. With airing and particularly food, this wine came into its own. The fruits took on a more citrus spectrum, the structure and the mineraliity took hold, and the acidity kicked in towards the finish, particularly palate smacking cleansing. This wine grew on me!

Touch of gold in appearance. Nose of bread and yeast. Delicate bubbles, very fine mousse here. Aromatically, good perfume and i got apples. Opulent with generous fruit and creamey. But at the same time, uplifting with a good balance. What stood out for me was a very, very long lingering finish with a touch of subtle sweetness. This is a soft approachable style but given time, I think it can only get better and i prefer my champy with some age. This champy is definitely a crowd pleaser but i think it can appeal to the serious drinker as well. One of my favourite NVs.

Sangiovese more

10/11/2011 - GaryLG wrote: NR

A tradiitional classic style of Brunello. Ruby red with a lighter hue to the edge, showing perhaps a little older than its age. On the nose, tar, smoke, cherry, and cinnamon. Weight was somewhat light to what i would typically expect from a brunello thought the wine gained in density through the course of the night. Balance was good with a nice touch of acidity that went well with food. Secondary development in its advanced stage. Resolved tannins for a fairly young brunello, in my opinion. A hint of bitterness into the dry finish. On the second day, this wine gained further in weight but fast shedding its fruit. I am somewhat wary on the longeveity of this wine. No reason to cellar further, drink up.

Fill at neck line was certainly a worrying sign. A fragile cork didnt help the cause. This was decanted to rid the sediments. A pale red colour. I was expecting a better nose to palate; alas, the palate actually came out better than the nose! Nose was tea and most of all pruney - I feared the worst but perhaps this is the characteristics of aged wine. On the palate, much more youthful! The mouthfeel was thicker than what the nose would have suggested. I got both red fruits and earthy flavours. Wasnt sure how long the fruits would have lasted though coz the wine was polished off in no time. A lingering minerality towards the finish. All about sophistication and charm. A perfect ending to a nite of get-together with wine kakis (wine pals). Tks to pal Kenny for sharing his DRC.

Colour a decent reddish brown but a orangey rim. This was a pop and pour. The nose speaks Rousseau; slightly candied with strong cherry notes. On the palate initially, good weight and balance with integrated tanins and a smooth finish. Good secondary development and complexity. Unfortunately, the acidity (the sour notes) became more pronounced over the half hour, more pertinently eclipsing the fruits. This wine needs drinking up.

2008 Stonier Chardonnay

Mornington Peninsula more

10/8/2011 - GaryLG wrote: NR

Yellowish with a slight greenish tinge. Nose was a clear giveaway of what one should expect - big, generous fruits mostly tropical, and vanillin. Good round palate with decent weight to the wine. Rich but at the same time balanced. The oak was evident but in such a young wine, surprisingly integrated that it wasnt a distraction. The finish was intense with a hint of heat. This wine is plain good drinking so dont look for complexity. The Stonier Chardonnay is good but at the same price point, I find a better wine in Voyager Estate Chardonnay or if one is looking for a better specimen of white Burgundy, the Cape Mentelle!

Magnum. This is a much overdue tasting note which should have come quick on the heels of the Jean Gros Richebourg 1992 drank on the same night. This wine was popped on a Sunday morning 10am, recorked, and left to sit till dinner on Monday evening. A surprising dark red colour hardly betraying the signs of its age. Thus, equally non surprising to see this wine opening up slightly tight. Nose was great - earthy, violets, and cassis. A structured palate of more black than red fruits. A quip would be that this wine didnt boast the concentration that one would have come to expect froma Comte Georges de Vogue? I would say the acidity was great for a wine of this age and the finish equally good. A true aristocrat but just lacked the wow factor of Jean Gros Richebourg 1992 tasted alongside. I might be wrong but the consistency of this wine from beginning to finish over the course of 2 hours led me to conclude that this wine is perhaps at its apogee; I would indeed be very surprised if this wine shows significant evolution. However, this fine showing for the first vintage of Vogue's 1er cru from young vines of Musigny augurs well for the future until the time when there is no longer any justification for such a bottling. A collectible in the making?

Disgorgement July 2008. On the first day, just not ready. Nice yellow golden colour. A decent mousse and a fairly expressive nose but otherwise, lean and taut with little fruit. On the second day is where this champy shone. Nose of fresh bread and yeast. What was evidently different from the first day was the fruit at the fore. Smooth, round, and creamy on the palate with a lovely mouthfeel balance. Finish of brioche and nectarine but slightly short. Nonetheless, simply delicious. Despite the disgorgement date, I think this still needs time to come around. But a repeat cusomter here. I like it!

1992 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg

Richebourg Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

10/5/2011 - GaryLG wrote: NR

Magnum. A garnet core giving little hint of the age of the wine which is close to 20 years. Initially a very muted nose that took a good half hour to really show. Once it did, whiffs of smoke, earth, and then that of berries that took on more of the floral spectrum when sat in the glass. On the palate, a sense of power but balanced with good weight. Felt surprisingly fresh and youthful, perhaps good provenance from a friend with a trusted cellar. Fruits veer towards that of red. Lovely extract and good concentration. Very velvety with a long sappy finish. Secondary development is in its infant stages but the complexity is already clearly evident. This wine really continues to pick up and improve over the course of the hour. It does suggest that this wine could continue to evolve. Given we had a few other mags to go, we probably didnt give this wine sufficient justice to show its best. This stood out for its exurberance next to the more aristocratic Comte de Vogue Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru 1995 we were to sample next. This was my WOTN.

Magnum. A deep golden yellow colour. An exotic nose of honey and caramel. Still full of fruit but clearly very tropical. On the palate, this wine has great concentration and was gripping for a wine of such age. Lovely mouthfeel and long finish. Blind, i would have said new world if not for a streak of biscuity that betrays a burgundian origin. This is still a keeper but already very nice. Generally not a fan of this style (this is a power styled burgundy) but I must confess that i am hooked. Interesting......would be nice to have a recent vintage from the same maker as comparison?

Magnum. Full of efferversense. Very fresh and young; younger than the usual 1985. Tangy. Took a while to settle though. Some in the group thought the palate wasnt as powerful as the nose suggested but then i wasnt expecting a bruiser of a wine from Deutz. i thought it had the perfect acidity balance, a nice follow-through from the nose to the palate, delicate n tingling. For me, the best part was after the dissipitation of the bubbles - this displayed a nice burgundian chardonnay touch. Great long finish. Nice start with spring rolls to a very good nite ahead.

750ml bottling consumed over 2 days. This was opened at noon, aired for an hour, stuffed back into the wine fridge, and left to aerate again for an hour before dinner of pasta and beef. Medium red with tinge of age on the edges. Lovely bouquet of rose and cedar. The initial impression of this wine was one of good fruit and juicy appeal. Immense drinkability and a style for the non-intellectual when you just want to relax with the family and enjoy the wine with loved ones. Not to say that this wine lacks complexity. The second day revealed more pronounced minerality with sour cherry notes; i liked it more on the 2nd day. Finish was long but seriously dry and puckering. This wine is as best as it can be, i will be drinking up my remaining bottles over the next year or two.

NV Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Cuvée Sainte Anne

Champagne Blend more

9/30/2011 - GaryLG wrote: NR

My introduction to Chartogne-Taillet was the rose but this was very different from the very full bodied Le Rose. This was in fact quite fine and came across delicate. I say that because the wine has 40% pinot but i could not tell; i say this could easily pass as a bdb. Lovely nose of yeast n apples. Once past the mousse, highly fruity but retains freshness, crispiness, and a welcoming acidity that made it delicious by itself but particularly more so with food. Fairly good complexity and I realised a buildup in sweetness too as it sat in the glass but in a good way. Disgorgement says 10/2010; i sense it wasnt as integrated yet with a toast that jarred the finish slightly.
