2011 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard

Yorkville Highlands more

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): I need more 2011 Copain Syrah.
I need LOTS more 2011 Copain Syrah.
Double decanted and back into bottle 3 hours in advance and then decanted about 45 minutes prior to tasting.
Bright, forward, grape sweet-tart flavors are covered with a wonderful herbal green exotic menthol/ginger note. Blast of white and black pepper punctuate the long finish.

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): Double decanted and back into bottle 3 hours in advance and then decanted about 45 minutes prior to tasting. This wine was a bit of a letdown; I had high expectations. Very little on the nose; air didn't help. On the palate there was a little dusty dark Syrah fruit but none of the power and backbone I was expecting. The acidity is decent but I will will bury my remaining bottle to see if it develops more secondary flavors. It wasn't bad, but not great. One taster did peg this as WOTD for her.

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): Love it!
Decanted for about two and half hours. It just smells like the village with lots of wild herb, a great mix of bright red and dark dusty fruit with a nice barnyard funk. This wine is already drinking well; I can just imagine what another ten years will do to it.

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): Tasted just after 2010 Janasse Chaupin and just before 2010 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Réservée. Decanted for two and a half hours. Of the seven wines on the tasting this was the favorite of no one and the least favorite most tasters (my least favorite). Right now this wine is a hot, bitter, dark-fruited, oaky mess. The fruit is muted; I get very little sense of place. Maybe it will come around at some point. I drank 2009 at the domaine in 2011 and absolutely loved it. I sure hope that time heals these wounds.

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): Dark cherry, evident wood tannins, soft acidity, heat. Finishes long but hot. This is not in a good place right now. We'll see if it ages.

4/12/2015 - S1 Likes this wine: NR

Blindly watching The Masters (Chez S1): Decanted for about an hour and served at a little above cellar temperature. Drank blind, side by side with a 2013 Liquid Farm White Hill. The tasting group was nearly evenly divided over which was old world and which was new. I absolutely loved this one. The mineral, saline(?), acidic intensity was like a laser beam. While there was lots of lean lemon, there was also a sweet-tart green apple which provided great balance. I sure am glad I have more.

Drank blind, side by side with a 2012 Billaud-Simon Chablis 1er Cru, Mont de Milieu Vv. The tasting group was nearly evenly divided over which was old world and which was new. The LF was a bit more forward, but with that great minerality and lemon zest. I loved the acid balance. There was also a little bit of golden fruit, dried guava or apricot. Another winner from Liquid Farm.

2012 Copain Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard

Anderson Valley more

3/6/2015 - S1 Likes this wine: NR

I needed a wine with some zingy fruit to balance a very earthy meal and this hit the spot. There is upfront young red fruit with a hint of blue on the finish. I get lots of tart cranberry with lively acidity and a great mineral undercurrent. My wife said, "SO Anderson Valley." I agree; I always find an intriguing dustiness on AV wines and this one has plenty to balance this pure fruit. There is a fun but of Indian spice on the finish. It will be hard to stay out of these but it should be a stunner in 5 or 6 years.

There is an inherent hint of rich sweetness on the nose which balances the oily rich Semillon and the floral Muscadelle. White flowers and Honeydew abound. The acidity is adequate for the full mouthfeel. I wish I could stay out of these long enough to see what they taste like with some age.

Corra Vertical: We have enjoyed quite a few of these bottles. It is starting to gain subtlety but still shows lots of apricot and honeycomb. Even though it is really rich, I still like the balance.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. We barrel tasted this with Celia several years ago and found this full of zingy red fruits. I still find them, with interesting acidity and light tannins. There is red plum to balance the dark Napa fruits.

On day 2, it is still brash and fun. This will be fun to track over the next 8-10 years.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. We barrel tasted this with Celia several years ago. It was pretty then, it is beautiful now. It is initially closed, but hints of greatness. While it is already very smooth and integrated, there is an interesting tartness on the finish which makes me love the wine even more.

On day 2 it has closed a little, but still delightful. I recommend 2 or 3 years before trying the next bottle.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. This one shows a real hot streak on the immediate attack, with a big punch of licorice and some tangy, yet lightly stewed fruits. Right now the tannins dominate; this obviously needs time. In five years this could be a world beater but not yet.

On day 2 the fruit has settled down but the tannins are really strong. Patience, patience, patience.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. Initially this is dusty with lots of tannic grip. On the palate it is a bit thin at the end, but still a marvelous example of Napa Cab.

On day 2, it has not changed much. It has maintained fruit but shows a tiny bit more finesse. Delicious.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. On night one this shows a green, menthol/bitter Eucalyptus quality that I frequently find on 05 Napa. The fruit is a little muted and the tannins are a bit out of balance compared to the o4.

On day 2, WOTD. Everything has integrated and this wine is singing, with vibrant Napa fruits and great tannin/acid balance.

Corra Vertical: Corra Vertical tasting. Very pretty, with lots of Mocha on the nose. After an hour or so it develops an interesting bitterness near the finish, before it smooths into great length.

On day 2 it has lost lots of fruit and is a little bit off balance. It is still a wonderful wine but has fallen from WOTD pedestal.

Corra Vertical: Has a rich, Napa Sauvignon Blanc quality on the nose even though there is no SB in the blend. After a few minutes, the great Viognier peaches emerge. I can also really taste the Riesling. Refreshing and delicious.

In spite of the vintage I find this bottle showing hints of the new world. There is a spicy, dark fruited quality with a bit of mocha and sweet tobacco. After a while in the glass the fruit fades somewhat and the tannins get more harsh. Still a fun bottle though.

This bottle leads with an immediate punch of cassis and follows with some saddle leather and some really dry, toasted oaky tannins. The alcohol seems a little out of balance initially but the bottle calmed down after about an hour in the glass. Decent QPR.

This one started with a big dose of green bell pepper and finished with rather bitter tannins. It is more red fruited than I expected and much of the fruit has faded, leaving the tannins to dominate. It isn't bad but not particularly exciting either.

We visited the Goutorbes and drank a bottle of this wine on our 26th anniversary; opening a bottle on our 29th seems symmetrical. I have always felt that this wine is a great QPR and this bottle does not disappoint. Floral rose, wild strawberry, even a little sweet red peach mingle into a tantalizing mix of acidic fruity integration. There is a hint of Amaro-type bitterness on the finish which ties everything together. Bravo Goutorbe family; I am a buyer for life.

Thick, rich mouthfeel with a balanced mix of sweet red and black fruits, but not over the top. Red plum, black cherry, licorice, spice, orange peel. This toes the 16% line but I find it to be less of a bruiser than the Saxum Syrahs.

4/11/2014 - S1 Likes this wine: NR

Obviously built to age. This was approachable at first sip and enjoyable throughout, although the tannins became more pronounced as the fruit faded a bit with air. This shows lovely structure with bright dark cherry and cranberry, complex spice flavors over a solid tannin backbone and a great acidic finish. In spite of the 100% whole cluster, I don't get pronounced stemmy flavors, just nice integration. I think Bob would have loved this in spite of the bright vintage. I will certainly enjoy tracking the progress of my remaining bottles.
