2011 Château Grand Jauga

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

6/29/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 89 points

Lovely balance and tension between sweet but fresh ripe fruit (apricot, peach), a hint of rôti, and bright acidity; flowers, salinity and lively bitters on the palate, touch of vanilla, lovely intensity and length. Fun and stylish Sauternes. At restaurant Kerckebosch, Zeist, NL.

This is so good. Fresh and floral, deep and earthy, blackcurrants and ripe red cherries, crushed red berries, glossy and fresh, warm spices, bright and lively, cheerful but serious, juicy and supple, with lovely tannic grip and good length. Good stuff. At restaurant Kerckebosch, Zeist, NL.

A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Malbec (!), a very digestible 12.5% ABV. Pale salmon colour; interesting nose, blackcurrant, white peach, citrus and hay; light but juicy palate, creamy yet crisp and refreshing, good flavour intensity, nice salty note; good length. Lovely wine, excellent QPR.

Recent bottling. Classic Malmsey nose, good definition and depth, fruit, nuts and Scotch; there is a good tangy, acidic kick on the palate and intensity and length are absolutely fine, but mid-palate the wine is just too sweet, soft and sticky. It reminds me of an Oloroso that has ODed on the PX - the sugar coating takes away the precision and definition. But a solid 10 YO none the less. Good value too.

Now this is really something else. Menthol and cool minerals, bitter grapefruit and white peach, hint of honey, earth, beautiful tension between the natural sweetness of the ripe fruit and the crisp acidity, very good length. More about power than about precision, but certainly a very individualistic wine with real drive and lots of interest.

After two less-than-perfect specimens, this is again a good one. Pristine bottle, 30 minute decant. Mature, elegant, middle weight, beautifully balanced, harmonious and flowing, mellow and stylish. Not the most extraverted of wines but its subtle charms are quite considerable.

2009 Château Le Boscq St. Estèphe

Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/27/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 90 points

In stark contrast to the bottle tasted in December 2014, this does display its Saint-Estèphe terroir very well and does not overwhelm it with the weight of its ripe Merlot fruit or its luscious oak. Rich but not jammy, rounded and really well-balanced, earth and graphite, middle-grained tannins are ripe but still a bit grippy, clean flavours, good length. A complete wine that needs two years and will last another five to ten, but I question its ability to really improve beyond what it is now.

Cafayate more

6/27/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 88 points

This is quite an intriguing wine, a putative cross between the richness of a Viognier (apricot, honey, bitters), the freshness and floral character of a Riesling, with a dash of grassy Sauvignon Blanc. A such it is an excellent expression of this most original grape variety, not very refined but with lovely intensity and tension.

1989 Gérard Bertrand Rivesaltes

Grenache more

6/27/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 90 points

Mature orange tawny colour; open and attractive nose with ripe Grenache fruit (fresh and candied), praliné and a hint of smoke from the wood; silky, soft and seamless palate, bitter-sweet, very fresh and lively for a 26 year old wine, subtle savoury note, light flavours; complete finish, no heat, good length. Really nice but not profound, lacks complexity. Cheap as chips though.

2013 Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Soalheiro Reserva

Vinho Verde more

6/26/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 91 points

Fermented and aged in new and used oak barrels, kept on the fine lees with regular bâtonnage until bottling in June 2014. This wine has been made with real sensitivity; the oak is subtle and does not dominate the inherent freshness, salinity and citric elegance of the wine but supports and adds depth; on the palate there is lovely additional leesy complexity, roundness and weight from the bâtonnage, with a lovely savoury note and juicy fruit flavours; complete finish, good length. Excellent.

The nose is as fresh, subtle and complex as it was in April 2014; much to its favour, the palate on the other hand has fleshed out slightly and has gained in roundness and weight, with just a hint of nuttiness in the flavours; complete finish with lovely length.

Bottling date not specified but clearly very recent. Beautiful medium orange gold shot with amber (like an old Sauternes or Tokaji); discreet nose, fresh style, subtle note of candied fruit, light caramel, sea breeze and a floral top note; the medium-dry palate displays admirable concentration and power, peach, mouthwatering acidity and quite austere, salty concentration; very dry finish with lemon fruit. Impressive. Not everybody's cup of tea but I like it a lot.

2014 Domaine des Jougla Saint-Chinian Initiale

Syrah Blend, Syrah more

6/24/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 87 points

A blend of 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre; schist and clay soils. Grapes harvested "at reasonable maturity" to preserve freshness and fermented at a cool temperature to preserve the bright fruit. This approach has clearly been successful, as the resulting rosé is soft and creamy but fresh and vibrant, with fruit of pear and peach and notes of herbs and grass, hint of white pepper, good length. Attractive wine and excellent QPR.

Mencia appears to be quite a chameleon of a grape, which (depending on the style of winemaking) can mimic Pinot Noir (Raul Perez) or Cabernet Franc (Pittacum) and judging from this bottle even Barbera! Delicious and stylish, soft tannins, ripe fruit and warm spices, fresh acidity, clean and intense berry flavours, very good length. Lovely stuff. A business lunch, restaurant Lute, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, NL.

2013 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

Chardonnay more

6/23/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 90 points

According to Samuel Billaud, 2013 was a vintage in which the fruit wasn't fully ripe even in the last week of September - and overripe a few days later. Not a very typical Chablis, but an interesting wine with considerable tension; noticeable oak, sweet pear fruit, crisp and juicy acidity, sea weed, good flavour intensity, lovely balance and length. Attractive, but drink young.

6/22/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 89 points

Essentially in the same crisp and linear style as the "normal" Soalheiro, this old vine cuvée displays more depth of flavour and intensity and a greater weight of fruit. Pear and peach, some grassy notes and a "sigh of the seething sea". Mineral, vibrant and fresh, as clean as a whistle, slightly short on the finish. Lovely stuff.

Medium deep, purple cherry red colour; confected and stewed fruit on the nose, sweet and spicy, good depth but completely lacks the definition, precision and transparency of a good Pinot Noir; the palate is sweet and sour, rather dull and dusty, fresh and juicy; slightly hot and raw finish. Not nice at all.

2013 Altocedro Tempranillo Ano Cero

La Consulta more

6/21/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 88 points

From mature Tempranillo vines (25 years old) in La Consulta, 30% aged for 8 to 10 months in American oak, 14% ABV. I do not find this very easily recognisable as a Tempranillo. There is ripe red berry fruit and a hint of rosehip, spicy minerality and smoky oak; seems highly strung with ripe but grippy tannins, forward but also quite structured in its way. Notes of liquorice and tar on the finish. Unlike the 2013 Altocedro Malbec tasted recently, this feels ill at ease with itself and a bit anonymous. Perhaps it needs more time? I am not yet convinced.
