2010 Château Simian Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Grandes Grenachieres d'Hippolyte

Red Rhone Blend more

1/10/2016 - Crunge Likes this wine: 92 points

Beautiful aromas of red fruit mixed with herbs and pepper. The palate was cleaner and more modern than the nose, with just a hint of earth to go with the cherries and raspberries. Enjoyable, but the finish was a bit sour, knocking the score down a point or two. 92-93, perhaps higher with more age.

Extremely light in the glass, already mostly brown. Sour flavors hid most of the fruit. If I'd had this in a blind tasting, I would have picked it as an extremely old, over-the-hill wine, 10+ years past its peak.

At first, there was an unpleasant aroma, but it blew off quickly. We started with a pop and pour and consumed over two hours. Once the unpleasant aroma was gone, the nose consisted of dark fruits, cocoa and licorice (a new one for me.) The flavors were dark fruits, with incredible depth. One odd thing about this wine is that when taking a drink, it seemed very modern. But, the aftertaste contained a lot of earth. Absolutely delicious and my fiancee and I both raved about it. I'd recommend an hour decant at this stage.

Hopefully this was an off bottle, but it wasn't corked. Musty aroma and the flavors of dark fruits were overpowered by a sour taste. The aftertaste was sour with a hint of vinegar. There was some fruit there, but I'm certainly not looking forward to my other bottle.

On a pop and pour, it was slightly bitter. With air, the bitterness faded to just a bite on the cherry and raspberry flavors of the fruit. My fiancee and I both really enjoyed this. If opening now, give it an hour or two in the decanter.

Nose of raisins. Flavors of raisins and stewed plums. Took a while to blow off the harshness, but even then, not a good wine. I never would have picked this as a CdP in a blind tasting.

Even better than my previous bottle. I shared with three friends and all four of us nursed our glasses, not wanting it to end. The aroma is full of fruit and earth and smells fantastic. The flavor is port-style sweetness and fruit and earth and... it just goes on and on. The flavor lingers for minutes. Truly special.

A big step down from my last bottle. This one was very muted fruit, with a hard, somewhat sour edge to it. Hopefully this was an off bottle because the one I had on 8/30/2015 was excellent (see note.)

A bit sour on a pop and pour, but that disappeared with a little air. Well made, just not enough going on to warrant a higher score. Blueberries and blackberries on the palate, with a medium body and finish. A decent if unremarkable wine.

This wine is a chameleon, with each glass being different. This is something I've never experienced, but the good news is that overall, it was a good wine. The first glass was a bit heavy, with dark fruits and some tobacco notes. The second glass, which I had with dinner, seemed muted and I didn't get much from it (I'm just assuming this doesn't have the backbone to stand up to the wasabi in the sushi I was eating.) The third glass, after dinner, was full of red fruit, mainly cherries, and had a touch of sweetness that was pleasant. Finally, the last glass was almost port-like, with a hint of raisin and black walnut. My fiancee tasted each glass and our notes were remarkably similar. She even said I could serve this and people would think each glass came from a different bottle.

On a pop and pour, both my fiancée and I found it to be a bit thick and muddled, with an almost tar-like flavor. We let the glasses sit for an hour and that made a huge difference. It turned into a wine dominated by red fruit with just a bit of a kick to it. Give it some more time in the bottle or decant.

My second bottle and better than the first. Cherry flavors dominate and plenty of the Pegau funk. A bit sweet but not bad. Smooth feel and low acidity. Paired with lamb and was an excellent match. Certainly no 2003, 2009, or 2010, but still an enjoyable and well-made wine.

Outstanding wine. Dark fruits and a bit of earth and cocoa on the nose. Dark purple and impenetrable in the glass. The first few drinks had tartness up front but red fruit, mainly cherries, on the finish (which is not something I've experienced with other bottles.) As the wine breathed and warmed up to room temperature, the dark fruits came through, with a nice note of pepper and spices. Quite acidic and tannic, but not in a bad way. An absolutely great example of Syrah with a bit of a rustic feel overall.

Very dark in the glass, and unlike many grenaches, this contains more dark fruits than red fruits. A modern style without any barnyard, it's still deep and bursting with blackberries and blueberries. Full flavor and low acidity make this an easy-drinker, but not in a bad way. Very nice and a good QPR.

Lighter than a normal grenache in the glass, but only a bit. Cherries and raspberries on the nose and palate. A bit of earth on the finish. Drank alone and then with pizza, and it was enjoyable both ways.

Consumed over two nights. Inky purple in the glass, with a nose of black fruits. Teeth-staining, full-bodied wine. Upon a PnP, there was a bit of a sour note, but that was gone within 30 minutes. Flavors of blackberry dominate, but this wine has good complexity and balance. Smooth tannins, alcohol in balance, great flavors. It lost nothing on the second day. While I miss the pepper that was so prevalent in the 2009, this is still a very enjoyable and well-made wine.

Very light in the glass for a grenache, with a brownish tint. The wine had some fruit but also had some harshness. Not a bad pizza wine, and its ~$15.00 price point is about right.

Removed from a wine cellar at 55 degrees F (12.8C) and let it warm slightly. The nose was full of red fruit and alcohol, while the flavor was dominated by cherries. Around 65F (18.3C) seems to be perfect. The wine is full-bodied and very smooth, with a bit of strength on the palate. On day two, it had the same red fruit flavors dominated by cherry, but had softened a bit. At the price, an excellent wine.

A year after my first bottle, I opened one tonight and was pleasantly surprised. This bottle was quite good. Gone were the cherry and bitter notes from the previous bottle. This bottle held notes of blackberries and blueberries, with a nice pepper kick behind it. Fragrant, full, and delicious, I am finally understanding the WA 95+ score.

6/21/2015 - Crunge Likes this wine: 93 points

This wine wasn't at all what I expected. My girlfriend commented on how mild it was, and I agree. As EpochMD said in a previous review, it's "deliciously flat." It didn't have that Aussie jammy quality I expected. Instead, it was very restrained and subtle. Delicious, to be sure, but nothing in your face about it. A perfect and delicious sipping wine, it's one that I won't pair with food, but will enjoy while I sit on the deck and read.

Encouraged by other reports of this wine, I decided to open another bottle a year after my first one (which I scored an 83, which was probably generous for that swill.) My first bottle of this was awful: vanilla nose, vanilla flavor, nothing else. This bottle was decent. Over oaked, for sure, but at least I could taste the wine. It still doesn't compare to the Caymus I've been enjoying for over 20 years, but at least this one was drinkable. A lot of vanilla, but also some sweetness on top of fruit. Okay wine, but a terrible QPR.

The first Torrin I've ever had, and hopefully not the last. On a PnP, the nose was unbelievably strong. Good, but strong. My gf took and sip and uttered, "Yum." Over the next 90 minutes we consumed this inky black monster. Light fails to penetrate it, but it bursts with dark fruits and hits like Mohammed Ali. A very strong wine with amazing flavors. Highly recommended for Syrah fans.

Not quite as good as other bottles I've had in the past, but still very nice. Dark purple in the glass, with aromas of red berries. No harshness and the alcohol was in balance, but a bit of sweetness (not in a bad way.) Plenty of raspberry and cherry and a nice finish.

Very enjoyable, even this young. Lacks the strong pepper that made the 2009 so unique, but more concentrated than the 2010. This dark, brooding wine shows dark berries, earth, cocoa, and stone. No hint of oak. Wonderful on the nose and palate, my gf and I both enjoyed immensely. Let it age another 1-2 years and enjoy over the next 5-10.
