NV Agustin Blazquez Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Fino Carta Blanca

Palomino Fino more

7/3/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Bottled in the '70s. I just had a brief taste at a party, but man, this was in incredible shape. Super fine and long, with laser precision across the palate and hardly any oxidative notes to speak of, beyond the advanced fino-ness, the fino amontillado quality. It is sedate, mellow, but so far from tired.

Serious concentration of sugars, such that you get those legs that never come down. Dense, oily, raisiny, coffee, more coffee than chocolate. Mellow and easy-going.

A very oxidized, raisiny style, similar on the nose to Jerez brandy, actually, with a lot of wood. Highly aromatic. Not as good as the Amontillado imo but solid and interesting.

Tastes like, and is really, more than 12 years, maybe close to 20. Bio for 3 years and oxidative for the rest, this is definitely a very oxidative, beefy amontillado, pungent and nutty.

Palomino Fino more

7/1/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

I really like this, it's pale for amontillado and cleary has a foot placed squarely in fino, and is not yet all that oxidized. Doesn't have much prune/fig notes yet, only a touch of walnut and mushroom, very "dry" profile over all, very yeast driven, salty and brisk and refreshing on the palate.

NV Alexander Jules Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Los Abandonados 6/8 Oloroso

Palomino Fino more

7/1/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Incredibly old, highly concentrated oloroso with intense acidity and lots of bitter herb/medicinal notes, old wood, tea, leather. Brinier than I expected for Oloroso, and very savory/umami. Huge wine, very serious and wildly complex.

Like the Manzanilla 17/71, this is from Argueso. Essentially a manzanilla pasada, having aged 5 years bio and 5 ox., this still has a lot of the dryness and briney/olivey qualities, and it's quite light and brisk. Not as deep or complex as the other wines from this firm, but a very pleasant wine, with touches of mushroom, toffee, orange peel, very linear and salty, and in that way kinda makes me think of Vina AB, which is also a non-fruity, not-so-aged Amontillado.

From the solera that provides Romate's Fino Perdidio, this bottling is from selected casks around the 8 year mark, and bottled en rama in May '13. A highly savory nose, pungent, broad, and mature. Briney, nutty, slightly peppery, with a warm/fresh bread quality. This has a lot of freshness on the palate.

NV Alexander Jules Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda 17/71

Palomino Fino more

7/1/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

The pungent saltiness and yeast and aldehyde of a Manzanilla that's basically bottled en rama, but it's mellow out in a way due to being in bottle for a couple years now. Apple, almond, hay, and a long steely finish. Fairly full-bodied and aged.

Honestly, this is deliciously balanced, with the PX offering its own vegetal raisiny goodness, and almost melding perfectly with, and boosting the natural richness of the oloroso base.

Quite an old, regal wine, round and rich without any sweetness, though touches of butter, but none of the bitter herbiness you get with many older wines (which I also love). Very plum, fig, chocolate, walnut, with lots of glycerol.

For such a young wine this is actually quite good. Simple, but round and fruity, with all the chocolate, walnut, caramel notes you could want but not too sticky. Very easy to drink. If this is the style you're going for, it's a nice wine.

NV Williams & Humbert Dry Sack Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Solera especial aged 15 years

With more than twice the age and more than twice the sugar of the regular Dry Sack, you can tell right away on the nose that this means business. A robust, dark/roasted sort of nose, woody and rich. Meant to compete with age-designated tawny port, I can see many a fan of those wines loving this.

NV Williams & Humbert Jerez-Xérès-Sherry As You Like It Amontillado

Palomino Fino more

6/30/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

This is distinctly impressive sherry, which I wouldn't necessarily have expected, given the "branded" aspect of it and that it's a "medium" sherry, but you can tell immediately there's some significant age behind this wine (I think it's actually around 30). Rich, dark, and toasty/roasty on the nose with caramel, vanilla, walnuts, and treacle, it's woody and structured with a dense core, relieved by a fresh, bitter orange and coffee complexity. It's hard not to like this.

Can't believe it took me so long to get around to trying this stuff...anyway, this is actually pretty good. Not that sweet at only 28g/L, this is round and fruity, nutty and mushroomy, while being very fresh and vibrant rather than sticky or clumsy. Not much depth, but a nice wine if this is the style you're looking for.
