Brought this to Agricola with the MIT Peer group, last wine of the evening after a Peter Michael Ma Belle Fille and a Pegau CdP. Decanted at the restaurant for about 45 minutes, drank over an hour. Would opt for longer decant on next bottle.

Deep purple color. Nose is classic Pritchard Hill, dark and red fruits. Palate was tart/sour dark fruits, blueberry, tart black cherry, currants, baking spices, olives, smoke, white pepper. Really rich mouthfeel and texture. Finish is layered and complex, goes for 30+ seconds.

This is in a good spot but will (IMO) improve with age. Its got all the richness to keep evolving. Balanced French oak, tannins are smooth and resolving, will get better although really great now. WIll hold for a bit

Brought 2 bottles of this to Agricola to share with the MIT Peer group. Drank after the Peter Michael Ma Belle Fille. I had decanted these ans re-bottled prior to going to the restaurant, they had about 90 minutes of air time before we drank them. Fair amount of sediment in this wine.

Medium brick red, some cloudiness fading color. Some bricking at the edges. Barnyard/brett when first opened that fades as it opens. Nose was red fruits, herbs, garrigue, floral, tree bark. As it opened we picked up some honey caramel in the bouquet. Palate of red fruits, dried cherry, savory meats, pepper, smoke. Classic Grenache driven CdP...

Still a rich and powerful wine, now getting all the secondary characteristics that make Rhones both rustic and complex. A healthy decant is a must with this wine to allow it to show. Its in a great spot right now, the crowd loved this one. WOTN for about half

Brought this to Agricola to open the evening with the MIT Peer group. From a magnum, chilled and opened at the restaurant

Medium gold, some cloudiness. Nose of citrus, oak, butterscotch, oak. Palate repeats with citrus, pineapple, lees, ripe peaches, caramel and butterscotch. oak is there but not overwhelming. Creamy mouthfeel with a medium long finish. Great secondary flavors in the finish, lingers for 20+ seconds.

I held a glass back abd drank later in the evening, after the reds...the aromas got much richer and complex as the wine opened and warmed in the glass. For next magnum I will give this a decant.

You have to like the style (I do), big, rich CA Chard but still elegant in how it presents. This magnum was still very fresh, this is in a good zone but seems like well stored bottles will still have a good arc in front of them.

Took this one to Blue Point Grill in Princeton for our Father's Day dinner...gave this a quick chill, popped and drank over 90 minutes with grilled fish, grilled octopus and calamari - an excellent pairing.

Color has evolved to a deeper, vibrant gold. Nose was minerals, crushed stone, apples, ocean air. Consistent with prior notes: "...citrus, lemon zest, guava, green apples, quince, lime - very nice on the mid palate."

Given that this is an 8 year old SB/Pouilly Fume that still tastes fresh and vibrant, its pretty impressive. Should hold here for a while. Last vintage before DD passed, sentimental favorite...

At Charlotte's goodbye party for Sofia. This was purchased direct from the vineyard, stored in my cellar since. Splash decanted, drank over 90 minutes. Drank after an Alex Gambal Burgundy - so big step in concentration and mouthfeel for our guests.

Dark red/purple color, still holding, no real bricking. Nose was Rutherford dust, earth, dark fruits. Front of the palate was dark fruits, graphite/pencil, plums, blackberry, cinnamon/baking spices.

Classic "Rutherford Bench" profile, this bottle has moved right into its prime drinking zone. My guess is this would do better with a longer decant, we had a good experience nonetheless

Garnet/purple color. Nose was earthy/barnyard at the open. Fruit came through as the wine opened. Dark fruits, currants, herbs. Medium to light mouthfeel, tannins resolved. Medium finish, elegant.

In a good spot, drinking well now. Unlikely to improve much, will drink over next 3-5 years

First bottle from a batch purchased from Garagiste. Nose was closed at first, warmed up in the glass. On the palate, citrus, pineapple. Oak in the background but muted.

Nice enough but nothing special, was expecting a bit more - not for the price but for the reputation of the label. Won't imporve much. Drink over next 3 years

Consistent with prior notes -"Citrus, lemon, White flowers, crisp acidity. Mid palate had a tart lime-like flavor. Creamy finish, nice level of acidity"

Still going strong, served this chilled at abut 55 - releases more nuance as it warms in the glass

Nice garnet/red color. Bordeaux-Blend of Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc, providing a softer but still fruit forward profile. Red fruits, currants, plums, savory notes, herbs. Oak is well integrated.

Drinks well now, medium bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Not sure it improves much from here. In a good spot, would drink over next 3 years

In OC, last two bottles. These "rock block" wines from Lede are always fun to drink and well made. Drank one with Bryan, the second with Butch and Ralph. Opened for about 30 minutes, drank each over about 45 minutes. Second bottle was with steak - which is the "natural habitat" for this wine - perfect with steak.

Dark purple/red color. Beautiful nose right out of the glass. Red and dark fruits, vanilla oak. Palate is smooth, classic California Cab. Primary wine, oak and tannins are well integrated. Black fruit, vanilla, lavender/violet

Ready to drink now, best guess is it holds at this level for about 5 years.

Deep purple/velvet color. Nose of dark fruits, herbs. Black and blue fruits, "blueberry milkshake", tart blackberry, oak, vanilla. Still very young and primary, acidity was pretty strong suggesting a good backbone for aging.

1985 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve

At Union Square Cafe, from their list, they bought in a batch from a collector. Somm steered us to this, unique find on an always great list. My guests were European, good chance to try an aged Calif wine with palates skewed to Bordeaux. Purchased from a collector, well kept. Decanted for 30 minutes, drank over an hour.

Perfect garnet/purple red color, only mild signs of aging. Elegant nose of black fruits, dark cherry, earth cedar and tobacco. Palate was fruit forward but restained, repeating flavors from the nose, adding blueberry, plums, and baking spice. Tannins sweet and resolved. Long finish - lingers for 30+ seconds.

No expectations going in, the oldest Beringer I have had the opportunity to taste. The Reserve is an incredibly consistent wine, this one proving out the quality of this wine - better in most cases than the single vineyard offerings. Lucky to have a well kept bottle, excellent (almost perfect) example of an aged Calif.

PS ABV on the bottle was at 13.2%, my guess is this was closer to 12%. Would be good for Napa/Ca to get back to those levels for the longevity of the wine

Post the UVA tasting, we opened two of these to get the second group started. Popped and poured both bottles, drank over 45 minutes.

Medium/light ruby color, mild cloudiness. Bright red fruits, floral and earth notes on the nose. Palate was black cherry, herbs. Not overly new-worrld pinot - medium mouthfeel, silky. Slightly hot on the finish with some sweetness.

All in very nice, there is a chance this will put on some weight with a few more years in the cellar. Would give it an hour decant if you drink now (we did not), wine was performing much better towards the end.

Drank this on its own, I think this is better with a longer decant and with the right food. This bottle was good - although not as good as I remember the last bottle.

Rhone blend of 45% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah, 4% Counoise, the Mouvedre driven profile gives this more floral notes on the nose. also getting citrus/orange peel on the nose

Medium ruby color. Palate of black/blue fruits, baking spices, black pepper, tobacco leaf. Very CdP like - the objective, clearly. Medium finish, layered and complex. Wine is in a really good spot right now, will hold at this level for a while, IMO

Still primary, tight and somewhat tannic - but really special stuff. Time will benefit this wine. A great vintage and great winemaker (Thomas Rivers Brown), this will be very good in a few years.
