Classy. Great flavour. It’s filled out now. Excellent drinking.

Top class, cool climate Chardonnay. Getting up there with Grand Cru burgundy.

There is some refreshing fruit in here but currently it’s a strong, textual, youthful reserva.

2011 Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/14/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 92 points

Good colour with a wee hint of browning at the very rim.

I guess I wasn’t in the mood for it last time. This is fresh, sort of modern, but it’s a claret drinker’s vintage and this has very attractive (depending on your mood!) green tobacco notes.

Further development over the next 3-5 years is probably going to be very worthwhile, a lot of return for short-term cellaring.

2010 Tim Adams Shiraz The Aberfeldy

Clare Valley more

4/14/2024 - ProfByron wrote: 90 points

There is a prettiness about this, clear fruit, even ever so slightly floral, and clean winemaking with a touch of oak sweetness.

It’s a pity that the alcohol isn’t lower, it upsets the balance.

14.5% (or more), screwcap.

4/13/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 92 points

Very healthy bright colour.

Smells like a tin of smoked oysters, not unpleasant. Tastes gamey but a core of good Shiraz fruit. Soft, peak maturity.

Again I have to remark how impressive this is given the drizzling grey Summer of 2011 in France. As in Bordeaux and the Loire, rabbits were pulled out of hats by some producers.

Drink now.

Quite golden. Serious, not exactly savoury but close to it. I wasn’t expecting this level of austerity, given the vintage and the prestige blend.

Traditional cork.

2008 Château Dauzac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/11/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 91 points

I was just about to write that while this is good I suspect it won’t blossom but rather become increasingly savoury and dour but then I noticed my tasting not from 2 years ago. OK it does seem to be blossoming.

When will be peak drinking? I’d still hedge my bets and keep checking over the next few years.

But for now… yes it’s pretty classy. But match carefully to mood, food, and get the temperature right.

Fresh, varietal. Nice but you’d like to think that the New World can make wines of this standard and style at lower prices. Or maybe I’m wrong, must do a comparison tasting.

Crumbly cork.

Surprisingly dark colour.

1st night added acid was a bit too prominent. 2nd night, lovely mature Shiraz not particularly complex but in no way showing its 32 years! Extraordinary.

Surprisingly dark.

Somewhat muted nose.

Sweet vintage port like! Very much so. Right down to the touch of raisins. Interesting but be warned!

Cork, 13.5% claim which is obviously wrong, Yalumba have terrible record of alcohol claims.

2011 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Margaret River more

4/3/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 93 points

Hmm, interesting, more developed than expected. Ever so slight brick red to brown edge gives it away. And then slightly stewed fruit on the nose but in no way prune like.

I’d so guess this was Bordeaux under cork not Margaret River under screwcap. 13.5% alcohol may be part of the equation.

It’s rather fine, complex.

2011 the drought continued in WA (whereas rain made a sad vintage for South Australia). I’m thinking this is less about vintage and more about the winemakers wanting to pull back from over opulence.

Such a lot of nice flavour and only 12.7% this is certainly no lean mean Chardonnay. Quality fruit driven, oak in check.

Bright gold colour, suggests fair bit of skin contact during wine making, and it tastes it.

Drink now. Not for further cellaring but then again it will certainly survive a few more years.

Screwcap.

2007 Château du Tertre

Next to the 2008 this is noticeably more syrupy. Quite a surprise. Alongside some classic aged character. Green tobacco and cigar box mixed.

Tannins are more obvious, less rounded than the 2008.

Altogether a more exciting wine, though it I expect it will be under-appreciated by most.

Nice nose. Quite classic.

Dark, savoury fruits. It has warmth and softness but the black bible leather flavour makes this a bit stern. Needs food.

Good wine. More like St Estephe (at least in the old days) than Margaux.

2017 Stella Bella Cabernet Merlot

Margaret River Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/27/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 91 points

Such a pretty floral Cab/Merlot. Fine flavours, a bit young for me but I think this will mature reasonably quickly by Margaret River (or Bordeaux) standards. And will hopefully retain its class.

Certainly better than most Cru Bourgeois medocs.

Tannins are fine but not plentiful. Acid is bright and bouncy, too much so at present, but they calm down with breathing.

On the 2nd night it’s considerably more savoury.
