Accessed with Coravin. Medium-light garnet color with initial signs of bricking. Flabby nose of tomatoes and blackberries, with nary a wisp of tertiary aromas. On the palate this is also quite primary, with stone fruit flavors easing into a smooth, barely acidic finish. This wine tastes a bit like it is falling apart; perhaps the oddness of the vintage is to blame? In any case, this may have been an easy drinker in its youth but, based on this example, it is unlikely to inspire the type of decades-long fascination that makes Burgundy so enthralling.

Medium-light crimson color. This was underwhelming at first, with the nose seeming light and airy, and the palate coming across as thin and astringent. An hour or two after being opened, the nose had expanded to encompass a rich floral perfume with distinct notes of lavender. The palate also bloomed, with red fruit flavors being accented by a lick of licorice, though not much in the way of distinct terroir. The acidity on this was very firm, leaving the finish somewhat unbalanced. Overall, a nice village wine drinking well enough now.

Cloudy garnet color. Dazzling nose with smoky and flinty aromas, combined with the classic CVNE note of orange peel. The palate is similarly nuanced and multilayered, with the addition of spicy herbal flavors and dusty red fruit. With a bit of tannin remaining, I was surprised to find this lively and well-supported at age 30. Tasted against the 2001 Gran Reserva, this humble Cosecha outshone its noble sibling. Drink now, if you've any around.

Cloudy crimson color. With a bit of aeration, this developed an earthy and brambly nose. The palate had a good balance of red berries, an echo of the earthy nose, and additional stony notes. This has a mild but lingering acidity on the finish. Wonderful mature Burgundy, with all the elements in balance. I continue to be impressed with how well the 1990's are showing right now.

Opaque crimson color. Meaty Shiraz nose of roasted beef, accented by darker aromas of shoe polish, damp peat moss, and charcoal. The palate has an entry that is broad, fruity and smooth, with a slightly oily midpalate. This perks up on the back of the tongue, finishing with the flavor of tart blackberries accented by a spicy tannic bite and a final hint of fresh mint leaves. Mature, though still lively, this is drinking well now and should continue to do so for another three years. My first St. Henri; the good Lord willing, it won't be my last.

Medium garnet color. On both the nose and the palate, this combined an exotic spicyness with pure, bright red fruit, fine minerality, and pert acidity. This stood up to a variety of richer dishes (schnitzel, ox cheek), showing great versatility. Beatiful wine with a few years ahead of it.

Medium-light garnet color. In comparison to the somewhat expressive 2011 Carignan from this producer, this wine was rather weak. Light, airy nose of red fruit and a hint of wood. This is a featherweight on the palate, being rather watery and without much discernible flavor or texture. I'd avoid having this again.

Opaque rosewood color. This had a gamy nose of beef blood accented by ample peppercorn and dried herbal aromas, as well as ripe black fruit. Juicy and full-bodied, this was very smooth on the palate, with little remaining in the way of tannic support. Not built for the ages, but a pleasing and food-friendly wine.

Golden brown color. This has the characteristic mature Riesling nose of petrol, as well as the richer honey and apricot flavors associated with aged Sauternes. Viscous and mouth-coating, this is a standalone dessert requiring no accompaniment. Optimally mature, this should be enjoyed now.

Crimon color. Spicy nose with rich underlying fruit and a serious, pronounced minerality. This was echoed on the palate, which was supported by fine acidity and deftly walked the line bewteen elegance and opulence. Similar to one of the more flamboyant Vosne-Romanée crus, this wine is an excellent example of the heights to which conscientiously-made New World PN can ascend.

From 375 ml. Opaque, slightly cloudy crimson color. Intense nose of huckleberry, accented by an odd, persistent aroma of vanilla and latex. This was also evident on the palate, which otherwise was quite tart and tannic despite more than an hour of decanting. Had this at a restaurant, so storage conditions may have been to blame? Would be interested to know if others had this same issue.

From 375 ml, popped and poured. Opaque rosewood color. Nose and palate are both jam-packed with ripe black fruit, like perfectly juicy blackberries. A prior reviewer described this as "fleshy" and I am unable to find a better descriptor. Though the nose is quite full throttle with a distinctly hot whiff of acetone, this wine is starting to develop some interesting tertiary aromas of shoe polish, red clay and tree bark. This finishes extremely dry, with firmly clenched tannins. This wine shows promise but is nowhere near ready to drink, I'd happily let this mature another five years at the minimum, with an eye towards drinking this in the 2020-2030 range. Very good value at the roughly $30/bottle Cellartracker valuation.

1996 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

Mature medium-gold color. Slightly oxidative nose of butterscotch, almond and browned butter, with the faint aroma of honeydew melon. Any concerns about premox (given the susceptibility of wines in this vintage) were quickly assuaged with the first sip. The palate is, as Remington Norman put it, "rich and round without any trace of heaviness." Ripe citrus fruit and the subtle flavor of Mezcal transition into still fresh acidity and a lingering stony finish. Excellent Meursault from the largest owner of this Premier Cru, this wine had every delightful characteristic commonly associated with mature white Burgundy. Drink up!

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Gold color. Tangy, somewhat green nose. This had an ample palate of rich, unctuous honey. However, it finished with an off-putting residual bitterness. This may recede with time, but I'd be hesitant to revisit this again in the near future.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Crimson-violet color. Light, clean and persistent on both the nose and the palate. Bright, tart red fruit aromas with a slightly musty sous bois (maleza? suelo del bosque?) scent. This had the same bright elegance and long, fine tannic finish of the 2009, which I preferred. Still, charming wine with a long future ahead of it. Would gladly taste these head-to-head over the next 15+ years.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Crimson color. Massively meaty nose with ripe tomato and baking spice aromas. This has a palate that incorporates a densely floral, perfumed flavor, finishing with smooth and well-integrated but supportive tannins. Surprising and superb, this is the equal of the similarly intriguing 2004 and better than the more reticent 2002. I would gratefully enjoy this for the next decade, given the chance.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Rosewood color. Expressive nose with vegetal and musty aromas. Maple and cigarette butts. The palate is lean and elegant but incorporates some of the bold exoticism of the nose. This showed far better than the very sedate 2007, and should continue to evolve through the end of the decade.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Violet color with a light rim. Ample oak and sweet vanilla on the toasty nose. Very forward and somewhat internationally-styled, surprising given the other wines in the family. The vintner expressed the intention to use oak judiciously in order to create a less rustic wine than is customary for this Denominación de Origen. While that philosophy was evident with the graceful 2008, the subsequent vintage seems to have gone in the other direction.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Crimson color. Exotic nose of fresh cut aloe. Dry, stony palate with lingering notes of Asian spices. Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Crimson color. Stunning nose of anise, spicy fruit, charcoal. Gorgeous palate with pure, gentle fruit flavors accented by a somewhat hot finish. Eye-opening wine for the complexity of aromas and flavors, and the purity and elegance of the palate. Obviously superior to the 2002 and equal to the excellent 2003. Will likely remain lively for a decade or more.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Medium-dark carmine color. Sweetly spicy nose of cola, with a somewhat sappy quality. This has an elegant palate of light, bright red fruit in the grip of long, super-structured tannins. Delightful now but I'd be happy to lay this down for the long haul. Better than the 2008.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Pure crimson color, starting to show a little bit of maturity. This had a nose with a sweet and woodsy note reminiscent of maple syrup. Surprisingly, the palate was very subdued by comparison. Several fellow tasters wondered aloud whether this might have entered a dumb period, given the immediate and expressive character of the 2009. Would revisit this without prejudice in a few years.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Rosewood color with violet rim. Multilayered nose of beef blood, seasoning salt and mint. The palate on this is more linear and restrained than the expansive 2010, making the wine less immediately accessible. However, the strong tannic support combined with the intriguing density of the nose makes me believe this will be a future standout.

Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Rosewood color with violet rim. The nose started out restrained, though this expanded as the wine became emboldened with aeration. This was made in a more elegant style than is common for this region, with red berry flavors and a subtle spiciness transitioning into a long, tightly tannic finish. The oak on this was far more understated than on the 2009 Pintia, which was more forward and overt. I prefer the 2008, though I'd allow at least five more years in the cellar for this to bloom.
