2006 Amphorae Maharal Merlot-Barbera

Israel Merlot Blend, Merlot more

2/15/2013 - Jan Schultink wrote: 88 points

A bit of a disappointment. A merlot and barbera blend. Attractive new car smell nose. Still tight after letting it breathe for more than an hour, with muted red fruit on an acidic background. Hopefully his wine will open later. Not worth the $70 at the moment.

After the wine maker change in 2006, I pretty much stopped following this winery. What a nice surprise to come back 7 years later. Still young young, super fresh potent cassis, black cherry opening, lingering on pinching pine tree background leading to a long yeasty cigar box finish with mouth drying and cleansing acidity. A big sweet alcohol punch (the label says 15%, but it could be more) kicks in later. I am curious to see how this still raw wine in a big bold new world style develops over time, and hopefully will settle down elegantly.

Black/red in color. Nice new car smell nose. Composed, elegant opening of dark chewy red fruit on a subtle oaky background, leading to along minty, cedar, espresso finish. The wine gets better when given time to breathe.

Green golden in color. Flinty nose followed by a refreshing citrus opening mellowed by green melon. Nice chalky backbone leading to a medium long yeasty finish. A great white Burgundy but not one that really surprises or excites me.

Dark brown red in color. Flat nose. Black cherry and cassis with some gravel on the opening, followed by lots of acidity and some eucalyptus on the finnish. A nice wine to pair with food, but if tasted blind, I would have mistaken it for an every day Chianti rather than a Brunello. The storage conditions in the shop in north Iceland might not have contributed to the quality of the wine.

A beautiful Syrah in the making. Bright purple red in color. Fresh glazed fruit nose. Still muted but already powerful cassis and black cherry on the opening backed up by a pleasant raw, flint, pine, dusty, earthy sensation (bitter in nice way). This one needs to open up more to show its full potential.

2011 Saslove Lavan

Galilee White Blend more

5/13/2012 - Jan Schultink wrote: 88 points

A fresh blend of gewürztraminer, viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is now labelled as "dry", previous vintages were semi dry. Still, there is some of that sweetness left. No oak, bit rich traces of melon, peach, liche, pear makes this an incredibly fun pool wine to be consumed in generous quantities beside the pool this summer. Like the Pelter unpacked Chardoanny with more bass and treble, and a bit les sophistication.

2010 Saslove Marriage

Galilee Red Blend more

5/13/2012 - Jan Schultink wrote: 86 points

The first kosher vintage of this Saslove entry level wine. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabermet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Nebolio, this wine truly is a "marriage" of varieties. Bright red in color, with a fresh vanilla, caramel, red cherry, plum on first attack. Slightly tangy, leathery, acidic follow on.Leading to a medium long finish with hints of mocca, mint, and bread flaring up. Not as good as a Flam Classico priced the same in Israel. And lacking that rustic country, simple style feel that can stil make these type of wines fun to drink. Maybe it will get a bit better with time.

2010 Saslove Shiraz Aviv

Galilee more

4/29/2012 - Jan Schultink wrote: 87 points

Two novelties for Saslove. One: a Shiraz in the Aviv series. Two: the first vintage that the winery produces kosher wines. The wine is still hazy. Opening with a sharp, leathery nose. On attack black cherry, but then followed by sensations that are very in-Shiraz: tea, lather, marshmallow, nutty maron glace, leading to a mouth drying finish with mint and herbs. This wine has not settled down yet. pleasant now, but let's see how it develops.

2010 Clos de Gat Chanson

4/9/2012 - Jan Schultink wrote: 88 points

A crowd pleaser. Dark purple in color. Fresh, red forest fruit, sandy tannins, and a very big sweetish alcohol punch (14.5% but I suspect higher) lingering with some burn. Usually, wine makers kill these wines with a load of oak, but wood is absent here. Overall, a very pleasant wine as an aperitif or to sweeten up a country-style, simple, meat dish.

2011 Tulip Winery White Tulip

Upper Galilee White Blend more

3/22/2012 - Jan Schultink wrote: 88 points

After some pretty disappointing reds of Tulip this week, this one is a nice surprise. Still young with a nice hazy platinum green color. Fresh citrus on the nose. Grass, citrus, melon: a summery and refreshing mix of 70% gewurztraminer and 30% sauvignon blanc, a nice acidity backbone and a cleansing finish with a flare up of blossom. Nothing pretentious but enjoyable, a great wine to drink in moderate to large quantities at the pool side this summer with a moderate alcohol level of 12%

12/23/2011 - Jan Schultink wrote: 86 points

This wine was pleasant, but there is not much more to say. The typical Chassange ingredients are there: minerals, citrus, but the whole wine feels out of balance, the oak/vanilla is a bit overpowering, and it might already shows signs of oxidation. Not recommended.

12/23/2011 - Jan Schultink wrote: 91 points

St. Aubin is a well-kept wine secret. Bordering famous Burgundy vineyards with Montrachet in their name, it is often over-looked. This Lamy is wonderful. Sparkling yellow/green in color. A refreshing citrus nose. A complex attack of peach, citron, melon on a foundation of spicy caramel, minerally gravel, on a refreshing acidic backbone leading to long and lingering finish with a flare up of fresh wild flower honey. The wine is still young and I hope it will age well. Delicious.
