2012 Domaine Romain Collet Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

Chardonnay more

Limpid color. Lemony, brothy nose. Not quite as large scaled as the Montee de Tonnerre, but finer and more precise with rising back end acidity and minerality, and real Chablis oyster shell quality. A truly excellent Clos if not at the absolute peak of what this vineyard can produce.

Light yellow. Much more pear fruit here. Bigger and creamier than the Vaillons, but the back end shows excellent acidity and stone.

Medium ruby center with maturing rim. Multidimensional Burgundian aromatics with an alluring mixture of cooler green elements, dark red fruit, stemminess, and a little woodsmoke. Medium to full bodied for Pinot with a miraculous combination of meatiness yet no sense of being ponderous. Perfectly ripe without any undue sweetness. More blue than red fruit, pomegranate, superb acidity, some residual tannin, excellent soil driven finish. Two years ago I said "better in 5+ years"; while that is undoubtedly true, I could not follow my own advice and hold off until 2018. No matter-it was also better in 2+ years! This is a dream Nuits that is progressing beautifully and will easily last another decade.

Light greenish yellow. Salt spray nose. Middle weight with some of the perceptible fat of the vintage, but still a tart, underripe lemony, brothy mix which is just fine for AC Chablis and certainly worked well with shellfish tonight. A simple pleasure, ready to go.

Sunday Alsace Flight (SF Wine Trading Company): After a taste from one bottle revealed a bizarre vein of spearmint that killed the rest of the wine, a second bottle showed this wine's qualities. Full yellow. Rich tropical fruit more than honey on the nose. Moderate sweetness and length, good acidity. Simple and relatively short on the acid/sugar tension front, this is still a good dessert wine which has held up pretty well.

Sunday Alsace Flight (SF Wine Trading Company): Medium yellow. Classic varietal lychee/citrus aromas. Medium weight, a bit oily. Off dry fruit followed by drier, soil filled finish with some lingering bitterness. Clipped and the balance isn't perfect.

Sunday Alsace Flight (SF Wine Trading Company): Medium yellow. Ripe citrus and stone fruit nose with a trace of floral notes. Medium weight, just off dry, bitter citrus and much more high toned florality in the mouth than on the nose. The latter aspect is so prominent that I think I would have guessed Muscat had I tasted this blind.

Sunday Alsace Flight (SF Wine Trading Company): Medium yellow. Mostly floral tones. Light to medium weight, totally dry. Curiously empty mid-palate (where the fruit is supposed to be!) followed by powerful back end acidity and minerality. Not worth even the modest price. I see I detected some fruit when I tasted this earlier this year, but it was nowhere to be found in this bottle.

Sunday Alsace Flight (SF Wine Trading Company): Light yellow. Slightly aromatic, strong smell of freshly cut apple. Medium weight, some glycerine. Very clean apple fruit, ginger, and soil. Moderate length. This is a very good example of this varietal, which to me often tastes neutral and bland.

Light core, faded edge. High toned and floral. Gentle, supple feel, some VA, and a tarry, bitter finish. For the life of me, I could not find any fruit. I do not like the balance or the finish. Well off the level of other 2010 Brunellos I've tried.

1989 Domaine Bourillon Dorléans Vouvray Moelleux Tris de Nobles Grains 'La Coulée d'Or'

Chenin Blanc more

7/23/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Light golden. Secondary aromatics of apricot, orange blossom, and very little honey. Beautiful feel, not terribly sweet, some almond suggesting early signs of oxidation, adequate acidity to carry it to this point. Fully mature, discrete, fine but not overwhelming dessert Chenin Blanc. I always think of 1989 as a classic botrytis vintage, but this really was not of that style. If you own it, time to drink.

Hard to believe, but after a night recorked in the fridge, better the next day. Purer, more lively in the mouth, more unctuous and no trace of oxidation whatsoever. I underestimated this based on the first few glasses.

Chenin Blanc more

Bright tulip color. Classic quince aromas with a whiff of honey. Very, very tight and dry before it began to unfold with 30 minutes of air. Medium weight, and as I've noted before, a texture that is a like a synthesis of Vouvray and Savennieres or Saumur (which is to say more earthy than Chenin Blanc from the east of Tours). Slightly glossy entry of pear joined by sharp citrus (grapefruit?), and then a headspinning finish of acidity and minerality. This shows NO residual sugar. This particular bottle was probably the freshest and most vigorous of some 8 or 9 tasted over the years. I dunno-people keep finding oxidized bottles of 2002 Huet, and I keep drinking and enjoying them. I can only hope that my luck doesn't run out.

Light to medium yellow. Orange/lemon drop nose and fruit on the palate. Noteworthy vibrancy of this fruit. Light weight with a touch of lactic creaminess, and then a deep dive into the acidic, saline, granitic depths to finish-one of those wines that makes you shake your head and wonder how it ever started out as grape juice. This definitely has an extra layer of power and complexity that separates it from most other Muscadet. Each bottle has been at this very high level, and the wine has shown amazing consistency when tasted over the past 2+ years.

Great Whites in the Steamy Pacific Northwest; 7/17/2015-7/18/2015 (Seattle): Medium yellow. Rich orange scents. Full, layered feel with strong vanillin. Fresh and quite lush with average acidity. Only at the very end do more Chablisien salty notes come through and not very convicingly at that. If you billed it as a Corton Charlemagne, I'd be happy, but as a Chablis, much less so.
