1993 Dominique Laurent Clos de la Roche

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Tan label (so probably not a Vieilles Vignes bottling, but who knows with Laurent). Slightly cloudy light red without much fading. Menthol and strawberry fruit. Medium weight. A soft, resolved feel is only disrupted by some ending acidity. Savory blend of soil and red fruit with the tannins largely resolved. An excellent, completely mature wine that falls well short of Grand Cru depth and distinction.

Still remarkably pale and primary appearing. Primary smelling too-saline and underripe lemon joined by white flowers as it warms. Lean, sharply focused, and crystalline. Only begrudgingly does it yield some lemon cream and texture, and that after being open for a good 2 hours. Thrilling in how long it has taken to unfold and its great potential over the next decade. This is the essence of the vintage rather than Raveneau's style.

Late 2011 disgorgement. Yellow, mild mousse. Wonderful ginger and citrus aromatics. Medium weight but deeply flavored with tremendous acidity and fine stoniness. This held up and evolved beautifully over 3 hours and more than stood up to a wide array of dishes.

Light yellow with a glint of green. Briny nose. Light but picks up glycerine with air. Bone dry. Bitter citrus followed by a rush of stoniness and soil. Three years ago, I said it would last for ages, and this bottle did nothing to change my projected time frame. This is incredibly young and mouthwatering. I imagine that some would find it too austere. Another amazing Muscadet value.

Light ruby. Riper fruit nose here. Black cherry fruit on the round attack, but then foreshortened by astringent wood and a harsh finish. I'd pass on this one too and stick to the basic Teroldego that is less dressed up.

The basic Teroldego bottling and my favorite compared to the higher end wines. Deep ruby almost opaque-great looking. Medium body. Very pure blackberry fruit with a light dusting of herbs. Not terribly tannic. Well balanced for current enjoyment.

Same color as the 2013 Manzoni. Less forthcoming nose. Also medium weight but less texture. Less fruit here and more clay. This struck me as somewhat neutral.

Out of magnum. Absolutely even deep ruby. Fantastic, harmonious texture. Medium to full bodied. Downplayed Cabernet varietal elements compared to the 2011. Long, poised, roundly tannic. Very well positioned for a long, graceful run.

Light red, not perfect clarity. Light cherry and soil-more fragrant as it opens. Lighter body but picked up some weight with air. Dusty red fruit, herbs, and strong earth tones. Average acidity, adequate ripeness without any sweetness, modest drying tannins to resolve. Good quality, real Cote de Beaune profile, and I like the way it lingers in the mouth leaving a layer of terroir behind. To drink or hold for a few more years.

Light ruby/garnet color. Plum, cherry, and light garrigue. Medium weight (light for Chateauneuf), supple sweet red fruit that shouts Grenache, completely open, easy style with a bit of tobacco leaf and an interesting truffled component as well. One could quibble and ask for more acidity and tannin, but this is a damn good basic cuvee which is currently saying "Come hither".

Even garnet throughout. Some mustiness blew off; afterwards, gentle aromas of faded strawberry and herb. Light weight. Light red fruit, a twist of blood orange (as in some red Burgundy), and balsam wood. Gradually fading finish. Prototypical Lopez de Heredia subtlety and class, but this is missing the uncanny fruit that the greatest examples can seduce with even at this stage. A great pleasure but not as life altering as some other vintages (e.g., 1981) have been.

Medium yellow. Underripe pineapple and saline notes. Medium bodied. Very flavorful ripe fruit balanced by decent acidity and brothiness. Far better than the last few bottles I've had of this, and also distinctly less advanced than the 2006 Clos poured for us in Chablis last month. Nonetheless, for drinking over the near term. A nice surprise in terms of the quality.
