2014 Liquid Farm Mourvedre Rosé Vogelzang

Tasty Rose. Ripe strawberries and sufficient acidity. Won't change your life but is well balanced enough and gets the job done. Not a lot of depth or minerality, but it's plenty tasty.

I gave this one more air than my last bottle and it was so much rounder and more expressive. Still the bright acids, featherlight frame, and red berries -- but this one was a bit deeper, a bit more intense, and juicier. More Mourvedre too. Lovely wine and totally unique.

Totally delicious BdB and an excellent bargain. Well balanced, precise and mineral -- with just enough opulent fruit to round the wine out. A good substitute for Dom Ruinart, for example.

Tasty and very refreshing. Steely grapefruit, bright acidity, and sneaky minerals. Fairly linear but opens up with air. Don't serve too cold. Unique and tasty.

Super fresh and bright, this shows intense lime citrus, some sharp minerality, and a bit of salinity. Not a lot of depth or complexity at this point, and the nose is a bit muted, but the focus and intensity is really attractive. Just the faintest hint of more savory nuttiness which will emerge in time. Super young now.

Purchased from a restaurant by the glass to get a data point on 2010 Barolo. This is good wine that punches above its pricepoint. Although the wine is pleasurable now, make no mistake this is young Barolo with serious tannins and acids. But underneath the tannins you find lovely floral notes and dark brooding fruit. Hold.

Nice wine. The bold fruit is a bit jammy but this has the acidity to keep everything in check. This will last but it's in a nice place now.

Nice wine. Lovely citrus nose with floral hints introduces a palate that is like a lemon creamsickle. Citrusy sweet fruit framed by a whiff of oak. This is is bright (due to the acids) and bold (due to the fruit) and is reminiscent of a good village Puligny. Only nits are that this could use a bit more depth, complexity, and concentration -- it is a bit linear, and doesn't have quite the intensity of a Rhys Alpine, for example -- and I'd love to see even more minerality. Still, very satisfying and some of the best Chard I've had from California.

Very interesting wine, and one I hesitate to rate before trying another bottle. Clearly D&R is going all-out for subtlety and elegance here -- and that is such a laudable endeavor that I would support this venture almost irrespective of how the wine tastes. Luckily, the wine is nice and almost too easy to drink. Super seamless and smooth (to use a term I basically never use) -- and balanced and bright enough to be gulpable. Almost like a bizarro version of Lapierre Morgon. In fact, blind I probably would have guessed Cru Beaujolais. The problem is that the fruit intensity here is lacking. The wine expands up with air and develops a nice, airy, open knit texture where the fruit opens up. But you still have to look for it, and I think this would really benefit from additional concentration, which the top cru Beaujolais have (think Foillard) but this does not. These criticisms aside, I'm very pleased to have this in the cellar and I'm a buyer in future years. I just hope that with future vintages the D&R folks emphasize concentration a bit more, as I don't think they'd have to sacrifice any of the characteristic elegance.

2012 Sandlands Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands

more

11/24/2014 - qryan Likes this wine: 91 points

My first red from Sandlands, and this is highly compelling. Much more so than the Chenin. This is seriously structured and obviously young, but the fruit is ripe and the tannins fine-grained enough that this can be enjoyed now. This is on the juicier side of the spectrum -- not a lot of Northern Rhone style complexity -- but the fruit is pure and is an attractive mix of deep dark fruits, brighter notes, and minerals. This got better with air and the balance is nice. A winner that will improve. If you drink now, decant and give it air.

I liked this but didn't love it. Lovely nose and really nice waxy texture with an attractive mineral backbone. This is pretty broad shouldered. There is some acidity but it could use a little more, and there is slight marzipan note that perhaps comes form the lees contact. The oak is notable and detracts from the finished product. Nice wine and worth the money but I imagine it can get better with future vintages.

I really liked this. The bright, jagged acidity has softened a bit and the red, brambly fruit is framed by earthy, meaty tones and fine spices. Superbly balanced and almost gulpable. This is *just* entering its adolescence and has a ways to go, but was really lovely with roast chicken and duck now.
