2013 Littorai Pinot Noir The Haven

Sonoma Coast more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 95 points

Tasting at Littorai: Last of the 2013 vineyard designates poured, and my favorite of the group. Gorgeous nose that shows great purity, complexity, and layering with both brighter and darker red fruits, a bevvy of spices, and hint of something akin to orange peel/citrus that gives additional lift and energy to the aromatics. In the mouth, silky, vibrant, balanced, seamless, lingering, and delicious with the red fruit and spice notes repeating. A thrilling, memorable, special, complete wine. Highly recommended.

Red

2013 Littorai Pinot Noir Mays Canyon

Russian River Valley more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 93 points

Tasting at Littorai: The third 2013 vineyard designate tasted. Not as fruit forward/driven or showy as Platt, not as wound up or shut down as The Pivot. Offers up a profile of dark red fruits and barrel spices. Silky, fine grained, vibrant, and nicely balanced with the wine's structure and stuffing protruding just a bit on the back end. Great potential.

Red

2013 Littorai Pinot Noir The Pivot Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 91 points

Tasting at Littorai: Second of the vineyard designates tasted. Comparatively, I found this to be the most restrained, backward, and in need of additional bottle/cellar time to show its fullest potential. Just a bit darker and cooler in its fruit complexion than the Platt, along with a more savory (pepper, spice, herbal) quality. Medium bodied frame. 91(+) points.

Red

2013 Littorai Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Littorai: First of the vineyard designates sampled. Of the four, this was the most fruit forward, generous, gratifying, and ready for prime time. Nice depth and layering to the wine's pure and delicious core of red fruits, with subtle notes of pinot funk and barrel spices that add complexity. As with all of the Littorai wines sampled, this impresses for its balance and deft touch.

Red

2012 Littorai Pinot Noir Les Larmes

Anderson Valley more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 91 points

Tasting at Littorai: Supple, elegant, pure, pretty, and approachable with a profile of tart, tangy, and higher toned red fruits along with floral and tea/herbal qualities. The Les Larmes doesn't quite wine offer the depth or interest of the vineyard designates that followed, but is a very compelling, charming, tasty wine nevertheless.

White

2013 Littorai Chardonnay Thieriot Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 93 points

Tasting at Littorai: There is good richness and weight here, but it is counterbalanced by the wine's lovely acidity that adds lift, verve, and texture, and profile of yellow and green tinged fruits, grilled nuts, and white flowers. I have passed on the Littorai chards in the last few mailers, but this effort will make me reconsider that buying strategy.

Rosť

2014 Littorai Pinot Noir Vin Gris

Anderson Valley more

7/18/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 90 points

Tasting at Littorai: Final wine poured. Aromatically, this is expressive, distinctive, invigorating, and fun with peach, melon, light strawberry, floral, and mineral notes. The palate is half-step behind the nose: Crisp, dry, and limber, albeit turning slightly bitter and flat on the back end.

Red

2007 Copain Syrah James Berry Vineyard

Paso Robles more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Copain: Second of two syrahs poured at the winery, and a stark contrast in terms of size, structure, and profile to the High Rock Ranch. Compared with a bottle of 2007 JB I opened last month, the fruit seems to be a bit riper and more out front here - fig, currant, and blackberry liqueur along with black licorice, tar, and assorted savory notes resting underneath. Full bodied and powerful with plenty of stuffing and grip.

Red

2012 Copain Syrah High Rock Ranch

Yorkville Highlands more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 91 points

Tasting at Copain: This was a nice transition from the flight of pinots. First of two syrahs sampled at the winery. Modestly proportioned with juicy dark red fruits, flowers, and a mineral underpinning. Not the most complex or layered syrah in the Copain portfolio, but it demonstrates nice energy and verve.

White

2013 Copain Chardonnay Dupratt Vineyard

Anderson Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Copain: Final wine of our tasting at Copain. Bonus pour, enjoyed while relaxing in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the valley. Really makes an impression with its verve, briskness, vibrancy, modest proportions and cool, precise profile of citrus zest, white flower/honeysuckle, and minerals. Very nice; I regret not buying this wine during the spring release.

Red

2013 Copain Pinot Noir Wentzel Vineyard

Anderson Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Monument Tree and 2012 Wendling at the winery. Lightest in color of the three wines. Lighter bodied, ethereal, supple, pretty, elegant, fresh, and vibrant with high toned red fruits (thinking strawberry and maybe even a bit of citrus peel) along with spice and forest floor notes. There is a nice spine of acidity that really gives the wine lift and verve, but the softer and rather gentle mouthfeel leads me to suspect this wine may be best consumed on the younger side.

Red

2012 Copain Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard

Anderson Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 94 points

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Monument Tree and 2013 Wentzel at the winery. The most structured, tightly coiled, and seemingly deepest pitched of the three wines. With that said, this drank beautifully with exquisite texture, balance, energy, purity, complexity, precision, and length, offering up a profile of dark red apple peel, rhubarb, exotic spices, and a mineral underpinning. Highly recommended.

Red

2012 Copain Pinot Noir Monument Tree

Anderson Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 93 points

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Wendling and 2013 Wentzel at the winery. This showed the roundest and ripest of the trio with red apple and red cherry along with notions of forest floor, clove, and just a hint of pinot funk to add complexity and range to the aromatic and flavor profile. There is a nice spine of acidity that provides a counterpoint to the core of bright, juicy, and delicious fruit.

Red

2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Luella's Garden Estate Vineyard

Russian River Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Inaugural vintage/release of this bottling. Compared to the Block 10 which preceded it, the Luella's seems more generous and showy with notions of both black and red cherries along with purple flowers and spices. Like the Block 10 it is more medium than full bodied, but the structure of the Luella's doesn't clamp down on the finish to the same degree.

Red

2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Block 10- Mass Selection Estate Vineyard Russian River Valley

more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 93 points

Tasting at Williams Selyem: There are 18 different clonal selections that comprise this bottling. A bit wound up and tightly coiled at this stage, with the wine's structure protruding just a bit. With that said, the refinement, quality, nascent complexity, and potential is already apparent. Offers up a profile of cooler dark red fruits, anise, and a bevvy of spices. Delicious, if a bit pricey (~$85). 93+ points.

Red

2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Eastside Road Neighbors

Russian River Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 91 points

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Smoother, rounder, richer, riper, warmer, and more approachable and showy than the other pinots poured during our tasting with a profile of juicy dark red fruits, sassafras, and rose petal. Still youthful, but seemingly a wine meant for more near to medium term consumption.

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Clean, crisp, fresh, lighter in body, and very approachable/easy drinking with an orchard and slightly tropical profile, along with a white flower/honeysuckle note. The quality and character of this wine becomes more apparent with each successive vintage.

Anderson Valley more

7/24/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 91 points

Modestly proportioned, softer textured, supple, tangy, and juicy with an aromatic and flavor combination of red fruits, spice, and forest floor. Displays that Copain signature sense of purity and verve. Terrific food wine that is very much open for business. From a 375ml purchased off the list at Passionfish.
