2015 Marramiero Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Altare

more

2/4/2019 - The years of the grape wrote: 85 points

Rich example of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, stone fruit, vanilla, honeysuckle, ripe pear. Supple in the mouth, not a fresh style, but I expected it and I bought it for that reason.

The problem is in a disconcerting bitter finish which I suspect could be caused by the very high alcohol: I don't remember having ever seen a white wine at 14.5%! Maybe some Californian Chardonnay, but nothing from Europe for sure. Too bad, I had I hopes for this.

2014 Seguin-Manuel Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières

Pinot Noir more

11/21/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 94 points

Showing beautifully. Fruit aromas, spices from oak and savouryness from ageing. Quite substantial and solid for a Savigny, grippy tannins, but also high acidity.

I think this has at least another five years before it.

2014 Cantine dei Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta Grignolino d'Asti

more

8/19/2018 - The years of the grape wrote: 90 points

Showing signs of the age (some red berry fruit starting to dry on the nose), but very enjoyable in my opinion. Although medium body and quite low in tannins, the acidity is very fresh and the aromas are well defined. I felt rose and pungent spice as well (but no oak used as far as I know).

Not a blockbuster wine for sure, not to be aged further, but these are the bottles that you finish without even noticing.

NV Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta Cuvée Prestige Brut

Franciacorta DOCG Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay more

7/7/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 89 points

And here we are again (third time writing a tasting note on this wine, I set a new personal record).

The point is always the same, but I like to highlight it, as a reminder of what Franciacorta is and what it isn't.
Franciacorta is not Champagne and I think that this wine explains it well: roundness, ripeness, softness. The yeasty aromas reminds me more of Pandoro (typical Christmas pancake of northern Italy) than simple bread and in this one I also smell sweet spice, yellow apple, orange (more than lemon) and even hazelnuts. There is really a roundness that you normally do not find in Champagne, either you like it or not. The acidity is ok, though not piercing, medium concentration, suave. I prefer it a bit warm.

What I would eat with this wine? Actually some stewed meat and potatos come to my mind, maybe with a simple sauce. However a fish fry may be worth a try, or even tempura.

Degorged in autumn 2017.

2013 Segura Viudas Cava Vintage Brut

Macabeo-Xarello-Parellada Blend more

7/7/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 90 points

I like this wine, it is really expressive of the Cava style: lots of smoke, gunflint and rubber on the nose. It is great if you want to clearly understand the peculiarity of Cava. Of course there is also some further complexity: bread crumb, yellow fruit, ginger, white pepper.

On the palate it is bone dry and has nice acidity, but also good structure and creamy, filling bubbles. It dries up the mouth, so I would love to pair it with some fried fish or oily food, it would be really great.

2016 Kir-Yianni Akakies Sparkling

Amyndaio Xinomavro more

7/4/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 89 points

Very nice sparkler made in the tank method from the second pressing of Xinomavro grapes.
If you re-read the first sentence it may not sound appetizing, but in fact it tastes quite good: flowers (rose), fresh strawberry and red cherry fruit and also (but this could be just an impression) a hint of... mortadella. I swear I wasn't eating anything when I tasted it and yet it had this meaty character that stuck into my mind.
The bubbles are fine, the acidity is well balanced by the sugar (18 g/L, quite sweet) and the wine has a nice weight on the palate.

Reasonably priced and well made.

2014 Fattoria La Rivolta Coda di Volpe Sannio Taburno

more

7/1/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 90 points

Fantastic wine.
Out of the fridge it first shows a stony mineral profile which evolves to citrus and green apple at first and then stone fruits, flowers and a touch of honey. Although 4 years old it still feels very fresh and young. Maybe some almond? But it may be just an impression.
Besides, it is well balanced: fresh though not piercing acidity and showing good concentration. No oak, not too heavy, but there is really some quality fruit here.

2016 Seaglass Pinot Noir

Santa Barbara County more

6/29/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 88 points

Honest, not memorable, but honest and a good value for the price.
Lacking on the mid palate, a bit lean, but perfumed, fresh and decently varied in the flavor profile: red fruits, delicate oak, a touch of spice.

Besides, it was still in good shape after a couple of days - and you can store it in the fridge, since there are not that many tannins that can come in the way.

2012 Re Manfredi - Terre degli Svevi Aglianico del Vulture

more

6/28/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 93 points

After having tried the 2013 I did not have many hopes about this one. I was wrong! The 2012, while still concentrated, shows more freshness and complexity, to the point that maybe I should give the 2013 another chance.
The fruit is black and ripe, even slightly stewed, but there is also eucalyptus, licorice, earth, tobacco, meat, dried leaves, along with oak influenced chocolate, vanilla and smoke.
Good acidity balancing the full body and the well chiseled tannins. Nice length.

Was the 2013 a faulted bottle or is the 2012 a better vintage? Difficult to answer.

6/21/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 90 points

Nice and reliable, soft, pleasing, but keeping a slightly "rough" edge to excite the more experienced taster: the fruit is ripe, but not overripe, black cherries and blackberries, enriched by spices, sandalwood and earth. Easy to like, but showing a most welcome savoriness.

Nicely balanced both in the nose and on the palate and good length.

2016 Luca Ferraris Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato Bric D'Bianc

more

6/21/2018 - The years of the grape wrote: 87 points

A bit disappointing. Was Luca Ferraris' Bric d'Bianc always like this? I remembered a very floral and aromatic wine, a bright nectar so pleasant to drink that you didn't even notice you had already finished a bottle.

Sure, this is a honest wine, but too structured, ripe, much less exuberant than what I expect from this grape variety. The aromatic side is subdued. There is much work in this wine, but maybe too much and the alcohol is 14% which surprised me.

When I had the Clàsic some days ago I thought I was drinking a "modern" style Ruché, a structured cuvée made to attract a specific audience and I was just satisfied to feel the interplay of aromas and power. However if even their standard bottling is like this (not very different from the Clàsic) maybe I was wrong and this is simply the (new?) philosophy of this producer.

Very aromatic, floral, with mint, bright red cherry and raspberry. A bit reminding of Beaujolais, a bit Lambrusco-like (but without the usual bubbles).
Very nice and easy to drink and very expressive: this is really what Lacrima should taste like, without heavy manipulations, oak, ripasso methods or appassimentos standing in the way of the varietal character.

2014 Luca Ferraris Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato Clàsic

more

6/14/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 90 points

Aromatic as you would expect from this grape variety, red berries, violets, white pepper, but there is quite some concentration!
Firm body, grippy tannins, elegant acidity: quite intense (14% abv!), but uplifted by its aromatic character, not much oak in the way.
I think it can still age for 3 years, but if you wait longer you might lose that fresh varietal character for which Ruché is famous.

2012 Pauillac de Lynch-Bages Berrys' Own Selection Pauillac

Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/14/2018 - The years of the grape Likes this wine: 88 points

Quite approachable on the nose, fruity, juicy, less earthy and savoury than what I would expect from Bordeaux. Some spice, cinnamon.
Fresh acidity and firm tannins, but I found it a bit lacking on the mid-palate, flowing a bit too easily.
The aromas are flavors have a good intensity though and persist for some time in the aftertaste.

In conclusion an easy drinking Bordeaux, with some concentration and grip. It is not bad to have this kind of wine, especially if you are tired, but do not expect too much.

2016 Maison Anselmet Muscat

Chambave more

6/11/2018 - The years of the grape wrote: 88 points

I am not a big fan of aromatic varieties.

This is well made, fresh and floral as you would expect from a muscat, with some stones as well. The wine is dry, but I would have preferred some more acidity. Anyway, again, the flavor profile is what you should expect when you drink such wines.

If you are into Muscat I think it is perfectly fine.

A bit too "manipulated" maybe: much oak, concentration, with very ripe (almost dried) red berry fruit.
The flavor was not bad, not at all, intense, persistent, but I really struggled to distinguish it from a Sfursat or a dry Amarone. I just felt that it could be from anywhere.

Tinta de Toro, Tempranillo more

5/22/2018 - The years of the grape wrote: 88 points

Deep ruby with garnet hints. At the first sniff you can immediately feel its complexity and age: the black fruit are jammy, the red fruits are dried, there is raisin, coffee, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco, leather, meat, vanilla. The aftertaste is long and savory.

Really an interesting wine, not completely developed but really almost there (still 2-3 years?). Too bad for the lowish acidity and really warm alcohol, coupled with high soft tannins and soft body.
It is probably great on the glass, but quite overwhelming if you have one bottle to drink.

Deep ruby color. Outgoing black fruit, intense, defined and a bit jammy, followed by vanilla and sweet spices. Full body and high tannins, but very soft and voluptuous. Medium acidity, warm aftertaste showing again vanilla and milk chocolate, lasting a while after swallowing.

Very round, but uplifted by the bright (though ripe) fruit. Intriguing.

There is oak and you can feel it, aromas of vanilla, hazelnuts, cream plus tropical fruits (banana, mango). Firm body, supple, not much acidity here, but good intensity and persistence in the mouth.
Typical round white wine from a warm region, if you know what you are getting you won't be disappointed.

Almond, some oak, yeasts, stone fruits, ripe citrus on the nose. On the palate it shows medium acidity and body, although the mouthfeel is very smooth. Medium finish, some bitterness in the aftertaste.

Interesting compromise between richness and freshness, could go as an aperitif or during the meal. Flexible.

Incredibly dense, but also incredibly fresh. Luscious and syrupy, but at the same time showing dried oranges, raisins, dried peaches. Coffee, chocolate and hazelnuts are there as well, but I was really surprised by his uplifted fruitiness. High alcohol, but well integrated.

A real pleasure.
