2004 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere

Sangiovese more

7/31/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

This has stepped up a gear and is really strutting its ass right now - it has lost its more chunky notes and all those tea leaf and cherry notes are slipping out. Light in the mouth, with a whipped cream kind of element in there and then a tang of meat and orange peel. Very refined, very pure and just peeking into a reasonable enough drinking window that you dont feel as though you are killing this wine at birth.

Chunky, meaty and dense and showing little signs of evolution, this needs a bit more time to let the fruit ease off. It does have that 2004 green streak to it and lacks a bit of depth - the test will be holding off long enough to let the fruit mate before it fades. Twist or stick? I'd stick for now.

Still VERY primary - this is going to need another 10 years to come round, a lot like the 1990s that are tight as a drum. 3 hours in a decanter (as per the recommendations below) loosened this up a touch but it is all about black fruit and chunky tannins. Great potential - just leave it for now. I wish I had.

Seems to be either shutting down a touch or thinning out - not sure which. There is a lot of quality here so my guess is that this bottle is just in a cranky phase - HOWEVER - it still has the something-from-nothing aroma of uber-light cherried-fruit and whispy elegance. In a world where everything is turned up to 11 this is turning the dial down to 3 and getting back much more in return.

This is going to need a lot of time in the cellar - super tight, super tannic and with high acidity. 3 days after being open this was just starting to show some development. Easily needs 10 year at least.

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Did I put this in my mouth or has it gone? Where is it? Oh....there it is. This has a fluffy, cloud-like texture at first that bursts with whispy and elegant aromas of ....well, that indescribable Burgundy thing that top Burgundies have. That flavours and textures are oooh and aaaaah and not-like-any-other-place - light, yet brothy and deep at the same time. Very fine boned but over 2 hours this picks up weight. Great stuff. Years ahead. No rush but no shame to drink right now.

This is a proper grown-ups wine - so much refinement, complexity and less-is-more elegance. Very fined boned but the years have given this a touch of meaty hung-game and funky cherry on the nose - there is a lurking sweetness on the nose that comes up on the palate as acidic and tarte - they work well together. Needs food (a nice fatty duck would be brilliant) as the acidity really starts to show after 2 hours.

As a side note I drank from both a Zalto Burgundy glass and a Spiegelau Burgundy glass - the Zalto really accentuated the game and perfume, whereas the Spiegelau brought out the fruit.

Incredible potential here that to be honest doesn't feel like it will need 400 years to come through - beautiful nose of crushed rocks and flowers wrapped around a meaty core that appears out of nowhere. This is no angular, woody wine - the tannins are so soft and beautiful it cries out for mushrooms and truffles. Regal, perfumed and elegant. A serious long term wine, but right now (before it no doubt shuts down for 5 years) this is showing well. Time to stick in the cellar and report back in 5+ years.

Starting to peek through - lot of softer fruit and tannins that feel rather softer than you should expect. Delicate cherries with damp soil and a new-world tang to it. Needs more time for the terroir to come through, Decent enough now, but I'd leave this for a while

Very clear on the eye, this has a slightly richer nose then expected with watermelon notes and then some oaty elements. Good depth on the palate, very rounded, although a tangy after taste. Not 100% convinced about this one - there is a boiled vegetable tang in there.

Fresh breezy and restrained palate - has an element of the sea air about it with a firm finish. This is excellent - the sake equivalent of a nice firm Chablis.

Superb for so many reasons. This is the equal of many a 1er cru Chablis but for less than £10 - crackling with energy, minerals, ripe fruit this coats the palate without ever feeling heavy or flabby. This estate really are turning out some incredible wines. This has that lemon-curd tang on the palate but with taut minerals crackling away on top. Good acidity, great value.

Ridiculously good value for a wine that is layered with quality all the way from the first sniff through to the deep, layered palate and long aftertaste. Flinty, with clotted cream aromas, buttermilk, lemons - but this is no glop-bomb, it has a zing and freshness to it that sits brilliantly on top of the fruit. Impressive now, will age. Very very impressive wine that would stand in for a very high quality white burgundy.

6/28/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

It is places like Givry, Marsannay, Mercury and the like that are providing shelter from the higher prices across the board in Burgundy, and that means exploring brilliant producers like Lumpp - this is already impressive with a firm, taut spine of iron, red fruits but a touch of development and depth. Plums, some orange peel and mineral-loaded palate - a definite keeper and very good value. Approachable now, will keep 10+ years easy.

The fruit is pretty-much up front and centre right now, all slutty and sweet but there is some very good quality lurking underneath. Lots of rich cherry and black fruit - but time in the decanter lets the sweetness back off a touch and the more rigid elements poke through. This is a lovely drink right now, if a little forward. I reckon this could be lovely in 5 years or so - I've stuck plenty away in the cellar.

Like smacking together two pieces of flint - minerals, stones, rain water. Green tinge, very mineral, sheer palate. I like it. The anti fruit bomb. A lot of sediment in the glass but a crunchy, angular wine that works well in summer. Probably a bit too spiky for some.

Fairly hollowed out middle of the road Bordeaux starting to show some age. Usually a pretty decent wine that hangs on well into its second decade but this one is a bit empty. Classical but lightweight - nevertheless, excellent value at £12. Gives up that classical Bordeaux palate before things were all dialled up to 11.

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): Signature black fruit and fine tannins - impressive depth for a stupid stupid low price - again, I would struggle to name Gamay as the grape - this is more pinot noir from Marsannay. £13 of utter "i am pretending this is £50 burgundy" pleasure.

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): I like it? I love it. Much more open than the 2006 Clos de Rochegrès from the same producer - deep black fruit with a compact cool fruit feel with very sweet tannins - very fine, confident with a feral under current. These Chateau des Jacques do somewhat challenge what is accepted as Beaujolais - in and of itself this is great wine. I'm drinking this as a £20 replacement for awesome Burgundy. Great stuff - still young, let it rest. Or drink the ass of it and buy more - you wont find this price/quality up the road in Cotes de Nuits.

5/31/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): Very fine boned fruit and texture with the black fruit giving up a compact, cool feel - needs time in a decanter to open up the palate, but even then this is reserved. I like it - very nuanced, very Corton-like at time. This is a lot of wine for the money. Beaujolais disguised as extremely good Burgundy. The secondary characteristics are peeking out but this needs more time.

5/30/2015 - pjaines wrote: NR

Some Grand Crus are more equal than others - this bears that out with a pinched, clipped finish. Decent enough and showing some evolution from a couple of years back but this shows the limitations of the terroir in relation to other Grand Crus. Red fruit, cherry and funky little streak running through it - nice enough but there is a touch of drying tannin in here that adds some bitterness to the finish.

There is a LOT of potential here - and to be fair I'm not feeing too guilty about opening a bottle now. Time in the decanter really is required right now - 2hrs seems to do it - and brings out the firmer cherry notes. Layered, complex but quite rich at the moment. A lot of fat on the bones right now.
