2000 Château Figeac

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/11/2004 - Will wrote: NR

On the nose the wine is already quite evolved with notes of mushrooms/sous-bois, a bit of menthol, the typical blackberries. Very profound and complex nose. On the palate the wine is like silk, very elegant, tannins well integrated, superb balance, it coats the mouth: delicious. The finish is at the same level as the rest, impressive. This is really one of the most delightful Bordeaux I've had so far. We didn't even have to decant it. What was impressive about this wine was certainly not the first 5 minutes, but more the fact that we couldn't keep away from it. My last words, while looking at the empty bottle in my hand: "The only problem with this bottle... is that it was only 750ml"

11/27/2004 - Will wrote: NR

Impressive young champagne already showing some aged champagne characteristics, with very fine bubbles. Still very young and needs time but has the potential to become a truly great champagne. Not particularly interesting to drink right now, hold for at least 4-5 years (assuming you like aged champagne).

I think this is a merlot-syrah blend. Very profound wine for such an appelation. Very powerful nose (red berries), concentrated and develops well in the mouth, long finish. Awesome QPR.

Just after I opened the bottle, the nose was quite muted, as well as the palate. I decided to let the wine rest for about one hour before trying again. Not much more then, but the wine developed very slowly in the glass over several hours. The nose was a mix of fruit and animal notes, although it felt a bit like the animal part had been added on top of the fruit - the 2 kind of aromas were not really integrated. The palate was ok but nothing special, same goes for the finish. Overall a very good CdP, but not exceptional. I just wish I could have pumped up the volume a bit here. I can only guess it was a bad bottle.

Very nice expression of Grenache, great nose (cherries). Good introduction to Grenache for a very low price. Very balanced wine, not exceptional but charming and definitely worth its price.

2000 Château Citran

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/2/2004 - Will wrote: NR

First tried straight after opening, intense nose, very fruit forward. Palate a bit less interesting than the nose, still very tannic and somewhat hard/astringent/hard edges. After some time, less tannic but the oak started to appear, a bit too much for my taste. After one day in the fridge, new aromas on the nose, especially chocolate, and the palate is much rounder - however the finish is now very short. A great Bdx QPR, I am sure I will enjoy the 11 remaining bottles a lot over the next few years.

10/23/2004 - Will wrote: NR

Very dark red, almost black. Primary nose with notes of fruit (blackberries), plus very strong earth, both in aroma and also in feeling, i.e. astringent, rough, slightly green. A lot of pleasure in this bottle, and ok to drink right now - however it is also lacking in complexity at the moment, and can certainly age some more. Reminded me somewhat of the 94 Pontet-Canet I had earlier this year. I am often disappointed by the Bdx I have in this price range (20-30 euros) but this one was delivering - although I need to stress it was lacking in complexity, which I hope is due to its youth.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): A very surprising wine. Much less sweet than I expected, almost off-dry for me. Nice aromas of apricot, prune. Good balance, very long finish. Would probably go very well either with terrine or with a pie.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): I was slightly surprised by this one since it showed quite different aro;as fro; when I tried it at the winery. Although it had the same mouthfeel (very tannic) than I remembered, and although I still find it an incredible effort (and success!), especially for this vintage, the one I remembered was mainly on fruit/primary aromas. This one showed very strong sweaty and barnyard-like aromas on the nose. They faded after a while but could still be felt. Very good, but less than I remembered.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): Unfortunately the bottle was slightly corked - after a while in the decanter it almost completely disappeared though, and the wine was very drinkable. However I am afraid some of the fruit might have faded away due to this. For a very nice expression of grenache, I would say old vines due to the very strong cherries aromas. Not as funky as I would have thought from Beaucastel. Delicious nonetheless, that's probably the bottle we drank the quickest in the whole evening. Regarding the price, I would say this is a bit expensive for what it is and I had the impression to pay a bit for the name - however this is based on an assessment of the wine as it is now - since it clearly has enough structure to age nicely, it might turn out to be much better in a couple of years, and then deserve its price.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): A more evolved bottle than the one I had 2 days before - still a lot of fruit but masked a bit by oak. Also starting to show tertiary aromas of coffee and leather. This one was a bit too oaky for my taste, but it had all the "funk" I was expecting compared to the very fruit-driven previous bottle. a really good QPR.

10/20/2004 - Will wrote: NR

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): A totally different expression of Pinot Gris than the normal cuvée from the same producer. The nose was a bit funky with some slight mushrooms/fermentation notes. The wine is very focused and less exuberant than the normal one. People liked both of them for different reasons, although I personnally preferred the more fruit forward regular bottling.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): A very nice off-dry Pinot Gris, great way to start a tasting. This should be perfect as apéritif or with cheese. Nice acidity, lovely fruit, this wine has something to express and is quite far from the dull expression of Pinot Gris one can usually get with cheaper wines.

QPR tasting #1 (Frankfurt): A very nice wine from Roussillon, one can feel the sunshine out of the glass. Quite "new world" in style, nobody thought it was a French wine! Very ripe fruit, quite tannic, clear oakiness but well integrated. Can age a little more. The kind of wines that bring a smile to my face.

Opened on the 5th and drunk straight from the bottle: the wine was really closed and clearly not showing its potential. At that stage it was quite comparable to a good CdR: nice nose, monolithic palate, short finish. I could really feel the alcohol in the wine and I only drank a couple of glasses. On the 6th, after one day in the fridge, the wine was much better: really nice grenache nose, slightly spicy but still very much on the fruit. The palate was starting to evolve with at the same time nice fruit and then some chocolate aromas. Nice structure and the alcohol was very well integrated into the wine. The finish was much longer than on the previous day. Yummy: I actually finished the bottle by myself in the course of the evening. I would advise to wait for a couple more years before it is really ready to drink, right now it is still very much on primary aromas. If consumed now I would advise at least 2 hours of decanting.

I was quite excited when I opened this bottle since most 2000 red Burgs seem to be drinking well right now. However I was quickly disappointed: the wine shows way too much oak for me. Actually I could barely taste anything else than these pervasive new oak aromas. Even after a couple of days the wine remained exactly the same - in the end I realised that, if served blind, I would have said this wine was a simple, rather oaky, spicy/peppery, grenache based southern Rhone. The only hope is that the oak will integrate better into the wine with age, but I have serious doubts.

Very nice fruit for this Southern Rhône. My second bottle and I still like it very much. Seems to have the necessary structure to age a bit. For the moment it's still very much on the fruit and primary aromas. Something I liked in particular was the way this wine seems to coat the sides of the mouth and of the tongue. Really nice finish for a wine in this price category.

Way too much alcohol to be a really interesting wine. Very extracted and very discernable oak treatment. Starts with vanilla and moves on to coconut, develops in the glass but never reaches (for me) a satisfactory level of complexity - this is probably just not my style. I will wait and try one with some more age to see if it's getting any better.

Red Rhone Blend more

6/26/2004 - Will wrote: 87 points

From what I read in Parker's book, Henri Bonneau hesitated to bottle this vintage - so I was a bit afraid when I opened it. It was much better than I thought, in a very light, ethereal style with nice fruit. No signs of problems at all except the wine was rather diluted for a CdP. I would compare it easily with some 2002 CdPs I had recently. Charming and complex but not completely up to the best CdP standard. Still very yummy.
