2010 Giovanni Canonica Barolo Paiagallo

No formal notes. Raw, visceral and rustic tannins. Sensationally pure red fruits, rocks herbs and forest floor. More powerful than the 08 but never heavy. I wish I had taken more descriptive notes. Imagine cappellano in the village of barolo. I can't put a number score on this... it is the essence of pure, unpolished and unrestricted barolo. Reminds me of b mascarello fruit and g rinaldi structure, though its a bit unpolished in a great way. I love this.

Nose of cinnamon, clove, coffee and roses. Lovely blackberry that is both sweet and tart on the palate. Tannins have resolved notably over the past year or so. This may hold on a bit longer but I think it's at peak now. Great value for a classicist wine that totally speaks true of the varietal and the vintage. This is the kind of wine for people who drink for purity, elegance and finesse... not for power or points.

This wine can be seriously misunderstood for those who pop and pour. It opens with a somewhat unappealing nose of sweet & sour sauce and a muted palate of earthy cherry. After an hour it picks up an element of english breakfast tea. After a 6 hour slow ox, the wine cleans up into a beautiful expression of classic nebbiolo. Tons of roses, tar and menthol. Picks up lots of freshness with lovely crunchy red cherries and delightful spiceyness. Absolutely fantastic right now of you give it enough time to slow ox. Delicious

2008 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

Gorgeous nose of strawberry, cinnamon spice, herbs and olive that seems to be signature of Burlotto’s Monvigliero. Young but so airy and elegant. This has put on some weight as it shows more of the 2008 silky sweet tannins and less dusty stems than the last bottle 6 months ago. The crystalline purity of the red berry fruit and overall balance make this is absolutely delicious right now. The lithe and bright acidity suggests very a promising future. Very Vosne-Romanee but inthe ocntext of barolo.

Texturally, the 2008 is even silkier than the densely packed 2006 and the forward 2009.

I ordered online from vine2home. The owner couldn't be nicer and the bottles have all been pristine... not to mention insanely good pricing. I happily stocked up.

TONS of airy madagascar peppercorn with garden herbs, cranberry and a bit of watermelon rind. Perfumed, very fresh and perfect with grilled seafood. Absolutely consistent with Burlotto's expressive house style of elegance, balance and gorgeous purity. Not complex like the monvigliero barolo but this pelaverga is just as unique. In a world of over-oaked fruit bombs, I can't over emphasize how much I enjoy this DELICIOUS bottling.

I totally understand why this style isnt popular... but I continue to fall in love with rennaisance at Burlotto. Ben fatto, Fabio Alessandria.

Day 1: Explosive nose of herbs, forest floor, dried strawberries and bitter tangerine rinds with a bit of fresh whipped cream. Palate had the surreal Burlotto Monvigliero silkyness, even moreso than the 2008 vintage. I am generally not a fan of the 2009 Barolos but Verduno is so far north that this wine manages great balance and elegance.

Day 2: Much of the same from day 1, but add prominent sweet strawberry concentrate to the nose. The body picks up a bit more midpalate depth which was lacking on day 1 and I hope this continues to put on some weight in the cellar. Still too young today.

Overall: Classic, beautifully pure and totally compelling. As if someone took the apline herbiness and red fruit core of Gattinara and somehow blended it with a bit of the cool sweet ripeness of Barolo/La Morra. I keep drawing parallel's between Burlotto's Monvigliero and LdH Tondonia. I love it's charm!

Roses and dark ripe fruit that is very fresh and pure. There is a creaminess to the black cherry liquor but this wine bounces on the edge of over ripeness and the alcohol creeps up from time to time which can throw the wine off balance. After a few hours, tar and tobacco become more prominent. Overall maybe just a bit too ripe, but still very fine and drinkable in its youth. The tannins are present but not overpowering and, in this vintage, I prefer the elegance of this blended barolo more than the power of the Brunate cru bottling - though both are beautifully traditional and great values at their respective price points.

Knock out nose of ice tea, herbs, pot purri and strawberries. The pot purri, in particular, was a bit reminiscent of the '76. Delicate and nuanced flavors of tart cranberies and forest floor on the palate. Held strong for a good 5+ hours. My two two prior bottles of this vintage have been quite lackluster but this particular one was an absolutely beautiful example of Tondonia.

Stylistically similar to Voillot bourg rouge. Don't be fooled by the silly label, this is a seriously traditional effort. Bright tart berries, light florals and nice pinot extract but the acidity is a bit over bearing, despite my overal preference for the 2010 red burgs.

Intense herbaceousness and potpourri dominate the nose with dusty strawberry fruit on the palate. Seems to be missing the mellow sweetness of the tannins that I love in the 08 barolos - a result of whole cluster? Great burgudian balance of power-to-weight and exceptionally soft and polished mouthfeel. Shuts down tight, even after a 12 hour slow o in the bottle but suggests it will evolve into something unique and seductive down the line.

Worth noting that their straight Nebbiolo is a wonderfully well made wine and consistent with this classic house style.

Nose of sweet herbs and cranberries with a bit of smoke that becomes more prominent with air. On the palate it shows much of the same, supported by classic alpine nebbiolo acidity and medium weight but lacks refinement and focus. Becomes bitter within the hour and, to me, falls out of balance. Nice effort and I love it's traditional approach, but for the same price I would seek out Vallana Gattinara or Boca instead (although stylistically this is closest to their Cuvée Bernardo bottling).

I bought this based on the note written by 'ChazBham' ...he nailed it. Killer value for traditional Nebbiolo at this price point. I'll add: Kind of LdH Tondonia in its dusty strawberry, herbs and elegant but deft structure...less the extended time in barrel.
