IMO, Troplong Mondot is one of the most modern Bordeauxs going back to the last 80s. More often than not, my tasting notes include “port like” and this is no exception. Quite expressive nose displaying extremely ripe black fruits, blackberry liqueur, cassis, tar, baking spices, dark caramel, truffle, lavender, mineral and earth. Excellent concentration, very silky palate, blackberry liqueur driven palate impression, bright acidity, noticeable sweet tannins and sweet mineral finish with a hint of alcohol at the end. The house style is strongly imprinted in the wine yet it shows bright acidity and tannins which can be attributed to the vintage. I can see this becoming like the 89 in ten years. If you are familiar with Bordeaux, you know where you stand, i.e. you either love or hate TM. If you prefer a ripe/opulent fruit driven Bordeaux, this is a good QPR in the current market.

This flamboyant fruit has settled. Very similar nose as the last bottle two years ago but not as strong fruit notes and more noticeable burn sugar. Dense yellow fruit driven nose, mango and peach, strong burnt sugar and botrytis, ginger and clove. Incredibly thick but not cloying due to strong presence of acidity, a hint of red and yellow fruit combined with strong burnt sugar, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Since the release, I have always believed that this is a level below the 01 D’Yquem and Climen sand this convinced me once again. Nevertheless this is an exceptional Sauternes.

Bought at release and kept in Eurocave. I often find very ripe black cherry with a hint of licorice in Vogue wines and this is no exception. Subtle nose displaying shy Chambolle red fruits, also black cherry and licorice coming from very ripe fruits, rose, baking spices, a hint of sous bois, soy and stem, mushroom and earth. There is a hint of oxidative note as well. Medium concentration, Chambolle airiness, shy red fruit driven palate impression with a hint of overripe black cherry, mineral, slightly lacking acidity, noticeable slightly dry tannins and medium slightly bitter finish. This definitely hints Chambolle elegance and Musigny structure, kind of an iron fist in a velvet glove. My main issues are slightly lacking fruit concentration for the structure at this stage, a hint of oxidative note and slightly dry tannins. This is a poor QPR for my palate.

Crunch blue and black fruit driven nose, perfectly ripe crushed blackberries and blueberries, strong tapenade note, smoked meat, white pepper and wild flowers. Excellent concentration but not as concentrated as the 05 and also a bit cooler overall impression, polished silky palate, a bit of olive, flowers and blackberry driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long finish. This seems almost ready to go but no need to hurry. Lovely showing.

This is still a baby but if you enjoy opulent young syrah fruit, you will enjoy this a lot. Not as kinky and complex as La Las but still very impressive and enjoyable.

Excellent concentration, intense sweet red fruit driven palate impression, dense yet silky and polished palate, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long sweet finish with a hint of VA at the end. This and Rayas always seem wonderfully balanced despite having very sweet and slightly dry fruits. Drinking extremely well but if you don’t care for VA, this is not the wine for you.

More red fruit driven compare to the 03 Pegau, intense ripe sweet red fruits, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, rare steak, animal and earth. Exceptional concentration, intense jammy red fruit driven palate impression, nicely layered fruits, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. This also needs another decade but is already quite enjoyable.

Beautifully perfumed nose displaying kirsch mixed with chambord, black cherries, fruitcake, dark spices, a hint of garrigue and earth. Exceptional concentration, dense and decadent blackberry driven palate impression, nutmeg, good acidity, only a hint of the 03 roasted fruits, nicely integrated tannins and very long finish. This quite expressive bottle shows very nice balance. Still quite youthful and another ten years of cellaring will add more garrigue and tobacco. I wish all the bottles show like this.

At least one person thought it was tired. My guess is that it was slightly angular from the get go. It will work well with a steak or lamb chop.

Sweet decadent red fruit driven nose, sous bois, strawberry, cherry liqueur, a small hint of 2003 roasted fruit, rose water and leather. Medium concentration, warm and round, sweet slightly dry red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long sweet finish. Great contrast to the 03 Pegau and Clos de Papes, better balance, more mature, less concentrated and less 03ish.

Intense flamboyant sweet tropical fruit nose, pineapple, yellow peach, mango, papaya, pine needle, lilac, mineral and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, dense and chewy, tropical fruit driven palate impression, warm and round and long finish that ends with a bit of heat. As usual, some will love and others will hate. A lot better balance and surprisingly fresh for a ten year old SQN white.

Expressive but relatively straightforward nose of ripe yellow fruits, grapefruit, tangerine, marzipan lanoline, honey and mineral. Medium concentration, ripe yellow fruit and honey driven palate impression, not much acidity and sweet medium finish. This particular bottle is quite expressive and at its peak which is a pleasant surprise. Drinking extremely well.

Classic young CC nose of fresh sweet citrus and pit fruits, mineral and a hint of sesame/toast which I attribute to the barrel. Expressive vibrant nose displaying candied lemon peel, lemon curd, white peach, flint, wet stone, a hint of toasted oak/sesame, white pepper and mineral. Exceptional concentration, quite chewy and dense without being heavy, sweet white fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long deeply toned finish that resonates. Exceptional wine and great relative value. If you enjoy young CC with slightly riper style, I highly recommend it.

This is very much ready with round, warm and dense expression. This actually got fresher with an hour of air. I would recommend an hour or two of decanting. Really nicely balanced and approachable example of Aubert.

Despite Forey’s reputation for having a formidable structure, I hoped this young wine will be pseudo enjoyable considering the vintage. Intense perfectly ripe blackberries, blackberry jelly, liquid smoke, a hint of stem, mocha, a hint of Vosne spice and earth. Exceptional concentration, intense jammy blackberry driven palate impression, strong presence of mineral, good acidity, noticeable but non-obtrusive tannins and intense long sweet finish. This is an intense and structured wine that will peak in twenty years or more. Totally impressive and enjoyable at this young age.

Recently acquired six bottles via auction along with six bottles of the 90 Il Poggiolo (Cosimi) Brunello di Montalcino Sassello which I can’t recommend as it taste like cedar juice. Once highly sought after but now like the ugly duckling. Beautiful classic Brunello nose displaying dry cherry, tar, rose, licorice, leather and earth. Incredibly polished palate, quite rich yet cool and precise, dry cherry driven palate impression, strong presence of mineral and earth, good acidity, still noticeable but polished tannins and lovely red fruit driven long finish. Still incredibly youthful but perfectly enjoyable. I can only guess that another five to ten years of cellaring with bring more tar and sweet caramel. A pleasant surprise and I highly recommend.

Exceptional concentration, intense sweet cassis driven palate impression, bright acidity and nicely integrated tannins. This is very California cult cab like. It is already very enjoyable if you like the primary fruit driven expression but will reach the first stage of peak in ten to fifteen years.
