2007 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre

Gamay more

Really nice. Lots of bright, sappy cherry and red berried fruit here tinged with earth and floral notes, all conveyed with a sense of finesse and polish on a medium weight frame. It's a much bigger wine than the standard Lapierre Morgon, but while there's more density and depth here, it has the same freshness and liveliness to the flavours that I always expect from Lapierre.

This is just awesome on so many levels. It's the sort of wine where I could spend a lot of time just enjoying the aromatics and following it over a few hours, with an array of flavours ranging from fresh citrus fruits and green beans to herbs, flowers, stone, and more developed creamy elements, but there's also a sheer refreshment and sense of freshness here that makes it all too easy to just drink a glass without even thinking, for pure, visceral pleasure. Thankfully I was able to do both at various points of the dinner. The balance here is incredible with powerful acidity beneath the bright fruit, and there's incredible persistence to the flavours on the finish. Stunning wine.

Another great bottle of this. Just what I'd expect from a young Hirtzberger - the intensity here is dialed up to 11, just like Nigel's amplifier. Incredibly dense and powerful on the palate, with an array of ripe tropical fruits, peaches, and tarter citrus flavours, and more exotic floral and herbal notes on the nose. It's a huge wine, but there's no shortage of acidity beneath, and it's a lot of fun to drink now - though I'm glad my remaining bottles are stashed in storage.

This is drinking so much better than I remember from a bottle a few years ago. An intensely minty, herbal fragrance with other green fruit - gooseberry and ripe citrus flavours - on the palate, augmented by a vivid chalky mineral character beneath. Powerful, yet very light on its feet with great precision and focus. Lovely wine.

This really benefited from some air; fresh citrus fruit and figgy flavours tinged with saline notes at first, but with air it becomes deeper and more nutty, as toasted almond and walnut flavours develop, and the saline/briny quality on the palate gets more intense. Very fresh and light, with great balance.

Really nice, classic Chablis with a vivid stony and saline mineral fragrance, and more understated flavours of tart citrus fruit, fennel, and faint floral notes beneath that keep developing with air. Light and precise on the palate with lively acidity, and good length.

The last bottle of Catoir Rieslaner in my cellar, and it goes out on a really high note. Definitely among the best of the bottles I've opened; a bright orange-gold colour, and an intoxicating fragrance combining ripe apricot and pineapple fruit with honey and higher toned ginger, horseradish, and other spicy notes. As usual it's intensely sweet and rich on the palate, more Beerenauslese than Auslese, but wow, there's incredible acidity beneath and a long finish that stays long after each sip. Stunning wine that leaves me wishing I had bought more of the HGS Rieslaners, and not just the Scheurebes and Rieslings.

Definitely one of the better 2013s I've had. It's very primary still and doesn't come across especially complex, but there's remarkable cut and focus here, and a real sense of purity to the bright lime, green apple and pear fruit here. It's moderately sweet with powerful acidity that gives it great lift and balances the residual sugar perfectly, and there's a crystalline mineral character beneath the fruit. Lovely with the spicier food at Umi Nom.

A sub-par showing, not quite on the level of previous bottles that I've enjoyed, though still a really impressive wine. There's an astringent quality to the nose with a stony/asphalt-like note dominating, and the fruit and floral elements rather reticent. The palate is another matter entirely - it's incredibly plush and layered with an array of ripe orchard fruits, flowers, and mineral notes, great complexity and remarkable focus and persistence. Still a really enjoyable wine to drink, but this didn't the heights of other bottles I've had in the past.

Really liked this with some air. Tight and unyielding initially, showing a lot of stemmy and herbal notes around a core of dark fruited flavours, but a couple of hours after decanting it's much more expressive, with black olive, underbrush, and faintly meaty notes all emerging around the fruit and stemmy notes. Fantastic balance, with a graceful, middleweight palate presence and bright acids giving it lift, and very easy to drink.

Just an awesome Côte-Rôtie that's drinking superbly right now. Briny olive flavours, red fruits, vivid bacon and meaty notes, with great intensity of flavour and remarkable finesse on the palate. There's still a little grainy tannin on the back end and powerful acidity beneath that suggests it could last a while longer - but it's so good right now. Fantastic.

Heat damaged, with stewed notes on the nose, and the palate coming across thin and hollow. Sourced from Spectrum Wine Auctions. I've had this several other times and it's been fantastic (those bottles sourced from Chambers St. Wines), but this was clearly not stored well.

A leaking bottle that I opened way too early - seepage aside, this still feels incredibly young with a tinge of sulfur lingering despite a short decant, and very fresh, youthful citrus, apple, and peachy fruit framed by floral and slate notes. Classic Prüm - moderate sweetness here, less than many modern Spätlese, and fantastic balance with remarkable lightness on the palate and no shortage of acidity. One of those Auslese that's perfect to drink with food, though I really need to be more patient with my remaining bottles, seepage or not.

Easily the best 2013 German Riesling I've had. This is flat out amazing. There's very little apparent botrytis here - just an array of incredibly ripe, fresh peach, pineapple, peach, and red fruited flavours tinged with honey and floral notes. It's intensely sweet and powerful on the palate, yet remarkably light and delicate with powerful acidity beneath, and amazing length.

First experience with this producer and I'm immediately a big fan. There's remarkable depth and complexity for a village wine here, with an array of red and dark fruited flavours on the nose and palate, tinged with more savoury earthy elements and some high toned spicy notes. Medium weight and very graceful on the palate with fine grained tannins, and all too easy to drink.

Pretty much everything I'd want from a Chambolle - Bertheau nails it again. At first it's all about incredibly fresh, sappy red fruited flavours tinged with bright floral notes, but with more air it turns more savoury and earthy. Remarkably graceful and finessed, with serious depth on the palate and a lightness of touch ot the flavours. Fantastic wine.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: Absolutely stunning wine that leaves me wondering why more CDP can't taste like this. This is all about freshness and lightness. Really bright, high toned red fruited flavours tinged with floral notes, more faint stemmy and herbal elements, and a stony/earthy element on the back end. The label indicates 14.5% alcohol but this doesn't show it at all - it's remarkably graceful on the palate with very fine grained tannins, and really bright acidity that gives it lift. Remarkable depth and length, and the first bottle at the table to be emptied.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: I have had a ton of bottle variation with the '85 Raffault, but this was definitely one of the best bottles I've come across. No brett in this one, it's all fresh dark berried fruit, green forestal, herbal and faintly leafy notes, and more developed earthy - almost gravelly - notes all coming together very seamlessly on the nose and palate. The tannin seems fully integrated, and most of the structure remaining comes from the acidity, which keeps it remarkably fresh and lively on the palate. Remarkably good match with the pizza.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: Nowhere near as good as the last couple of times I had it. It's well balanced with bright red fruit and some savoury earthy flavours, but there's nothing here that speaks of Syrah or Côte-Rôtie, and while it's pleasant enough to drink, it's a totally anonymous wine with no distinctive character at all. A huge disappointment.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: Wow, the acidity here is something else. Piercingly bright citrus and white fruited flavours layered with an array of stony and saline mineral notes, and more flamboyant floral elements, but what really makes this a wow wine is the sheer cut and focus on the palate. Despite the incredible acidity it never feels austere or shrill, and the balance and length are incredible. Stunning wine.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: This is a bit of a disappointment by Alzinger's standards - an excellent wine, though not quite showing the level of finesse and depth that I usually expect from Alzinger. Lots of bright, focused citrus, pear and riper peach fruit tinged with mineral and floral notes, though the palate seems rather ripe and fleshy without the cut and focus of Alzinger's other Smaragds. Time and air bring out more mineral and herbal notes, but it perhaps suffered a bit in contrast to the Prager and Jamek poured alongside.

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: Fantastic stuff. This is in a great place right now - there are layers of mature baked apple, peach, and other orchard fruit flavours with burnished tinges, and smoky and mineral accents around the fruit that keep getting more complex and layered with air, with all the flavours coming together really seamlessly on the palate. Amazing depth and complexity here with powerful acids beneath the bright fruit, and a remarkably long finish.
