This is spectacular. What an amazing fragrance - incredibly fresh, slightly tart cherry and pomegranate fruit framed by floral notes, vivid stony and earthy elements, and a whiff of leathery funk not unlike what I've experienced in a few Truchots. The palate's very pretty though not quite on the level of the nose; lightweight with a bright acid spine giving the fruit lift, though there's some grainy tannin on the back and a sense of rusticity with each sip.

This certainly shows some of that '96 leanness - a bit lean on the midpalate with powerful acidity and some grainy tannin on the back end, but there's also plenty of bright red fruit with low-toned earthy and spicy accents. The structure eases up a little with air and this becomes more approachable to drink and more fragrant. Really nice, especially with the shredded beef and smoked tea duck at GS.

Very similar to my last bottle. Classic Grüner flavours with that minty/herbal/mineral signature of Steinertal, and the finesse and lightness I always expect from Alzinger. Yup, Alzinger apparently doesn't do "off" vintages.

What a treat to have this again. This has changed a bit from my last experience five years ago, but it's still a stunning (albeit rather different) wine. There's incredible complexity here - a spectrum of ripe fruits ranging from limes and apples to more tropical flavours, augmented by vanilla cream, honey, and sweet pastry-like notes. It comes across like a very rich but botrytis-free Auslese, though there's more than enough acidity here to match the sweetness, and the overall balance is impeccable. Thanks Todd.

One of the highlights in an evening filled with some real gems. This is absolutely stunning. Lots of richness here - an array of citrus, apple, and riper orchard fruits tinged with sweet honey and floral notes, and a stony mineral base beneath. It has the sweetness and intensity of Auslese, but the cut, focus, and sense of lightness I'd expect from a Schaefer Kabinett. Absolutely stunning wine with amazing depth and finesse, and remarkable length.

Not quite the electric experience that the 2008 was, but this is still really good. The aromatics are fantastic with all sorts of bright floral, spicy, herbal, and grapefruit elements, but the palate never seems to show the same level of depth, and I'm left wanting a touch more acidity.

Tired and over the hill, with very little of interest here. There's some faded apple fruit apparent, but not much else of note. Such a shame - these old Reinhartshausens can be so good otherwise.

Much better than the first bottle I opened. None of the initial awkwardness; just lots of fresh red fruits, more savoury anise and tarry elements, and sweeter floral and herbal notes emerging with more air. There's a fair bit of tannin lurking beneath but it's not overwhelming right now due to the richness of the fruit.

Another winner. Perhaps not quite as intense and complex as the last bottle I opened (can't be too shocked with some variation from a 25 year old St. Joseph), but still wonderful with lots of savoury meaty and briny elements around the red fruited core.

Really liked this. Light on its feet but with plenty of intensity to the flavours; lots of fresh red and dark berried fruit tinged with floral and higher toned spicy notes, and a more savoury earthiness that emerges with air. There's a fair bit of grainy tannin here that softens with air, but it's very nice to drink now.

The January auction Eiswein, with the old school (pre-95) label. This is absolutely spectacular, and more than lives up to the hype. Incredible power and concentration here, yet it's matched by tremendous precision, focus, and a sense of lightness on the palate that is completely at odds with the sheer intensity of the wine. The flavours are classic Eiswein; honey, high toned spices, and an array of candied citrus and peachy fruit with no apparent botrytis. The level of intensity here is hard to put into words, but each sip seems to resonate for minutes. Absolutely thrilling wine.

Phenomenal wine. Drinking so well now (popped and poured) with an array of fresh red fruited flavours, floral notes, tinges of spice and more savoury earthy and faintly smoky elements. Remarkably light on its feet with the acids giving it good lift, and so fragrant with incredible depth and presence. Everything that I want a Grand Cru Burg to be.

An unusual showing for a Mouton with a surprising amount of brett. A big whiff of leathery funk on the nose at first, but beneath is plenty of that flamboyant Mouton character with sandalwood and spicy notes framing red and dark berried fruit. This is drinking very well with some time in the decanter, still showing a bit of grainy tannin on the finish, but very enjoyable.

Really bright, piercing citrus and green apple fruit tinged with yeasty, chalky, and biscuit-like notes. Lots of focus and vibrancy on the palate with bright acids and effervescence, but it doesn't show quite the level of depth I'd expect from this site.

Dec 2004 disgorgement again from the 98/99 vintage. Lots of complexity here, like my last bottle, but doesn't show the level of focus and precision on the palate that the previous one did. It comes across a touch softer and more creamy in texture, but the array of fruit, doughy, mineral, and more savoury flavours here are really compelling, and it's a wine I'm glad to own a few more of.

Fantastic Riesling that's all about lightness and clarity. Fresh citrus, peach, and more tropical fruited flavours with some floral notes and sponti-yeast funk, all over a base of pure stone. The stony mineral character here is remarkably vivid and gets even more intense with air, and all the while this is incredibly refreshing and easy to drink.

Contrary to others, I didn't find this all that rewarding young. There's a lot of bright Syrah fruit and peppery/floral notes, but it doesn't show any of the more savoury, complex olive, stemmy, or sauvage elements that made the other young Gonons so thrilling to drink on release. But there's plenty of density and structure here for the long haul - I'll leave my rest alone for a while.

Fantastic, old school Rhone with lots of leathery, truffled, meaty, and briny flavours framing a core of red fruit that's still remarkably youthful and bright. Impeccable balance; medium weight and polished with the tannins mostly resolved and bright acids beneath, still showing plenty of intensity and power but with the finesse and understatement of a mature wine.

A HDH purchase - this was in impeccable condition with the fill at the base of the neck. The fruit is remarkably vibrant and bright here - a core of fresh berries and currant fruit framed by cedar, tobacco, and more savoury developed earthy notes. This seems to be at peak - the tannin's fully resolved, but there's still plenty of bright acidity beneath giving it lift, and this keeps getting more complex and fragrant with air. Fantastic wine. Does anyone still make Cabernet like this in California?
