2001 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese

Another rockstar showing from an '01 Meulenhof. Thanks, Patrick, for bringing this from Colorado. Still feels remarkably youthful with lots of bright peach, red apple and citrus fruit flavours tinged with honey, spices, slate, and fainter smoky and creamy notes that emerge with more air. There's lots of sweetness here still, but it's incredibly well balanced by its acidity, and finishes very long. Fantastic wine, and one of my favorite of the night along with the Zilliken.

Another great bottle of this, thanks Dale. As good as I remember, bright citrus, apple and peachy fruit accented with smoke, herbs, and a slatey mineral base beneath. Moderate sweetness (less than most Kabinett) balanced by vibrant acidity, just a fantastic Auslese.

Seems to be heat damaged. Dark in colour, and showing strange caramel and vinyl notes on the nose, with a very hollow palate.

Very pretty, a touch lean and thin at first, but it fills out and broadens on the palate with some air to show lots of green and black olive notes, red fruits and gentle meaty and underbrush accents around the fruit. The tannin here feels fully integrated, and most of the structure comes from the acidity, which keeps it very fresh and lively.

Very pretty, understated and graceful with gentle red and dark fruited flavours tinged with dusty earthy notes, herbs, and tobacco. Flavours slowly build and get more complex with air, and this is lovely to follow over a few hours.

Served blind by Dale, and a real shock when unveiled. Lots of bright red fruits framed by more savoury developed earthy and leathery notes, and a whiff of VA on the nose that had me guessing Musar initially. Bright acids beneath and light tannins make it very easy to drink, this is a treat. Lovely.

Last of my bottles, and drinking superbly. Bright Mosel orchard fruit, slate, savoury earthy and herbal notes, and more mature smokiness coming together very seamlessly on the nose and palate with bright acids beneath. Great balance and length.

2006 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett

Kabinett, yeah, right. Drinks more like a very ripe Spätlese with plenty of ripe peachy and faint tropical fruit tinged with limes, and more savoury burnished and honeyed notes. Lots of depth here, a creamy, polished texture on the palate, and good length. Like this a lot, though it doesn't have the sheer lightness and sense of finesse that Egon's wines usually do.

Much better than my last bottle, but still this never really hit the heights of the 2010 for me. Lots of bright red and dark berried fruit tinged with earth and high toned spiciness, and a very polished, graceful palate presence. Very nice.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): Mark and Dale said this is a dead ringer for a great Burgundy - they weren't kidding. Incredibly pretty, fresh red fruited flavours accented with sweeter floral and earthy notes, and fainter tobacco and herbal notes emerging with more air. The palate presence is remarkably light and graceful and there's a sense of calm and transparency to the flavours here. Stunning wine, with a finish that just resonates long after each sip.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): My first time drinking a '47 - this is a treat. Astonishingly ripe, potent aromatics showing lots of ripe red fruits, cherry liqueur, sweet floral and tobacco elements, and a faint porty, VA-like note. In contrast to the nose, the palate feels amazingly delicate and graceful, with lots of bright red and dark fruited flavours up front that turn more savoury and earthy on the back end, while not showing that liqueur/port-like character the nose suggests. There's remarkable acidity here that keeps it very light on its feet, and it finishes with good length. What an experience - thanks Josh.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): I'm amazed at how young this still seems. Lots of rich, dark berried fruit that has a youthful sappiness to it, framed by cedar, foresty herbal and earthy notes, and tobacco. Feels surprisingly intense and rich on the palate when poured after the '70 Bordeaux, but really lovely.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): What a treat to have this twice in a couple of weeks. The bottle Jay opened earlier this month was stunning, and this was somehow a step up from that. Absolutely intoxicating, haunting aromatics with an array of fresh red fruits, flowers, cedar, and more savoury tobacco, earthy and truffled notes all coming together into an amazing scent. The complexity on the palate echoes the aromatics, and it has an incredibly light, graceful palate presence - flavour conveyed with barely any sense of weight. Absolutely spectacular wine, and my favourite of the night.

So flamboyant on the nose, with sweet sandalwood, floral, and other exotic spicy notes framing a core of rich red fruits and more savoury earthy elements. Still rather primary, but much more appealing to drink right now than the '95 GPL was, with the tannins feeling more silky.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): Really glad I have a couple of bottles of this in the cellar, but based on this showing I won't need to touch them for a decade or two at least. This still seems very primary, with lots of dense, youthful dark fruited flavours tinged with graphite and cedar wood, and a lot of tannin clamping down on the back end. It eases up a little with air and becomes more fragrant, but right now it's more about potential.

Carnitas night (My place): By the standards of most Auslese this would be fantastic, though it's a minor disappointment for a Grünhaus single fuder bottling. Lots of ripe, youthful orchard fruit tinged with faint creamy notes, smoke, and some faint herbal notes, albeit missing that overt pine cone or forestal von Schubert signature. It's very tasty, though feels a bit soft on the palate and leaves me wanting just a bit more cut and focus.
