Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/24/2015 - pmarlo Likes this wine: 93 points

Nice cork pull, stained just on the bottom, no infiltration, but ugh...the first sip was incredibly tannic. If I was a novice I would have poured this down the drain. But the key word is patience. this wince changed so much dung the time I opened it and pure into the glass. First thing it did was to lose all the tannic harshness, then the fruit came forwards and I became a beautiful and balanced wine. I feel this wine on the tip of the tongue and in the back of the throat. It's potent at 16+%. The reason I opened is CT indicated this only had one more year of life left. I don't think that's true but I can see why; the alcohol is high. This is not a PNP by no means. This wine needs time but I think it's at a good place right now given the fact that it took less that 1-2 hours to come around. I have more left in a corked bottle that I will taste tomorrow and I'm expecting it will be even smoother still. I can't place it as to where it might come from like I can with other regions, and that wasn't the case with my previous Delectus samplings. Those had a silkiness to them while this is balanced now

2007 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block

Russian River Valley more

5/4/2015 - pmarlo Likes this wine: 93 points

Solid pull on cork, very dense yet the additional age has rounded this wine. There is a greater balance between the fruit and tannins, with other denser elements emerging. This may seem odd, but it felt thick without really being thick or mouth coating. This time around, wine was more about meat and earth and secondary flavors.I think Carlisle along with Tensley may be some of the better mid level Syrahs being produced today. I think this wine was just about in a perfect place tonight and could probably hold onto this level for 2-3 years more. Recommended.

softish cork but kept it's integrity beautifully. Cork stained almost black. Still tannic and takes it's time to open up. A superb steak wine as it will cut through the fat and grease like a hot knife through butter, and soft butter at that. Deep dark color, and very smooth, and powerfully alcoholic, but you won't know it until you stand up to go to the bathroom. Very nice Toro offering. As smooth as it is a lot of interesting flavors. Recommended. Was surprised CT has this 2004 to 2025 but with these tannins still in circulation, can see it. Recommended and has a good 5 years of life left, if not more. Fruit did begin to emerge but it will take it's time. See why other drinkers are giving it a good decant and the 1 day rest might not be a bad thing. I say drink some one day one but save a good bit for day two. Last glass had good chunk of sediment too.

Brought to a BYOW restaurant for anniversary dinner. Beautiful ruby color, I mean almost glowing. Massively heavy bottle. Was muted at first and seems restrained. But as the night went on the fruit began to creep out. And it is this later stage which I am rating higher. Very well balanced. Nothing out of place with alcohol, fruit, and restrained oak. The suit began to intensify and would have keep on doing so and I would have most certainly rated it even high still..but by that time we had a dead soldier. This was my first HSS and I had high expectations given all the ratings here, but I can see that the right way to have this wine is to let it breath and plenty. I was somehow expecting a profoundly fruity wine but what I got was really well balanced wine, which I wished I could have had more of. Recommended.

2008 Martinelli Chardonnay Zio Tony Ranch

Poured thru Vinturi. Nice pop on cork and good integrity. Yellow green color. This wine reminded me of a cross between a Lewis Chard and a Dumol, both which I like. Lewis because of the intense chardonnay profile. It had the same powerful flavor profile of the grape but dialed down to about a 5 or six. Dumol because of the balance and smoothness after the first sip died down. There was a spiciness to the finish that could have ben due to oak but I wouldn't lay wager on it. The more I swished this around on the palate the more this intensified. Very nice Chard all told. A Lewis Chard in my experience has a very intense Chard flavor that almost come off as biting, and this Martinelli quite reminded me of it, the difference being it would back off to a respectable balance. Second day and that bite died down quite a bit and what was left was a bit flat. Would I buy again? Yes I would. I was impressed as it took the best of both the Lewis and the Dumol and delivered a pleasing wine. CT shows this tops 2016 and it seems very nice right now, so this one might be right on the nose.

Not certain if this variety is my cup of tea. Other Ct users commented on how like a Cabernet it is; I initially didn't see that but after a day in bottle I agree. In fact, a fellow taster indicated it tasted like formaldehyde, although in fairness I didn't get that. It has nice acidity and a dark fruit profile, and i think it is an ager as a result. I am willing to try this one again. This wine is really deeply purple, almost black.

Wine was very good and i stick by my first tasting in 2010, if share makes this quality wine at this level, can't wait to try their Hillside Select. Fruit present and nice thickness to this Syrah. Fruit has not lost a step. The Cab/Syrah blend is done well by them.

2004 De Lisio Grenache

McLaren Vale more

2/22/2015 - pmarlo Likes this wine: 94 points

CT shows 1 year past end age. Cork top moldy and could not extract with the WE auto cork extractor. Infiltrated almost to the top but got the cork out with hand held corkscrew. Bricking evident in rim. Fruit muted but wine is still good and did not sour. Nose also muted and wine is soft and evident past prime.
This wine was sleeping! Now about a good hour in the Grenache profile has emerged. Bright and fruity. This wine is not done. If you have one don't give up on it but give it a good 1-2 hours to come out to play. Legs run fast firts wave, then slow down considerably. It's got about 3-5 years left if the cork holds up. I would enjoy it now. Interesting that most users report issue with the cork. Please please give this wine some time to open up and you will not be disappointed.

This cork is stained almost the same dark magenta hue as a Altamura cab. Was also very decent but again these Kosta's take time to open up, so be patient. Denser style of pinot and great mouthfeel like none others encountered.

Very decent wine, my first Altamura. Not dense but well balanced, more like Bordeaux. Wasn't great right out of the bottle but steadily improved. Recommended but needs time either in cellar or if opened in glass, couple hours.

2005 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

3/15/2015 - pmarlo Likes this wine: 93 points

Cork pulled fabulously, totally intact, not infiltration, and was well made, a plus for me. Cork deeply stained dark purple. Fruit was not prominent but somewhat faed yet this wine has developed secondary flavors most nicely. It is more silky and nuanced and makes one strive to identify the flavors. It's not rich but distinctive just the same. I think this is a characteristic of mountain grown cab and also specifically Spring Mountain. Tannins aren't apparent at first mouthful but if you swish in mount you'll feel their drying effect, so they are still present, just well integrated. The denseness encountered in 2010 has evolved into these nuances and that is why i gave it a point higher than previously. I don't think this will improve so I recommend drinking up. A nice wine.

3/9/15-Didn't make my last one out to 5 years more like I said, but no regrets. Cork fell completely apart and if it wasn't for the fine screen of the venture, I'd be pooping cork. But nothing wrong with this wine. Confused a fellow taster and I as we thought there was grapefruit flavors. But after a bit decided this was indeed pepper. Fruit was nice and on the softer side but not at all faded. Really nice syrah, one i think should be on the short list of best in Cali. Age has made the balance almost perfect. Fruit and alcohol and tannins all seemed about as good as one could hope for. Has that nice syrah bitterness on the back and side of tongue. and on the third day it rose again. Fruit hasn't faded nor have any off flavors showed up. This is the kind of wine that makes one ask why am I not buying more of this producer? Recommended and even though CT says past it's prime a year ago, this one was decent and may be able to make it another 2-5 years. But I think it is ready and well developed now.

My second bottle. Cork was 3/4 infiltrated but still held up. bouquet was okay and fruity. A soft to medium wine which seemed to lack the depth of fruit I've come to enjoy from Chianti. As I consumed this in one setting I can't speak if a day in the bottle would bring forward the fruit. But I think there are better wines at this price point out there. Just average and I wouldn't try it again.

My second bottle. The wine had a great cork which I appreciate. Legs ran slow and fat. On the first day it was very decent with some tannins but nothing over the top. The fruit was present but subdued. I would describe it as a medium bodied wine a bit on the soft side. But the second day the fruit was dominant. I upped my score two points as a result. Very succulent taste. CT users indicate drink now, but based on the fact that the wine emerged more in the second day, I think this could go up to 5 more years.

Good solid pull, mice wine. Noticed that when I had a sip of this and a Cheeto galena puff, the burn increased. Legs ran slow and fat, deep ruby to maroon. No hard edges but felt the 15% when I got up, good balance, tannins in check and smooth. Was ready and may have gone another year or two. Would buy this again. Recommended.

2010 Sybille Kuntz Riesling Gold-Quadrat Trocken

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

1/17/2015 - pmarlo Likes this wine: 92 points

This was everything I want from a good Riesling...when first opened. Light lemon color, very nice acidity. for the life of me I could not place the main fruit component; it could have been pear, apricot, grapefruit, or a mixture, but it went well with the general composition of this wine. It made me want to drink glass after glass. But oddly and about after a hour or two, the wine went completely dumb. I sense it faded. As a result, if you are going to open this wine, consume it right away. CT notes suggest aging should run to 2031. My sense is this is no where accurate and this wine should be consumed while young. But I could be wrong, if the dumb phase the wine went in when opened is a true indicator that I can age. My experience is usually the opposite; a wine is closed open opening but opens gradually when in glass and exposed to air. I rate it according to the first glass taste, and it did everything I could ask from a Riesling.

11/27/14 Thanksgiving. Burgundy colored, medium density, good pull, used the WE auto extractor, a fun tool, recommend it. Tears stay way high up in glass and run really slow. Interesting. Might have been a bit early for this one, as it seems a bit weak. But there is a sharp tang in this of acid. Waiting to see if it is still opening up. Feels like it wants to emerge but if so, taking it's time. Yet this tastes more like the pure grape than extraction. A bit astringent on the front of the tongue. Medium bodied. Right now, not one of my favorite vintages, and that's a surprise, as 2010 was supposed to be a decent year. At this point I would rate it a 88. But by the time I had my last glass at 7 hours, the pinot was right on. Conclusion: this wine was not ready at 4 years. Judging by the time it took to fully emerge-and it was by far the longest I have had to wait for a pinot in the glass to do so-a 3-5 year rest would not be out of the question. There seems to be enough material to develop and I take that as a good sign.

After I had my first bottle,I thought the rating was on the high side. I don't anymore. This is a decent wine that requires air to emerge fully. First sip was a bit mutes and I think that might be due to the syrah offsetting the brightness of the grenache. It took every bit of three hours for the grenache to outdistance the syrah, and when it did the fruit was there. Enjoyed this wine quite a bit and savored each sip. I think it can go for five more years and drink perfect out of the bottle them. Recommended.

A gorgeous wine. Cork snapped in half but was able to extract the plug and the wine was fine. Garnet colored and brilliantly so when held to the light. this wine has come together beautifully and was drinking well right from the go. Fruit was abundant and had not faded in this 12 year old. Tannins have integrated and are softened nicely. Perfect balance to this wine. There is a flavor here that I can't quite place and that seems unexpected but this doesn't detract. Bouquet is slight. Really nice wine, and some brightness to the finish. This is ready now but I think it might last a good five years. Second night the wine softened a bit but also the fruit seemed a bit sharper. Sounds like opposites but this is what it seems like. CT users show to 2020. Recommended.
