I bought this to cook with, as I wanted a high quality madeira for special dishes, but it was very good on its own. First madeira ever had, wasn't sure what i was expecting, was a cross between brandy and a wine with slightly sweet profile. I would buy this again in a heart beat and yes I will continue cooking with it even though there are less expensive options.

4/5/15 Easter sunday-Nice pull from cork and no infiltration. Reminded me somewhat of a cross between Sea Smoke and Kosta Browne, not a bad mash up. Very good, well balanced wine. Kept developing. Have a glass left in bottle I will try tomorrow. I got this for half price and it was a steal. Quality was very good. Recommended and I would buy again. 93.

5/12/12-SATURDAY MOTHERS DAY. CORK DEEP PURPLE, DRY BUT VERY GOOD. BOUQUET OFF AT FIRST. POURED THOUGH VINTURI. FELT LIKE THE CORK HAD SOMEHOW IMPARTED A FLAVOR TO THIS WINE BUT AS MORE CONSUMED AND TIME IN GLASS, THIS DISSIPATED. NOT THE BEHEAMOTH I WAS ANTICIPATING, NICE BALANCE, SMOOTH. WHAT IS THE ALCOHOL PERCENT ON THIS AND I AM BUZZED?

Based on my poor cork performance for wines 10+ years, expected I would have to sadly pour this down the sink. Gladly I didn't have too. However, the cork disintegrated while extracting, leaving only the bottom stub somewhat enact, the rest crumbled like blue cheese. But no infiltration. Legs run quick first wave, then big fat tears ran slow. Must also be very fine sediment present as glass became stained later on, perhaps halfway through the bottle. Very slight bouquet upon opening, pour through Vinturi and the filter helped. Dirty purple in color. In glass wine lighter at rim. first sip was enough to tell me it was still good. Muted flavors but the essence of the cabernet grape and musty taste and I thought it was fruit faded and past it's prime. However, the longer it remained in the glass the more the fruit came out. That took over the course of the evening until the fruit was more then apple. Got that mountain fruit profile which is hard for me to explain but unique to Spring Mountain. Fully aged and secondary flavors well developed, very tasty blend. I feel this is completely ready right now, but given it took several hours for the fruit to push forward, if you have been storing bottles in ideal condition, i think it could go just a few years more. a pleasant surprise and well related, recommended.

Dreaded opening as I feared the cork would disintegrate. It didn't. Very narrow cork but held up well, no infiltration, cork stained deep purple, almost black. The wine is absolutely ready now. Fruit apparent from first sip, and no alcohol detected. Faded somewhat quickly so a short finish. Not a fruit club over the head yet very pleasant and wonderfully developed by the age now of 13 years. Secondary and tertiary flavors present but couldn't tell you if leather, tobacco, or forest. somehow a bit of each. Some fading at the rim of glass which showed the aging. Fruit did become more prominent with more air. Think this should be consumed now but if you have ideal conditions the wine may go about 5 more years, but I don't see any improvement from where it is now. Recommended.

Cork pull decent, no infiltration and held up well. Cork really long too, a plus for me. First sip I could tell this wine was shut down hard, but had a lot of material just waiting to emerge. Fruit was muted. during the evening it began slowly to emerge and intensify. But the second day was absolutely marvelous. Incredible heady bouquet. the most incredible balance in a wine I have ever had. Crystalline pure in the flavors and not silky like say a Stags Leap wine is. Tannins really well behaved and held in check. The best cabernet based wine I have ever had. Have had Shafer HSS, Altamura, Dominus, Merus, Paul Hobbs and others and this one has topped them. Profound wine. As it took a full day to emerge, I think aging can continue for a good 10 years in prime storage conditions. Highly recommended. I like to bring good wines to a BYOW restaurant but I would think twice for this one so only because of the long time it took to fully develop and emerge.

Didn't have the time to really study and let develop, as I took this to Christmas party. One of the most rubbery corks I ever encountered yet it held the wine intact. Was expecting a beast but got a very balanced, medium bodied wine. Feels like this has evolved and integrated compared to other vintages of Merus I've had. Nice balanced taste, tennis not oppressive and in good balance with the remaining fruit. Might be able to go longer but based on my cork experience I am inclined to drink earlier to enjoy both the fruit and integration. Recommended.

Deeply stained cork, solid pull and cork intack and no infiltration, which surprised as cork somewhat on the soft/flexible side. Legs ran abundant and slow. Deep purple color and abundant tennis yet sufficiently developed as to not be astringent. Beautiful fruit profile, very youthful, and delicious in every sip. I like this type of fruit and decent complexity. Seller cautioned me not to drink this too soon, as the terrain which wine was grown very hot and brutal, forcing grapes to develop think skins and hence tannins in order to survive and sparse water pushing roots deep into subsoil. This was really good and i savored every sip. Lots of sediment even after laying wine down for close to 10 years. Recommended. Lots of life left, will try in about 5 years.

A very decent everyday table wine which is ready right now at it's 5 year birthday. Drank well out of the bottle. Composite cork and dirty purple in color. The presence of Syrah toned down the brightness of the ganache and made it both hard to tell which was the more dominant; in other words a nice blend. Had with steak and was sufficiently strong to cleanse the palate of grease. Fruit dominant wine and about medium bodied. This is ready now and among the better values for a good everyday table wine not just in price but in quality.

About the right time to drink because sliding past it's prime. Cork infiltrated to about half but still intact and with a light fuchsia stain. Soft purple color, guest detected chalky favor. Nose present but a bit muted. Fruit was cherry or blackberry and soft but well developed. Time in glass intensified fruit and didn't take long for it to be at it's best, which I credit to the extended aging. No need to hold these. Was overall pleasant and well balanced between the tang of the remaining acidity and the softened fruit.

Cork was impacted and broke in half but not due to infiltration. Deep dirty purple wine, moderately fragrant bouquet. First sip was powerful in alcohol. Fruit was still present and medium bodied. Dense wine. Glass staining purple and left streaks on glass. Also changed the next day and somehow got 'sweeter?" Can't quite describe this. Was a pleasant surprise to see that it lasted close to 10 years. Very fine sediment in last glass but I think it was present throughout. I think the Pax syrahs might be a good buy at this mid level price.

Very decent wine, burgundy in color, unique flavor, medium bodied. Changed with air as last glass the fruit was coming forth. some odd smells that I could not place, not medicinal, but out of the ordinary, but was a nice profile and didn't detract. Liked this like a Mas Donis Capcanes but quite different but both wonderful values. Would get this again. Think this will take another 5 years of age and would be interested to see how it developed. Recommended.

Again, the wine did not show as well on day one as the next. First day the fruit was muted and although it was decent did not reveal the potential. Next day more of the grenache flavors emerged. I kept wanting the fruit to be mor intense but it hung back. Still one of my favorite table wines that would be a treat to have with a restaurant meal or at home. Recommended. Wondering how the 2013 are? they may be as good or even better.

Very nice style of Washington Cab. Not as heavily fruit laden as some California cabs and was a nice change. A soft elegance to this one. But make no mistake, the cab profile and nose is there. Legs took awhile to begin running but once started they ran medium. Nice dark magenta color. Was very decent for the price. Recommended.

This wine was a hard one to figure out. Very muted flavors yet there was a density lurking that seemed to want to emerge. Also, One of the most grape residue laden wines I have ever had, practically residue in every glass, and no screen available to filter it out. Yet I did like it. Had remainder next day and felt that the flavor was just beginning to come out. either this was not a fruit based wine or it just takes a long time to emerge. Given the history of this wine, will try another in about 5 years to determine if age was all that was needed.

The last time I had this was in 2010 and I thought it was one of the better pinots I ever had. Five years later, I can stand once again behind that statement. The fruit was just perfect and succulent to the palate. When I first opened this bottle the bouquet was evident several feet away. The flavors seemed like either cherry or raspberry or a mixture of both, and were just potent. Tannins were just a tad present. This wine has improved since my 2010 tasting. Dumol pinots in strong vintages are some of the best to be had. Highly recommended and still at the appellation level one of the best pints I've ever had, and i said that back in 2010

Good pull on 10 year old cork and integrity good, no degradation. Very soft wine, could barely tell where the fruit was. Acidity more prominent. Cherry flavor also. Wasn't impressed and disappointed that this didn't live up to the hype. But the next day it got a lot better, exponentially so. Very polished wine now, fruit has emerged, wonderful balance. This wine has a lot of life left. Drinking now you will need a good day decant. These French 2005 wines have a lot of guts and require time.

9/5-7/15-I had a lot of trepidation in opening this wine. I bought it at a supermarket, perhaps ten years ago, it's been stored cool but not perfect, and it's 18 years old. The cork broke in half but I was able to extract the remainder with minimal cork falling into the wine. Would it still be good?
You bet! The wine had a brick color but was still viable and hadn't corked. The balance was superb, close to a Ridge Monte Bellow 2001,even though the Beringer is 100% cab. The tannins are all but resolved. This is how I expect a well aged wine to evolve into, a well balanced, instant gratification experience. But after I left the balance in the bottle for TWO days, the fruit became insanely good and came to the front. I initially thought during the first day of tasting that due to its age the fruit had settled back, but it is still there. The bottle was stored on its side and I see a layer of sediment practically etched into the bottle. This is a tribute to fine winemaking, and i know this wine could go even farther for aging, but I would be afraid to say how much longer. I want to say another ten years but that might be overly optimistic, but based on what I tasted over a three day period, I don't think it's out of the question.

This is more like the Sea Smoke I first was drawn to. Very nice fruit, cherry/raspberry flavor, but deep flavors and a semi-bitter finish. Tannins are present when the wine is swished in the mouth but restrained. Took about a good hour or more to really begin to show the deeper fruit. Enough structure of fruit and tannins to age more, but not sure about the acidity, as it was not overly bright. but this is drinking well now but requires some time in the glass. Recommended and will age up to 5 years more, but i have been surprised at how long the wines can age, going longer.

Enjoyed at outdoor symphonic concert. Last time had in 2012 and said would try next in 5 years but only made it three more, but feel it was the right time. Again, horrid cork that required the fine screen of a Vinturi, but wine was intact and not compromised. Deep golden color and wonderful pear flavor but has softened a bit from last tasting, at same time picking up a bit more mineral. This time the sweetness was very refined and mellow and not at all cloying. Each sip savored, an indication of a good wine. Finish lasted good half minute or more. I think it could go several years more but if not stored in optimum conditions, expect the cork to fall apart when opening.
