2010 Kanzler Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Creamy strawberry delight, balanced by vibrant acid, great length. Some intriguing greenness too, maybe celery. Earth. A strong showing by the Kanzler farm for sure. I could see aging another several years, but the alcohol level is concerning. There is a burn on the finish.

Love this wine. It's still drinking very well, and the $14 price still warms my heart. Vibrant and fruity, good acidity and body. Some green notes. Holds up to food without a flinch, drinks well on its own. Stelvin cap, which likely won't need to be re-employed.

Intense and concentrated. Dark, brooding fruit, earth, spice, menthol, tartness. Vegetable hints, medium tannins. Complex and brooding. A big, excellent steak wine with good length. Plenty of life left.

Mighty fine, honest Grenache that's awfully food-friendly. Rich intensity on the nose, followed by supreme balance, minerality, gentle fruit, spice, a touch of earth, length. Drinking very well now.

Classic traits of Sauv Blanc. Lush nose, flavors of grass and grapefruit, intense acid. Medium body and good intensity; medium to long finish. Kermit Lynch strikes again.

Perplexing wine. Rich oaky sweet odor says OAK before it hits the lips. Uh-oh. On the palate it’s disjointed, like it’s falling apart. Surprisingly acidic, with a bitter element that throws off the taste buds, lots of oak (probably too much), kind of over-rich. Highly extracted, it feels less Wash than Cali, and there’s a distinct alcoholic burn on the finish as the fruit fades precipitously. Glancing at the bottle, it indicates 14.8% ABV though I’d guess higher. This is no surprise judging from how poorly it’s aging. An imbalanced, disappointing pour for the money.

Fortitude is the word I think of. Petrol nose, dry with great acidity that burns through til the end. Mineral, apple and is that creaminess upon opening? White pepper spice too. Impeccable balance, a formidable Riesling.

Petrol fruit nose. Gorgeous wine with impeccable balance, part peach, citrus, some petrol and loads of rocky backing. Clean, mineral, richness. Crisp as heck.

This bottle is a little over-sweet, less balanced by the acid I found in previous bottles. Stinky petrol, honey, apple. Good length.

Indulgent and thoroughly enjoyable. Extracted but not flabby, rather concentrated, chock full of blue and black fruit. Spice, tannin, light oak. Dusty and subtly acidic. No overthinking required.

Fascinating wine, and a very strong bargain in PA at $12.99. Richly colored, lots of smoke and tar, green pepper, coffee, dark fruits (esp. blackberry). Bright acidity. I think a very good wine and deserving of high marks at this price.

From the list at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa (a steal at $115!). Vibrant and with its full wits about it. It's the acidity that makes this wine exciting and vital -- it only improved in the glass over the course of an hour-plus. Earth, leather, tart red fruit and metallic-blood. Herbal and savory. Slightly bricked but the color has held and the bouquet is full. Fully intact and glorious.

Several hours of decanting required. Earthy red tart fruit. A little hollow from mid on, lacking stuffing. Oak influence. Feels like potential but comes forth lightly. That was day one. Two days later, the wine actually came together in a much more organized way. The oak is still strong but the fruit is emboldened and the finish has lengthened. Acid comes through more prominently. Curious wine that I ultimately came to like as much as the wine I'd sampled in the winery's tasting room.

Brambly, slightly charred oak nose. It becomes subtly herbaceous, too, which carries onto the palate. Big bodied and bold, with richness that sidesteps overbearing and a quality of fruit that isn’t a mark for over-extraction. Stinging acidity, too. Balanced juice that comes through lean and energetic. There’s charcoal and earth, dark dark and reddish fruit and spice. Great bargain in PA at $15. More: http://pavineco.com/burgess-syrah-2009/

Refreshing and balanced, with a little spritz. A refreshing quaff with strawberry essence, roses. Made entirely from Cab Franc grapes which imparts some body, along with what I'd guess is a short oak stint. Sharp acidic bite. Good with food or on its own. 12.2%.

Lovely viscous mouth feel as well as a solid notion of stink and sea. Bracing and clean with ample limestone at the bottom, there’s a wonderful early insistence of juicy tropical fruit that in turn defers to the wine’s saline minerality. With decanting, and especially on the second day, it settles more into itself, broadens and takes on pear flavors. I also found the air to draw out more intensity on the finish and some low heat. Upon first opening, a smoky Cab flavor, under the influence of Carmenere or maybe Malbec? Definitely new world. Shallow, closed down on the first night despite hours in open air. Earth, acidity, West Coast Cab nose in spades. Green shading, bell pepper and short finish. With more time, takes on simpler flavors -- it basically becomes a Cali Cab. Not what I look for in a BDX.

It took me a couple sittings to taste this properly, that is, to draw the proper qualities from it. Hearty, earthy stuff with lovely dark cherry fruit, light spice, herbs, maybe a little tobacco. For 10 bucks, a great bottle.

No notes but my WOTN at a BYO in Philly. My compadres leaned more toward a big Washington state red blend that reeked of vanilla oak, but I found the A-F to be much truer, slightly tart red and lengthy. More European, thoroughly enjoyable.

Lengthy, expressive, spicy...yes, plenty going on. For 19 bucks here in PA, a good opportunity to try a white CdP, and it delivers. Love the nose: I get some pineapple and spices. Good bite/acidity. Very pleasing.
