2001 Château du Tertre

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/21/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 points

The last of my 01s and the best, this is an excellent example of Du Tertre. The 00 has greater depth and body, so will overhaul the 01 in the future, but for now this is actually drinking better. It has developed notes of red cherry on the nose and palate, but the most noticeable change is the elegance, much more pronounced than before. Of course this also denotes the start of the decline and there are faint signs of it already, but it should still remain excellent for another two or three years. Highly recommended.

2004 Château La Vieille Cure

Fronsac Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/19/2015 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: NR

No score because it wouldn't be fair. I'm normally a fan of VC but this is to my taste completely OTT. Syrupy, with alcohol tasting higher than the 13,5° announced, sweet fruit but right in your face, all the subtlety of a flying fruitbomb on steroids. I finished one glass with difficulty. I have another bottle which I'll try in 2 years time - who knows? It's certainly quite youthful.

2004 Couly-Dutheil Chinon Cuvée Crescendo Clos de l'Echo

Cabernet Franc more

6/18/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

This could get better still. Much more body and depth than Clos de L'Echo, although I could have done with less obvious oak, but maybe time will improve that aspect. Red cherry and graphite, with a lot of vanilla from the oak, quite Pomerol like with hints of violet and plum. Probably needs another 2 years.

2000 Château Cantemerle

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/18/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 points

Slightly better than previous bottles, this has developed into a charming wine, if somewhat one-dimensional, so possibly worth a punt at the right price.

2004 Château Montus Madiran

Tannat Blend, Tannat more

6/7/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Very impressive. Still with a fair amount of baby fat, the fruit hasn't developed fully, but there's plenty of it and the future is promising. For the time being, a ripe, rich mouthful of blackberry, redcurrant and liquorice with an intense finish.

2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)

Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/31/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

Very enjoyable and at the moment, better than the 00. Cigar box and blackcurrant aromas, then the usual slightly spicy blackcurrant and cherry flavours, with good grip and structure. Just lacks that mid-palate sparkle of the great vintages, otherwise excellent.

2005 Château Lestage

Listrac-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/29/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 87 points

Still a bit tannic but easily the best Lestage ever tasted, with big, brooding waves of cherry and blackcurrant, deep and long. The finale is a little clumsy but compared to the rustic wines of the past, this is a revelation and excellent value. My score is probably conservative.

Heady and almost a touch of the syrupy, but there's enough body to cope with the high octane flavours of the vintage. Excellent value

2011 Château Larose-Trintaudon

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/22/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 88 points

As usual, a good, solid performance, with typical elegance and finesse. The fruit veers from blackberry to red cherry, with a little kirsch flavour on top. It's a little thin and high-pitched, but I'm quibbling. Probably better in another year but not for the long haul.

2001 Château Dauzac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/19/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Much better than the last bottle, this was splendid, with sweet scents of cherry and violet and a mouthful of jammified fruit, offset by Margaux elegance and a crisp finish. No sign of decay, this tasted fresh and vibrant.

Very fragrant with strong, clear aromas of raspberry and blackcurrant. Much the same in the mouth, very fruity and refreshing. No great complexity but a good drink.

2005 Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/11/2015 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: 82 points

Better than last year's but still a surprisingly weak effort. The red cherry is quite appealing, but there's no complexity and really no prospect of any in the future. One-dimensional, good for uncritical quaffing, but this sells for a fairly high price, so serviceable, but there are better wines for far less.

2003 Château Camensac

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/11/2015 - Julian Marshall wrote: 83 points

Better than the last bottle, it even began quite well, with reasonably fresh tastes of spicy blackberry, so my taste-buds perked up in anticipation of a nice surprise, but sadly this wasn't to be. The middle section tails off into a short, dry finish. I suppose for 10€ there are worse bottles and we did at least finish it, but not with any great pleasure.

2009 Château Lieujean

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/3/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 87 points

Slightly more mature than last August, but should be better in another year. Promising, I like the feel of the blackcurrant, which is full of zeal and zest, but the lack of a backbone will become problematic so not for the long haul.

1996 Château Brane-Cantenac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/28/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 96 points

Whoever said that modern Bordeaux couldn't age well? Admittedly this isn't exactly a typical example, in that it could hardly be less classic in style and structure. The last time I tried one was in 2013 and like its predecessors, the bottle was still suffering from a harsh, cold tannic streak which brought back vague memories of various 1975s, so I wondered whether or not it would ever come good.

It has. The bouquet is still rich and creamy with notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, offset by cedar. The attack is similarly sweet and inviting, with a fresh, rounded feel to the mid-section but the finish is now silky, long and elegant. Immensely satisfying and pleasurable, a Margaux at the peak of its powers, an outstanding wine. Even better than the 98 I tasted recently, this is certainly the best mature Brane I've had since the 83.

Of course the only problem is the patience needed...sadly my last bottle from a case.

Not bad but I wasn't over-impressed. Tannic at first, which I expected, thankfully not too much oak, but there isn't the depth of fruit I had hoped for. Maybe it'll come out of its shell in another two years.

2002 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/19/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 points

Another vastly underrated 2002. Classic Pauillac aromas of cigar box, cedar, cassis and lead pencil, classic Pauillac tastes of cassis, plum and violet, very suave and velvety, with a long, satisfying finish. This will probably improve further over the next two or three years and hold for another decade.
