2010 Ultramarine Pinot Noir Rosé Heintz Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

Brilliant stuff again from Ultramarine. The wine opens with such a powerful effervescence and spice that sticking one's nose in too early will bring a tear to your eye. Powerful. Loads of cherry and red fruit flavors and a texture that is so wiry, yet also expansive. It coats your entire palate with yeasty flavors and minerals and fruit. The finish just goes on and on and it almost drinks like a meal. I'm guessing that time will bring about even more interesting development as this was just bottled in Feb. Very exciting wine.

2014 Cruse Wine Company Pinot Gris Delfino Vineyards

Sierra Foothills more

5/16/2015 - Decaturwinedude wrote: NR

From Cruse:

This Pinot Gris is from the Delfino vineyard in the Sierra Foothills, just outside of Placerville. A tiny little parcel on pinkish, rocky soils, we only made 77 cases of this wine in 2014.

Fruit was hand harvested and whole cluster pressed without addition of sulfur. After a racking off of juice lees, the wine went through a native fermentation in older barrels. Malolactic fermentation was arrested to preserve acid and the wine was bottled without addition of fining agents.

The Pinot Gris is showing some slight tropical fruit notes on the nose, with a weighty palate. The wine is bone dry, but has a slight impression of sweetness that develops into some exotic spice on the finish.

Vibrant stuff. Exotic, lemon/lime/tart fruit flavors and wiry acidity. There were notes of seashells and I wanted to drink this with oysters (next time). Puckering and cleansing on a hot night in ATL. Fun stuff.

The nose I'm looking for in aged Chinon, green pepper, some leathery, earthy notes. Palate is austere at first, the fruit is less rounded and supple than say the '90 or '89. I thought it might come around with air, but it doesn't really budge. Lean, tart fruit, but otherwise sound.

Having recently been blown away by another '01 Sleepy Hollow, this note is a bit of a comparison on the two. I didn't decant the Pisoni. The wine looks rich with its deeper purple hues that lead to a lush fruit that leans toward blue rather than red. The wine feels loaded and tight. To me, the acidity is a little more hidden than I'd ideally like. The wine feels new world-ish to me, where the Sleepy Hollow could pass as a red Burgundy imo. It's a very good wine, but needs time to unpack and unwind.

Wow. This is a seriously captivating bubbly. Not for the faint of heart. Super energetic and lively acids and tiny bubbles. Smells initially of brioche and hints of sweet caramel notes. Lemon and mineral notes come on. Minerals. Long and powerful now. Drank this with fried oysters. Ah, that worked. Glad to have more. Looking forward to watching what Michael and Co. do with this Ultramarine stuff. Wowzer.

Last of 6 bottles for me... Nose features aged pinot fruit, funky earth tones and ripe fruit. Cool minerals on the palate and a crisp, tart red fruit backed by lively acid. The fruit is ripe, tastes younger than its 19 years. It's riper than it is charming, but it's still drinking great and no signs of fading.

Ripe and young nose, some sous bois starting to show. Low acid, lush and silky fruit coats the palate. Very ripe. Wide open. Warming finish. Never closed down. Drinking now. Very '07.

Terrific showing for a youngish Raffault. Pencil lead, green pepper, earth. Initially, the fruit is ripe and lush, almost new-world-ish, but with time, the wine unfolds and takes on a decidedly more earthy character. But..there is a core of ripe, dark fruit here that keeps things interesting. Funny, in so many Loire Chinons I get the scent of boiled peanuts. I like it. Really, really terrific for a young Raffault if you like the style. Glad to have more to watch develop.

Gah, what an elegant and beautiful showing. Nose shows flowers, cigar box, and wet leaves. Almost a Burgundian nose. Medium weight, soft, supple mouth-feel. Sweet red fruit. Almost sappy, with a wiry, fresh acidity. Integrated and mature, it feels regal and sophisticated, from the nose to the finish. A joy.

30 minute decant....Beginning to come around, though still quite wrapped as Montille Pommards can be. Elegant, floral nose that shows some secondary wet leaves/earth thing. There is terrific energy and freshness to the palate. Red fruit, plums, earth. Very cool. Very long. Almost there. Almost there.

Mostly Roussane with a little Viognier. Almost clear color, with a faint yellowing. It smells like spring flowers and fresh fruit. Elegant and mineral-driven, it's clean and precise with little hints of oak and fig. A rights tasty wine and a nice match with my Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken from Las Brasas. Yum.

Really drinking well now. Crushed berries, with a real bright, juicy strawberry/raspberry fruitiness. But it's not overtly ripe like '09. More minerality here, and some iron/meaty notes. Despite the persistent juicy fruit, it's light on its feet. Easy drinking, but serious, and eminently a mighty tasty glass of wine.

A translucent ruby red. Terrific aromatics. Floral and sweet dark fruit. So lithe and delicate, yet it shows a wee bit of earthy funk along with a sweet/savory element that is light in weight but expressive. INteresting stuff. Never heavy, nothing out of place. My favorite red wine from D & R thus far. Terrific.

Bold aromatics of ripe dark fruit, smoke, and tea. Palate is straight out juicy with waves of crunchy red fruits and lively acids. Seems young and primary right now. A beauty of a Grand Cru in the mAking. Needs time to really reach that mature GC plateau, but kind of fun and hedonistic right now.

Some of the same pretty florals as the '90 from earlier in the week, but this one is green, too. Some red fruit and oak and cedar notes. The finish is the problem as it turns kind of green and falls off a bit. Good. That's it.

Brilliant Cali Pinot that says Burgundy as much as it does Cali. Dark, spicy, perfumed nose that is elegant and beguiling. The red fruit is big and seemingly primary, yet it's weightless and delicate and dances with agility on the palate. So freaking good and seemingly poised to go for still more years...amazing. Thanks Joe.
