2006 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino

Terrific Rosso, if not that great value. Very "true" translucent ruby colour. Great perfumed nose of flowers. On palate its earthy with cherry and high acidity. A great insight into Montalcino and great advertisement for proper winemaking.

Light golden colour. Very fresh and pleasant nose of peach and honey. The palate is a little oily with white peaches and honey. Lively acidity. Very good food wine.

Very nice wine. Not a blockbuster but very classy. Dark ruby colour. Black fruit, including currant, plum with cedar and very slight green herbs. Medium long finish. Overpriced in the cali mailing list model but have to applaud the effort.

I liked this more than the 2004 and 2005. I especially liked that it was better on Day 2. Given the Magrez connection it could have been overdone in the average vintage but instead they seem to have gone with the elegant feminine vintage style that really suits the year. Dark ruby, blackberry and cassis - balanced and pleasant. 2011 is shaping better than expected.

How good is 2009 in bdx? Well you can over-extract and over-oak like these guys did and still make a 91 pt wine as the fruit is so strong. Very dark colour, nose of black fruit and toasty oak, a bit of VA? Plums, blackberry and blueberry on a juicy and round palate - really nice fruit. Medium finish but oaky. Overall just a pity they needed to try that hard in the cellar.

This is quite a restrained and elegant chablis - it needs time to open up and may benefit from another year or two in the bottle. The nose is white flowers and pear. Pear, lemon and distinct minerality make up a very elegant and finessed palate. The finish is medium long. Give it air or time.

Great barbera that still needs time, believe it or not. Intense colour, nose of black fruits. Black cherry and violet on palate with some mushroom and earth. Very nice but maybe the 07 is better?

I rated this down 2 pts from last time as the oak and creaminess bothered me more this time. Otherwise note is as per prior. I think there is a degree of baby fat that will be shed and leave a nice wine so definitely some upside once the new wood is integrated. 90+

a rather unsuccessful vintage for col d'orcia. muted nose. on palate some cherry and earth but none of the complexity and body that you would associate with fine brunello. short-ish finish. at age 13 this is one to give up on now.

Overall black profile to this. Black cherry and blackberry nose. Again black fruits with some liquorice on palate. It is not "soft" but at the same time lacks the structure and minerality of the best vintages. This is a good wine but under the cali direct sale model it is way overpriced at $140.

Dark purple colour. Intense nose of dark cherry and charcoal - great nose. More mixed on palate - good fruit but perhaps still disjointed and needs time. Only a medium finish. Outclassed by the 2005 to be honest at this point. 91+

In the context of other 2009s I'd call this unremarkable, and RP's 93 rating seems high. Dark ruby colour. Nose of black fruit and cedar. Juicy and attractive palate with some earth. Some oak driven flavours as well such as coffee and vanilla. The finish is just OK. No buy at the price for me - much better 2009 value deals out there. eg the batailley kicks this into touch and at a lower price.

Very dark colour. Great intense nose of dark fruit, new oak and lots of smoke - an impeccable modern bordeaux nose. Creamy and elegant on the palate with great fruit and stuffing. This is great QPR albeit a touch modern/oaky but it can hold it.

Dark and warm. It is a wine that is suffering a little right now from the hot vintage and needs time to find balance. Hopefully it will, but my sense is that its more of a gamble than other vintages available.

very good not great is what sprang to mind. the colour is still strong - deep ruby - very youthful appearance. the nose was the first slight disappointment as it was quite muted. Much much better on the palate with soft ripe dark fruit and a touch of smoke and cedar - this seems ready to drink with minimal air . The finish however was just medium (2nd slight disappointment). you have to admire where this sits at age 24, but on balance I believe low 90s is the correct score range.

In my humble view this is a poster child of everything that went wrong with Australian shiraz in the last 10 years. Deep purple colour with an intense and remarkable blackberry nose - i liked the nose. Unfortunately it goes downhill from here as the wine, which is very plummy, is patently over ripe and the alcohol makes it unbalanced. This was picked too late - as per the Robert Parker manual.

deep rich purple colour. Lots of blackberry, blueberry and oak but it comes across as a little wild and unbalanced. Perhaps it will improve with more time but at the price point I wont be looking for another one to test that thesis out. I liked the 2009 better.

small sample tasted at winery in June 2013. Very dark, ink like colour. dense and primary black fruit but not one dimensional with graphite and earth finish and good tannic backbone. I didnt think this was close to RP 100, but the potential in the minerality it showed, pushed me to buy 6 for $840, which in hindsight was an OK move. Interestingly, only 2 out of the 12 in our tasting group thought it was worth buying at that price.

Violet colour. Lots of cedar and charcoal on the nose - more than fruit. Palate is slightly more evolved than I would have guessed with blackcurrant fruit, cedar and tobacco. The charcoal tinged finish is long, very long. Classy wine, though I'm not sure it improves a lot from here.

PnP. More accessible than vigna del gris and sori ginestra. Medium ruby colour. Modern style but in a strong vintage like 2006 it works. Earth, cherry, tar and longish finish with dusty tannins.

This wine bears no resemblance whatsoever to the ones I tasted in 2007 and 2009 (same batch, well stored). sadly I will have to agree with AG that this has not aged well. The explosiveness and vibrancy of the fruit that was there is now gone and while it is still an interesting wine in its more restrained taste (tar and mushroom) it is not at the same level qualitatively as prior. I see no upside in keeping and in fact I wish I had drunk all my remaining a few years ago.
