2011 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

5/25/2015 - wineshaman wrote: 91 points

Blackberry Koolaid, cherry cola, vanilla, a touch of oak, everything is decently balance. Structure, acidity and tannins are nearly non existent, this Caymus like most Caymus's is strongly dependent on fruit for it's definitive current pleasure. Drink soon for the love of the fruit!

Had at Tautogs, Virginia beach, paired with Rock Fish, Mussels, She Crab Soup and crab imperial, this was a very nice match. This SB had a nice mixture of citrus, tropical fruits, and minerals, price fairly @$20.

Huge blackberry koolaid, very rich , ripe, low acidity. With all due respect to the previous taster, from my 3+ decades of experience of tasting and collecting, IMHO this is ready to drink sooner than later. Drink over the next 5 years!

2009 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

All the usual Caymus traits, sweet, dark, rich, extracted, etc. paired perfectly with BBQ beef brisket from Deep Run Roadhouse ( the best brisket I have ever had) the smokiness of the meat and the richness of the Caymus was a marriage made in heaven. Yum!

Nothing wrong with this blend, just a bit underwhelming given the vintage and the pedigree. Drank this bottle over 2 days, smooth, elegant wine by California standards, plenty of unusual blue & black fruits, structure and balance seem to be there for short term cellaring.

Not bad, a little on the oaky side, more like Chardonnay than a PG, lacks crispness , still has lemon, grapfruit, residual sugar seems to cover the flaws. For me this lacks the dryness & crisp finish I look for in this varietal.

2012 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot

Napa Valley more

5/10/2015 - wineshaman wrote: 89 points

Dan Duckhorn cut his teeth on merlot, this effort given the reputation of the 2012 was a bit underwelming, nothing wrong with it, just lacks the concentration and richness I was expecting. Innocuous flavors of dark cherry, currants, tobacco, olives, some spice on the finish, soft tannins that seemed close to being fully integrated.

Grassy, herbaceous, kiwi nose, lMHO compared to privious vintages this bottle had just hint of grapefruit, though lemon was present, there was also kiwi and a little watermelon on the finish, plenty crisp and fresh.

Update from last night, fresh palate and consciousness 24 hrs has not been favorable. The nose is full of anise, licorice & over ripe plum, this is annoying. The palate is certainly modern and more fullfilling than the nose, with plenty of juicy, dark fruits, jammy, ripe, extracted in that new world style. Tannins are fully integrated, if I was to rate this 1/3 bottle I would give it an 88, I was hoping for more, given the vintage and the pedigree!

For me there was just too much new oak, don't know the breakdown? On the plus side there was enough Chardonnay characteristics to make this palatable, with lemon, lime, kiwi, nice minerals just a touch of butter and firm acidity. Maybe the oak will integrate with time, I was expecting more from this vintage!

Opened this late last night after several glasses of Lytton springs still have a 1/3 of a bottle left with the cork in it and will consume tonight. I remember this being quite rich, concentrated, extracted, jucey, made in a modern style 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Looking forward to re- tasting and updating these notes but for now I will go with a 92!
