2/26/2024 - toebel wrote: 79 pointsTerribly disappointing. Ridiculously dilute, uninteresting. On the nose Slight, muted floral notes. Almost no fruit at all, limited acidity. It honestly tastes like someone took a mediocre cab and then diluted it in half with tap water. One of worst qprs in a long time. |

7/29/2022 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsAbsolutely fantastic for the price point. One of those wines that you want to keep coming back to throughout the night to see how it evolves. Great structure to compliment the herry and deep red/purple plum flavors with spice undertones and the Long finish. Very savory, great nose and nice fruit. Classic Nuits St. George that drinks ike a solid premier cru at a minimum. Hoping to find more. |

7/26/2022 - toebel Likes this wine: 95 pointsBest young barolo I've tasted. Thoughtfully chosen by the owner and wine purveyor of Solare restaurant to compliment the osso bucco and saffron rosoto that evening. It paired beautifully. For a young barolo (2 year released) it was integrated and seamless. Darker, rich fruits as well as cherry with softer tannins than i would have imagined for the age. I was glad to purchase one more for $85. Interested in comparing it with the 16 Damilono cerequio. i'm hooked on the cru. |

7/23/2022 - toebel wrote: 91 pointsCan’t believe how much time this needs. Decanted a full 6 hours and it improves significantly by the end but was still too tannic. Dark but not nearly the depth yet or dark fruits and cocoa of brancaia ilatra 18 that was open for a full day. Wish we kept some from the bottle to see how progressed the next day. However based on this experience won’t open another for at least 3 years. It does seem to have a nice complexity of red and some lesser black fruits with a good backbone. But need to see it integrate and tannins soften before it reaches its potential. |

7/23/2022 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsSecond day much better than the first Softened and integrated. Dark fruits matching it’s inky color and round texture. Incredibly long finish Good acid but tannins not overwhelming at all Less so than the sammarco 16 drunk at the same time Extremely full bodied, blackberries dark plums, cocoa for sure. Slightly sour tones of Verdot disappeared the second day which is a good sign for aging. |

4/22/2006 - toebel wrote: 91 pointsDrank with korean barbecue. Perfect match. The plum, dark bold dark fruit of the HD complimented the meat perfectly. This is a wine that I kept coming back to small pour after pour to watch how it softened very slightly over the evening. Only knock is that it has a slight sourness (not atypical for me in Ausie wine finishes) but there is a sweentness to the wine as well. Still very, very enjoyable. |

7/13/2005 - toebel wrote: 92 pointsHad same evening as a 2002 Phelps Napa Cab. Preferred the Phelps for its structure and ageability, but this drank almost as well on that night. A notable absence of oak compared to most of the other good Cali-cabs that I've been drinking lately. Only complaint was the slightest hint of over-ripe fruit on the mid-palate that lended a slight plummy characteristic. This seemed to appear, disappear, appear throughout the evening. Quite frankly, it was probably sitting in slightly warm conditions of Albertsons for a bit too long. All in all a very enjoyable bottle. I think I prefer the 02 though. |

7/13/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsDrank with Mark and Lorie side by side with a Steltzner 2001. Preferences between the two bottles alternated throughout the evening. By the end of the evening, I preferred the Phelps both for today and certainly future drinking, though both were enjoyable. The Phelps had a bit more oak, but still had the fruit to support. It was amazingly dark, like a young St. Estephe, but much less tightly wound. Dark berries, cassis with a long finish. Well done and can't wait for the 02 Insignia. |

6/28/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsThis is the most underpriced, underrated cab that I know. Amazingly dark, sweet from the moment it hits the mouth to the lingering finish. Dark berries, spice, mocha that rounds fill the mouth, coupled with good structure and tannins. This has much more structure than the earlier 1999s which were "yummy" but not built to age, while I believe this should age a good 5+ years. My wife and I agreed that at least in its youth, this could so easily be mistaken for a $60+ cab. I liked this better than both the 2002 Pride (heresy i know) and the 2001 Bressler. Pretty comparable to the Phelps, which I might put a touch above. Will have to compare again to the Neal 2002, which I place as a close call at this point. Had with Korean noddles and soup... not the ideal pairing but a good excuse to drink the wine. For $25, I'll be looking to grab at least 6. |

6/28/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsDrank first of 2. Preferred to the Sonoma Coast 2003. Kept evolving in glass and went very well with grilled salmon. Deep red fruits with slightly earthy red-berry and cherry nose. Not as much spice as the Radio Coteau. Fairly long finish but with the slightest bit of excessive heat (wait another year for the next one). Probably ranking as 3rd favorite domestic pinot lately following RC and Flowers. Definitely a pinot that pleases. |

4/26/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsAbsolutely fantastic value burgundy. Heard great things on the board about this wine, and was not disappointed. Enjoyed immensely more than the overpowering, chocolate-sunday with cherries flavored Siduri Gary's vineyard. This does not have overwhelming fruit, but certainly is not lacking. Excellent acidity and balance. Will become even better certainly over time, but pairs very well with food. Buying two more. |

4/15/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsInteresting cab. It is absolutely smooth, dark, viscous and mouthcoating. The finish is not overwhelming, however, and the tannins and acid seem surprisingly muted. Wonder about aging, except that on second day was as fine as the first. |

4/1/2005 - toebel wrote: 88 pointsDisappointed and ended up opening an earlier Laurent Cazetiers in order to salvage a nice dinner with wild alaskan king salmon. I can see the milk chocolate that some have noted... a fine characteristic perhaps in a barossa shiraz, but not for me in a pinot. Too syruppy, without layers of fruit and lacks a finish. Too sweet. |

4/1/2005 - toebel wrote: 83 pointsEffervescent. Is it possible that this would be enjoyable in several years and I just drank too young. Maybe, but a very bitter, stemmy finish that I don't think would go away. Not at all a pleasant wine. Ended up dumping down the drain and following up with a decent 2002 Laurent Cazetiers. |

4/1/2005 - toebel wrote: 89 pointsStarted opening up a bit more later. Had with wild Alaskan salmon. Opened after two disappointing bottles (Loring Llama and the 99 Girardin that I bought from WinEx). Could definitely taste the oak, but not nearly to the extent as in the llama. Probably would age quite nicely. Tanzer notes "almost medicinal austerity today".... Tanzer gave 91-94 |

3/16/2005 - toebel wrote: 89 pointsMay improve with age. Reminded me a bit of the 00 montrose in color. Montrose though kept evolving was additional layers and had more complexity. Both dark, purply hues. Montrose a bit more grapey. Both tannic. This didn't have as much fruit as I was expecting. |

2/14/2005 - toebel wrote: 93 pointsDrank two days ago-- Friday (Jee's mom's last night) with take-out from Ruth's Chris (salmon, stuffed chicken, seared tuna). The wine has an extraordinary dark hue (reminded me of 2000 Montrose), medium weight. Still tight and I would think would age wonderfully. Good fruit, but not as much as some others in similar range. Really has excellent balance. However, the wine clearly faded by the second day, so I worry a bit about holding up long term. |

2/14/2005 - toebel wrote: 89 pointsDrank yesterday with spaghetti bolognese. Garnett, rust color. Still definitely too tight, though I doubt that the secondary flavors will be too prolific with additional age. May have one more left in cellar. I liked it better than Jee, but that's Barolo. Won't buy any more. |

2/12/2005 - toebel wrote: 92 pointsHad the wine again two weeks later. After drinking the Armand Pommard, while still good, found it to actually have a bit too much fruit, a bit candied upon opening. It is lush with dark berries and an almost inky color for pinot. More fruit than earthy. Found it to settle in by the second day and drank better. Will plan to save my remaining 3 bottles for another 1-3 years. |
