2005 Masi Tupungato Passo Doble

Mendoza Red Blend more

6/26/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Appearance: Quite deep red.
Nose: Initially blueberry and some black currant. Needed time to breathe and it took a few hours for the fruit to open up, showing more red cherries and some smoke.
Taste: Rounded, relatively full body. Mature, slightly sweet fruit which is nicely rounded off by tannins. Well balanced. Juicy. A mild cherry stone bitterness rounds off the taste curve into a relatively long aftertaste.
Very nice food wine and very reminiscent of good versions of the original (Veneto Ripasso wines). The oak that was notably there in its youth has now totally integrated.
At 10 years of age this wine is at peak maturity but may well stay there for several years. I will (try to) keep my last bottle for another 3-5 years.

1994 Smith Woodhouse Porto Late Bottled Vintage

Port Blend more

6/25/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Unfiltered. Bottled 1998.
Appearance: Clear ruby colour, medium deep (for a port). Noticeable but not very much sediment (for a port).
Nose: Deep red fruits; cherries, craneberries, some chocolate and liqorice.
Taste & palate: Medium sweet attack, nice and medium spicey/minerally tannins, medium full body. Chocolate finish which transits into a long, juicy and quite spicy, minerally aftertaste. A rather dry style of LBV with a nice punch and good fruit/tannin/acidity balance, but lacking the extra complexity (which would have been typical of a good Vintage Port). But still very enjoyable and a great buy!
20 years old. Should drink very nicely over the next 3-5 years, possibly quite a bit longer.

1997 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello

Nebbiolo more

6/6/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

(Decanted for sediment and poured straight)
Light burgundy colour with lighter, brick orange edges.
Nose: Classic Piedmontese Nebbiolo nose with tar, roses, hint of aniseed, wild mushrooms, red cherries and raspberry. With time in the glass the nose expands and gains more nuances of tar and dark and red cherry fruit while autumn forest joins the party.
Taste & palate: Semi sweet fruit attack, then quickly firming (or drying) up (depending on how you view it). Not "sweet & sour" but "sweet & dry". Not total harmony between the elements here but nonetheless a very nice wine. With slow grilled Milanese truffle sausage and zucchini, it became a real treat!
On day 2 the wine has changed only marginally; a bit more fruity nose and slightly less sweet in the mouth.
This Ovello will certainly live for many more years but with these tannins I would rather drink up now then store it any longer.

2004 La Clotte Pessac-Léognan La Clotte

Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

6/3/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

(55% Semillon, 45% Sauvignon Blanc, barrique aged)
Appearance: Straw colour towards gold, with a slightly pinkish / peach coloured hue.
Nose: Lovely nose with marzipan, almonds, linoleum
Taste & palate: Also the taste is rather dominated by the mature Semillon component; dry but oily, viscous, slight almond bitterness, long aftertaste with almonds and marzipan.
11 year old, mature wine which (as could be expected) is not in any way "fruity" but well balanced, rich, fresh and appetising. A nice, mature food wine which is 100% alive and might keep well for another 2-3 years.

2000 Laurent Tribut Chablis

Chardonnay more

6/2/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Finally an aged, early noughties Chablis which is not oxidised!!
Appearance: Lovely, straw colour.
Nose: Initially dominated by a wonderful, semillon like waxiness with notes of honey, followed by oysters and sea water.
Taste & palate: Mature, again wax, medium to rich body (for a Chablis), medium oiliness. Not exactly fruit forward but still a combination of fruit with freshness/acidity which is quite appetising. This wine had great acidity when young and that still shows. Very dry but rich and slightly oily at the same time.
Not terribly complex but a very, very good, aged Chablis Village and a very pleasant surprise! I would not advice to cellar this much longer (although it might just handle a few more years) but rather enjoy it now at full maturity.

NV Gonzalez-Byass Palomino Fino Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Tío Pepe (Muy Seco-Extra Dry)

more

5/29/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Nose: Chalk, yeast, baked bread, oily, touch of nuts. Touch of iodine and a slight salty tang, somewhere between light olive brine and a very distant sea breeze.
Taste & palate: Totally dry, medium to light body, appetising, medium acidity, slightly oily, medium to long aftertaste and again this light touch of olive brine. Initially (and when tasted alone, as an aperitif) appearing to be light bodied, although tasting and re-tasting, not to mention adding salty or dried foods, tend to expose that it a rather full-bodied and intense taste.
Yes, there are sharper, fuller, fresher and richer finos out there (in particular "en ramas") but standard Tio Pepe again confirms that it is, by miles, the world's best, globally and universally available low price wine. Serve Tio Pepe with cured ham or good olives, lean back and enjoy!
One week after opening (kept refrigerated in full, smaller bottle) the wine is still fresh but has taken on additional notes of almond, both on the nose and in the mouth.

Nose: Gooseberries, cat pee, freshly cut grass and some buttery oak.
Taste & palate: Buttery maize, medium oiliness, nicely balancing acidity. Finishing with a slight (and appetising) bitterness.
This wine currently display more oaky notes than before (and a bit much for my liking).

Colour: Deep golden.
Nose: Citrus, peaches, butter / toast.
Taste & palate: Vibrant, fruity, noticeable (rather over powering) oak sweetness. Minerally and quite spicy.
In its current state too oaky for my taste. But there is substance, acidity and minerals here and all this might just integrate better in a few years. I might put aside a few bottles for 4-5 years to see where that might take this wine.

1994 Antonio Bernardino Paulo da Silva Vinho Regional Lisboa Ribamar

Red Blend more

4/12/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Appearance: Transparent red / brick red with medium wide red-orange rim. Sediment as well as quite a bit of bottle film (decanted).
Nose: Dark plums, strawberries, leather.
Taste & palate: Fresh, quite a bit of acidity but mixed with some very soft and sweet, matured red strawberry and raspberry fruit. Medium to medium light body. Nice and quite mature but slightly spicy tannins appearing form the middle of the taste curve and hanging in, together with the mature fruit, to the very end of the long aftertaste.
Food wine! Went very well with cream based beef casserole with lots of onion and mushrooms, matching the sweetness from the onions and the cream perfectly.
At 20 years this wine is mature and time has softened some of its edges but it's very much alive. I would say its's a wine in a rather traditional Portuguese style, but in the fruitier sense, as opposed to in the "dried to death in barrel" sense. Different and refreshing! Wish I had more bottles - and if so I would drink them now and over the next 2-3 years.

UPDATE: 4 days after opening (kept refrigerated in a full, smaller bottle) there is no noticeable deterioration and the wine is just as "sweet & sour fresh" as when it was first opened.

2009 Niepoort Porto Late Bottled Vintage

Port Blend more

4/9/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Lovely rose and liquorice notes, even tar and smoke. But primarily a spicy, fresh and fruity nose.
Taste & palate: Rounded and juicy attack, so fresh and "clean". Moderate sweetness, as typical for Niepoort, and minerals. Lovely juiciness with lots of semi-sweet fruit balanced by lots of tannins and a nice acidity. Lovely young port, on a par even with some of the lighter vintage ports (except that this is better structured and more balanced and elegant).
Improved after overnight airing. Drinks superbly right now but will certainly last (and develop) for another 10-15 years, probably 20 (Drink 2014-2034).
Great wine and great QPR!

1987 José Maria da Fonseca Periquita

Vinho Regional Península de Setúbal/Terras do Sado more

4/10/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Appearance: Very little loose deposit but a lot of film on the inside of the bottle's downward side. Medium red toward brick red colour with broad brick orange edge.
Nose: Prunes and heavy plum jam, dust and some old leather. Some volatile acidity also with the slightest hint of strawberry vinegar.
Taste: Slightly sweet attack, round and very mature fruit with some sweetness, medium body, finishing on a more tannic and slightly spicy note. Relatively long aftertaste.
Very mature and past its peak but not totally over the hill. Drinkable although perhaps more "interesting" than exciting.

DAY 2 (after opening): Wow, the dust and volatile touch of vinegar is completely gone and the nose is now pure, mature prune & dark plum fruit. The body has also sharpened up a bit and is more defined and structured albeit still mature. It's still past its peak but not by as much as it felt like yesterday (when I estimated it to "should have been drunk by 2007", now i update that estimate to 2012).
Quite enjoyable given its age (27 years!) and origins, not to mention the ridiculously low price. Now I'm quite looking forward to opening the 1985, which is supposedly a better vintage for Periquita....

1999 Cousiño-Macul Cabernet Sauvignon Antiguas Reservas

Maipo Valley more

4/6/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

* Nose: Black currants, then leather, wood, some smoke. Later comes pencil led, prunes, dust and suddenly lots of vanilla.
*Taste & palate: Mature, sweet black currant and blueberry fruit. Medium rich body with a "slickness" typical of bottle ageing. Hints of burnt oak, but only a hint. Mature, rounded and slightly spicy, peppery tannins.
- Mature but surprisingly good and alive for this 16 YO Chilean CS. Reading earlier comments from around 10 years ago it seems that this, once probably over-oaked CS, has actually come around and reached some level of balance or harmony. It clearly has reached its peak but I think it might still drink well for another 1-3 years. After that, however... (I would not look forward to when it starts loosing much more of its fruit).
(Made from pre-phylloxera vines)

1992 Churchill/Graham Porto Late Bottled Vintage

Port Blend more

4/5/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Churchill's LBV 1992 (not Graham's), bottled 1998 (without filtration).

Nose: Initially very mature but refined and clear read and dark berries fruit, gradually giving way to more warm and dried fruits like prunes and dried yellow plums. A hint of dust. Displaying very typical bottle aged aromas.
Taste & palate: Lovely balance and harmony. Spicy and minerally in the typical fiery manner of good Ports (and other Douro's). Again the smoothness of bottle ageing is very evident.

A lovely 22 year old LBV, still going strong. This will round the 25 year mark without problems.
So what might remain to want in this wine? Despite its lovely balance and quite a bit of elegance it's perhaps not very deep. But what it lacks in depth and perhaps a bit on the complexity side I would say it makes nicely up for with its elegance and balance.
I don't think many +20 year old LBVs would do much better than this.

Nose: Raw berries fruit attack, then some raw meat, blood and a hint of black pepper. Almost more Rhone Shiraz than Barbera like.
Taste & palate: Mature, rounded and slightly sweet fruit. Nice freshness/acidity. Some rather rounded tannins towards the end of the taste curve. Medium light body. Medium long aftertaste.
Very juicy and easy to drink. Nicely balanced wine. Drink up by 2016-2017?

2005 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva

Tempranillo more

3/22/2015 - SAND wrote: NR

Nose: Quite traditional Rioja nose with red fruits (between raspberries and dark plums) and a polished vanilla oakiness.
Taste: Quite light. Fruit, some acidity/ freshness and moderate and partly "polished" tannins.
An ok 9,5 year old Rioja Gran Reserva but without personality. This blends perfectly into the vast sea of similar Rioja wines. Although it was "ok" drinking there was absolutely nothing to remember about this one.
Personally I would leave this in the cellar for another 5-10 years, hoping for more bottle aromas to develop and take the chance that the taste might be rather reduced then.

2001 Schloss Reinhartshausen Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen Riesling Auslese

Rheingau more

3/7/2015 - SAND Likes this wine: NR

Clear, golden colour.
Nose: Typical mature Rhine Riesling "firne" nose, with some botrytis, lots of marzipan, stone minerality and some earl grey tea.
Taste: Medium sweet, medium acidity level, medium richness. So a lot of "medium" here but not mediocrity. A certain "sugar water" feeling but also a lot more, including marzipan, minerality and mature peach and honey melon fruit.
Not a stellar wine but still so very, very, very drinkable.
Fully mature and lovely drinking on its own right now. Due to the moderate acidity I would drink it up now or within the next 2-3 years.

Nose: Lots of yellow apples. Then biscuits, limestone and quite pronounced oxidized notes. However after some breathing these pc notes started to recede, with the yellow apple fruit taking a more leading role.
Taste & palate: Rich, mature fruit sweetness, nice freshness/ acidity. Long, rich aftertaste.
Mature champagne which probably is at or around its peak. Might last longer but drinking very well now. Great food wine.

All in all really a Riesling-GV mix, with smell and taste elements from both. A nice, fruity, uncomplicated and easy-drinking wine. Drinking very well now but should have potential for 2-4 years further cellaring.
