Great zin and an absolute steal at $2.99 close-out price. Not over ripe like so many zins can be. This one is balanced and is an example that other zin producers should strive for.

Always a great product from this producer. Well balanced with a nice finish. Big, old world style and went great with some BBQ ribs.

This drinks more like a right bank Bordeaux than a Cali merlot.

This was not as good as when I tasted it at the trade show. It was more of a 93 point wine. Way smoother and more complex.

Great example of an affordable, age-worthy Cali Cabernet. Was very impressed. Plenty of fruit and the tannins were smooth but still there after a bit of air time. Nice finish.

Drank w/ a steak covered in a chimichurri sauce. A perfect match for this wine. Tannins have smoothed out and the secondary characteristics have set in. This is in a great place right now and should drink well for at least another 5 years, if not more. Sad I only have one left.

Saturday, December 11, 2010 - Still drinking nicely and shows stronger on the 2nd day. Fruit and tannins are both still in balance. Can go a few more years but not sure it will improve.

Nice golden color. Aromas of honey, apricot, peach and spice. On the palate this shows, pineapple, spice, glycerin, and creme brulee. This didn't quite have the acidity that I hoped for. It was there but not quite enough. Still very good though w/ a long finish.

This is still dark purple in the glass. Outstanding nose of raspberry, garrigue, spice, and a bit of white pepper. This wine needed some time to open up, as it kept improving over the next couple of hours. Really needs a few more hours to show it's stuff. This was explosive on the palate with flavors of raspberry, kirsch, spice, and herb. Absolutely perfectly balanced with the fruit, acidity and the subtle but powerful tannic backbone bringing it all together . This was a beautiful wine that is drinking great now and will continue to do so for many years to come.

This was showing more youthful than I was expecting it to be. Crimson with a hint of bricking on the edges. This took a while to open up and didn't really start strutting it's stuff for a couple of hours. Nose has a bit of barnyard, leather, pencil lead, dark fruit, and crushed stone. Good dark fruit and minerality on the palate. Still has good acidity and a firm tannic backbone. I would never guess this to be 19 years old. This will easily go another 5-7 years.

Night 1: Very light color. Got a lot of cherry and pomegranate on the nose and palate. Bright acidity and some tannins give it a fairly long finish. But seems angular right now.
Night 2: Now this is more like it. Cherry, raspberry, spice, and some earthiness. Very nicely balanced and the tannins have let up a bit.
Night 3: Very similar to the previous night except way more silky on the palate. A bit more earth and some cola also started adding to the mix.
Overall a solid wine that needs at least a couple more years to settle down. I think this has the potential to be really good with a bit more age. Really solid QPR. 91+

This wine seems to be hitting it's stride but should stay that way for quite a while. It took about an hour in the decanter to open up and stayed that way for 5+ hours. You could definitely notice that it was older than the other wines that the rep was pouring but not a whole lot. Wonderful nose of berry, garrigue, licorice, and a bit of spice. Very smooth on the palate with the flavors matching the nose. Nice long finish. I'm really liking this wine right now and wishing I had more than just the one left. Because as good as this is now it may get better over the next couple of years. But it is pretty tasty now.

Ruby red with an orange rim. Noticeable aging but not as much as expected. Huge nose of cedar and lead pencil with a bit of fruit still hanging in there. Very smooth, tannins are fully integrated. Still some fruit on the palate but probably won't last another 5 years. Very nice 20+ second finish. Not what I was expecting after all I've read about the wines from this vintage. This is my first experience with an aged Bordeaux and I really enjoyed it. And not just b/c it was my birth year wine.

Brownish re w/ a light orange rim. Muted nose of stewed fruit, herbs, smoke, and a bit of autumn. More acid than fruit but there is some cranberry, tea, and a bit of fall earth. 10 -15 second finish. Very nice pickup for $15 on Wine Commune.

Dark brooding red showing no signs of age. Great nose of cedar, chocolate , cherry, and a bit of tobacco leaf/cigar box. Very smooth on the palate. Great balance and structure. Tannins are there but mostly in the background. They become a little more pronounced after a couple of hours making me think that this should do quite well for at least 5- 7 more years. Went great with the steaks. Flavors are similar to the nose. 15+ second finish. Drinking very nicely now but I think will improve as more secondary aromas and flavors emerge. My first Insignia and was very pleased.
