2013 Marc Colin et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain

Chardonnay more

6/10/2015 - Dbrane wrote: NR

This was more immediately seductive compared to the Caillerets. The power and richness really shows through here with exotic flowers and spices. The density in the palate fans out in the finish which was almost one minute long. Round and complete. Delicious juice.

Did not wow in the beginning. Rather muted because I think the serving temperature was too cold. But with air this truly blossomed up with lots of white flowers, finesse and stony minerality. Very racy, precise and linear on the palate. Superb Chassagne!

1999 Faiveley Echezeaux

Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

This is a surprisingly approachable wine from Faiveley despite the vintage. Lovely dark fruited, spicy nose. Structured on the palate but without the harsh tannins. I quite like this for its seriousness yet approchability at the moment.

Not showing too much at the moment. Very light and pure with interesting aromas of cheese, peaches, white flowers. Not as oily or unctous as most of the Rhone whites I've had. This perhaps needs some time to evolve.

Nice ruby. Tasted very young. This is a very elegant example of CSD without the density and punch one gets from say CdlR. I very much like the sense of purity and lightness here. So easy to drink and one of the first to be emptied from the bottle. Blossomed further with air. This needs more time. Great value here.

Transparent ruby. Looked like Pinot but the aromas did not seem like. Refined and silky on the palate. This was young yet surprisingly not tannic at all. Felt a bit modern but not saccharine sweet for this warm vintage. Fairly enjoyable now.

Cork was in good condition. Lots of green peppers and stewed fruits on the nose and palate. Drinking at its peak now and likely to stay that way for a while. Wouldn't evolve further so drink up!

Tasted blind. I guessed a young vintage Bourgogne from a great producer. Couldn't believe it was a '06. Very good acidity and balance for the vintage. Steely minerality. I guessed a Bourgogne only because the finish was a tad clipped, but entry was very good. Good juice!

Out of all the Echezeauxs of the night, this had the most spicy nose and the one most identifiable as a Vosne. Beautiful red fruits and spice dominated aromas with a very well-balanced palate for this vintage. So sappy and complex. No obvious oak at all. Very defined and pleasurable. Excellent juice!

This was huge, probably due to the vintage. Again this was similar to many '99s I had which were brimming with extract but so shut down. Dry and austere and a beast. Full-bodied and impressive but more a tasting wine than drinking wine.

Tasted blind together with the '07 Bizot Echezeaux. Like what BH says, this is indeed a big Echezeaux, especially for the '07 vintage. Austere, hard and quite shut down (probably due to the huge dry extract). This may come off as a tad oaky and modern. The majority of the table prefered this over the Bizot but I did not like this as much as I prefer a more classic expression.

Blinded together with '07 d'Eugenie Echezeaux. This was more elegant, purer and overall more interesting aromatically with citrus notes. Very true to the vintage character too. I can see the appeal of Bizot's style now though I find that the prices is indeed too high for the inherent quality. It's a very good Echezeaux but not a great one.

This was quite robust and tight for a 2004. Some green pepper on the nose though not overly distracting. Lots of stuffing here and this might be one of the few '04s which needs more aging. No signs of premature aging here, as this has everything in place for a beautiful future.

2008 Domaine Anne Gros Echezeaux Les Loachausses

Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

5/25/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 90 points

I believe the light-handed style of Anne Gros often makes the oak stand out and hence many critics feel it to be too oaky. After some years, the oak typically integrates despite the lighter style of the Domaine. This had very light color, and a pure elegant body. Very pretty, aromatic, spicy and quite Vosne in character.

Not oxidized, in fact this was quite restrained compared to the '04 Blain-Gagnard Criots on the night. A little oaky, this needs more time to integrate well but definitely one with huge potential.

Minty. Big ripe fruits on the very balanced albeit full body. There's everything in place for a long lasting future but at the moment it was very clammed up, revealing almost nothing. A serious Echezeaux with a lot of potential.

Tasted blind beside the 2009. Couldn't identify that both were the same producer, such was the vintage character. This '04 had none of the green stemminess on the nose. After it was unveiled, I did notice a touch of herbalness on the palate but nothing too intrusive. I actually guessed a 2001. Very good for the vintage.

From an odd 500ml bottle. Still very young and primary. Tropical fruits, esp mangoes. A bit cloying and heavy like how Sauternes tend to be but still enjoyable at the end of a dinner. For my taste I would prefer this to have more age. Serve this very chilled.

Definitely tasted like it had some age. Not Bordeaux but I found it slightly new-world in style. If not then a Spanish blend. Quite surprise that it was a Tignanello though on retrospect I guess I shouldn't be since I barely tasted much of this winery. Peaking now and drinking optimally.
