Golden but not pre-moxed. Not rich. Very mineral and understated. Seems quite tight and not showing much at the moment.

2000 Château Guiraud

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 86 points

From an odd 500ml bottle. Still very young and primary. Tropical fruits, esp mangoes. A bit cloying and heavy like how Sauternes tend to be but still enjoyable at the end of a dinner. For my taste I would prefer this to have more age. Serve this very chilled.

1987 Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT

SuperTuscan Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 89 points

Definitely tasted like it had some age. Not Bordeaux but I found it slightly new-world in style. If not then a Spanish blend. Quite surprise that it was a Tignanello though on retrospect I guess I shouldn't be since I barely tasted much of this winery. Peaking now and drinking optimally.

Have not heard of the Chateau before, and not featured individually in Neal Martin's Pomerol. To me it was quite obvious a Right Bank, with its plummy notes and silky but noticeable tannins. Quite an enjoyable drink now though definitely not reaching the heights of Pomerol.

Red Rhone Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 89 points

Wow the second Rhone of the night which tasted vaguely Burgundian. Dark opaque and clearly a big and bold wine. But there's finesse and purity hence my initial thought was a Burgundy. Finish was a tad clipped though. Nonetheless quite enjoyable.

1995 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence

Red Rhone Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 90 points

Initial guess was Burgundy due to the elegance but a closer analysis made me guess a Northern Rhone. So it was quite a surprise to me that it was a CDP. Pure and fruity without the barnyardy/funky elements which I hate. Pretty good wine, at least for my taste.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Rabajà

Nebbiolo more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 91 points

Again this shows how Barolo/Barbaresco from top producers need many many years before softening. Decanted for 1-2 hours before drinking, this was tightly knit with bruising tannins. Surprise for a Barbaresco but not a surprise from Giacosa. Excellent potential here from the dry extract and a complete wine. Not so enjoyable at the moment, tt just needs time, plenty of it.

1998 Yeringberg

Yarra Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 87 points

Not so expressive on the nose but definitely could pass off as a Bordeaux, perhaps St Julien? I think the only hint that this is a Aussie is the sweetness right at the finish. Other than that this is a rather accomplished Bordeaux blend and drinking well now though it would not win any prizes for complexity or depth.

Pinot Noir more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 87 points

I am just a tad underwhelmed by this bottling. There's a certain stemminess and bitter finish here which led me to guess '97. Also it lacks a certain precision for this higher altitude vineyard. Nonetheless the Chambolle character was here and definitely with good mouth-filling extract. Pretty nose but lacks finesse and purity.

2004 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots

Pinot Noir more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 88 points

Blinded, I guessed a '04 Grand Cru. Bricking on the rims. The green herbaceous aromas of 2004 was present though not overwhelmingly strong in the beginning. Other than that the palate was intense, structured and very clean. The intensity and overall depth led me to guess a Grand Cru though I couldn't pinpoint the exact village as the greenness did mask other aspects of the terroir. A vintage marked wine rather than terroir. Quite enjoyable drinking now though unfortunately at the end of the dinner the nose became overwhelmingly green and herbal.

1996 Duval-Leroy Champagne Femme de Champagne

Champagne Blend more

4/30/2015 - Dbrane wrote: 90 points

From a unique 500ml bottle. I must be admit to be rather taken to this Champagne. Bright golden, not much bubbles. More like a still wine. Very good acidity but not overwhelming and a superb lasting finish. Good mid-palate intensity and quite moreish. I like that its not so toasty or too citrusy. I guess its practically impossible to make a bad Champagne in this great vintage.

Wow it was more than 2 years ago since I last had this. From my prior note, it seemed like nothing has changed. Still golden, vibrant acidity though this time it did seem sweeter than before. But still the acidity kept everything in check. I think I need 5 more years before I touch the next bottle!

Tasted a bit mature - I was thinking '90s. Definitely very Barolo-like. Tea, flower petals and very very grippy tannins. Fairly full-bodied. Have not heard of this Ghemme before but I understand its near to Piemonte. For my taste I would prefer to age this further.

1999 Jacques Cacheux Echezeaux

Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

4/22/2015 - Dbrane wrote: NR

Tasted blind I couldn't guess anywhere else other than Rhone. Even when it was revealed that it wasn't a Rhone, I still could not guess it could be anywhere else. Did not feel out of place when drunk beside a Cornas. So barnyardy, smelly, herbal on the nose and robust on the palate. After looking at some of the other CT notes, I think this is what it is. A very unique intepretation of Echezeaux from a great 1999 vintage no less and it left me completely befuddled.

2009 Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Furstentum

Alsace Grand Cru Gewürztraminer more

4/22/2015 - Dbrane Likes this wine: 90 points

I really love this. Did not have the overwhelming aromatics of a typical Gewurz. More restrained and focused. Palate-wise was light yet intense. Off-dry, similar to a Kabinett level German. The higher alcohol compared to a German Riesling did not stick out at all. So balanced and so lovely to drink now. Excellent!

No signs of bricking. Still tannic and rather sweet, I guessed a great year perhaps 2005? So was shocked when it was revealed to be a 1990. Totally tight and unyielding on the palate, this seemed to have evolved in a glacial pace with a monumental structure. Given the producer I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Not so enjoyable at the moment but I don't know when this will ever be ready. I'm rating it based on its tremendous ability to age.

A bit of raspberry, cherry on the nose. Improved when served slightly chilled. Very pretty and floral for a Pommard. Many guessed a Chambolle. I think the Pommard character manifests itself on the finish where the tannins start to surface. Otherwise this was a very elegant and drinkable wine. Not terribly showy but quite serious.

4/18/2015 - Dbrane wrote: NR

My experience concurs with John Gilman's notes. This bottle was much more advanced than the '97 and '99 tasted together. Color was golden and palate was rich and not as structured. Where's the steely minerality? Sweet on the entry but dry on the finish. It doesn't feel oxidized but just feels odd.

Almost as young as the '99 tasted together but this already had notes of petrol on the nose. Equally tight and restrained with lots of citrus filled minerality on the dry finish. Just amazing how full of potential this is. Not really enjoyable now, but will be in at least 5-10 years time.

Pale straw. Color looks barely aged. Equally tight on the palate with citrus and a whole lot of structure and minerality on the back-end. So tightly coiled but you can feel the layers of dry extract. A great bottle of Riesling with plenty of years ahead.

Pale yellow. No signs of any premature aging. Very expressive on the nose with white flowers and the tell-tale Puligny aromas. Concentrated, deep, multi-faceted on the palate with an extremely persistent finish. This was so Puligny and so drinkable now its no sin to pop one. An excellent Puligny 1er Cru and a worthy tribute to Madame Leflaive.
