Old molasses or sorghum comes to mind. My Russell county Kentucky connection. This one, it has an old smell like that: not bad, and with a little fresh Indonesian cinnamon.

When I breath in a deep filled glass, I get a whisper of cardamon, and a reminder of new suede.

Overall, its a mix of old and new. It's fresh and evolved.
The complexity comes together to make a decent bottle.

I'm at the Raddison Hitel in Portland, Oregon and this was a wine they had for sell. I mighthave purchased the kast, or not. either way, its farbetter than any in room mini bar mini I have ever tasted.
Blackberry and thuja,(pacific NW-not yet ripe evergreen).
If I ever spend two days at the PDX Portland Airport, I'll probably do it at the Radisson.

Dark venous red in color, it has a lot of extracted pigment. Yummy, expressive, and extroverted, this is an easy wine to like. There are enough tannins to keep it from being wine candy. Right now, it is the polar opposite of the Et Fille Eola Amity Hills from the same vintage. Loads of fruit, and a little sousbois, and a slick slatey mineral shows itself during the überlong finish. It has more presence in the mouth than in the glass at 55-60ºF. I suspect if it were consumed at a warmer temperature, the fruit forward nature would get too heavy and it would fall on its face. It tastes young, and this bottle could have continued to evolve for years because most of the fruit is primary and secondary with just a subconscious tertiary component.

Tight and a little chalky. Maybe it needs a lot of time to open up. It was in a similar place as when I first tasted it from the producer and his daughter, or maybe this is all it has. I have one more bottle, maybe its the Montille of Willamette.

Opaque in the glass. In the glass, I smell juicy blueberry, hot road tar, something floral, like a faint hyacinth. In the mouth the complexity increased, there is acidity, and a modern structure, with clean bright lines. The tannins grip like a suction cup on wet glass. The finish reminds me of coriander with just a bit of cardamon and the tiniest amount of graphite dusted on; yummy now, but has plenty of life. Picked up at vineyard, stored at 55F ever since. By far, the best $34 bottle of Syrah I have tasted to date.

So sad this was my only bottle. I am finding I like all of Méo wines I taste, and I have yet to open any of my premier crus or grands.
Peak of ripe without overly ripe fruit with acid, and spice and a very juicy and clean finish that lingers and the palate 30" plus.

This had a lot of character, definitely of NSG. Plenty of dark fruit, savory spice, and charred meat, with a little good funk that added to the complexity. I am glad I have 4 more bottles, this one makes me think they have a decent bit of life remaining.

Brickish to garnet red in color with a clear meniscal disc.
The aroma knocks it out of the park. There was dark cherry that was steeped in cinnamon, orange peel, and savory spice.
In the mouth, acidity dominates and becomes a little muddled. The finish is tight at first, and tightened with each drink.

I picked this this up because a documentary called Mondovino. Montille's wines are known for longevity and this one should be no exception. RIP Monsieur Montille.

2005 Château de Fonbel

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/14/2015 - Roentgen Ray Likes this wine: 89 points

I shy away from 2005 because it was unreadable in its youth. St. Emilion is supposed to be the softer side of Bordeaux with more Merlot in the mix. This bottle had graphite, some inky fruit, textured tannins, some coarse sediment. It's a clean taste, without any outliers.

Initially after pulling the cork there was a little funkiness. I wasn't sure if the bottle was corked, or if it were just Rhone funk. After 20 minutes the funk was gone and instead there was bright cherry fruit, mineral dust, and a savory spiciness. The finish was very long and the was moderate sediment firmly adherent to the bottle.

At first the tannins make you want to put it down. And then with some time it starts to open up and express its charter. It's both beautiful and reserved. It has character, and something that makes you want more, and strength that pairs well with meat, butter, and the food of the region.
