Opened at Village Pub in Woodside on 8th anniversary. Great nose, balance, earth, and distinguishable notes in taste---ready to drink right now and could settle in for longer. This is the grand cru of US pinot.

Very disappointing. Couldnt get through the heat to get to anything worthwhile. As always, the SLH fruit and stoney earth brings its rewards but not at this px. I dont think this was a good year. I decanted for 1.5 hrs and nothing showed up. Trying again tonite.

Very average, was expecting more....maybe needed to sit, but its been 6 years. I never got to the fruit, nor the earthy tones that I look to OR wines for. Way too much $$$.

Very good wine, took a little while to open up. Another example how much better the value is in up in WA. The wines are not cookie cutter Napa style. This has a long finish, soft tannins and redder fruit than I am used to. It has some pine, tobacco Bordeaux type notes in the background. My wife and her mother thought it was the best one period they've had in a long time....if this is in Oakville, this $75. Ordering a case.

Drinking beautifully right now. Could smell it from a foot away. Not my favorite flavor profile of strawberries and sweet red fruit but very elegant, seamless presentation. Wish I bought more.

A welcome mouthful...deep, rich, spicy, fruity. I really looked forward to sampling this after tasting every imaginable SLH pinot. The nose resonated with the same traits. This could be over the top, but I expected it to be. We opened this against a DuMol Syrah that was $30 more and the Novy destroyed it.

Impressive and showed real depth above all else. Light fruit, cherry and raspberry notes...a little barnyard on the nose. Followed by a midpalate and finish that was deep, balanced and soft. Best wine I have had in awhile.

Like vines being grown in a barn. What a good wine. Its teeth staining syrah for sure, but impressive. Very balanced and structured wine, with plenty of fruit up front, pomegranate, blackberry and some borscht for good measure. There is some elegance, but that doesnt seem to be the point of this wine..The WA reds continue to show me more complexity than CA.

Good wine and well balanced with some must on the finish, strong midpalate of lighter fruit, cherry and cranberry. Decanted for over an hour and served at Thanksgiving and it held up, not a showstopper by any means. Overpriced at $55 a bottle, and definitely has pairing limitations with the sweet fruit.

2004 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard

Santa Lucia Highlands more

7/9/2005 - rodge wrote: 90 points

Tasted at Pinot Days and was a clear winner along with a few others: Tandem Auction, Freeman Akikos and Hirsch. Violet and lavender nose was unbelievable followed by blueberry/blackerry taste that came on strong. dont know about balance, but Loring's wines are all about the here and now. Tasted again on 11/11/05: got cloves and light spices on the nose, not as dramatic as before. everything was more muted and fruit was more rhubarb than black...needs to sit a little while before tannins settle into elegance. I hate to say it, but the wine feels manipulated and heavy handed by the winemaker.

Great wine, some floral (violets) and blackberry on the nose, followed by a well-balanced experience that got better over time. The wine had zesty fruit that paired extremely well with the Armadillo Willy's brisket and BBQ sauce---sounds white trash, but the SLH fruit goes well with BBQ. Wine confirmed for me that Rosella's is an exceptional vineyard that has duration and complexity...and a credit to Siduri for not showing too much too early.

2002 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard

Santa Lucia Highlands more

10/28/2005 - rodge wrote: 88 points

not impressed, the wine is almost out of gas by Oct-05. Got some orange and citrus on the nose and the midpalate contained some of the SLH nuances of smoke, earth and dark fruit. However, the wine disappeared like a fine mist and lacked balance overall..very disappointing. Had a similar experience with a Miner Gary's '02 bottle and I think it could be related to the vineyard. Gary's is a day one experience that has some nice fruit, but paired against a Rosella's or Pisoni, it doesnt stand a chance. Had a Siduri Rosella's afterwards that blew it away.

Classic RRV pinot, but with depth and structure matching any other top label. Would match this against Rochioli, DuMol, Kistler for 1/2 the price. Plum and black cherry on the palate but layer of complexity that heightens the sensation. Took a little while to settle down...told one person to let it sit in the glass for 30 minutes and he'd have a different wine in his glass...I was right. Difficult to acquire, only made for charity events and friends.

Big, bold, chewy wine...blind tasting would have shown syrah. Its a different take on pinot, I am not offended like others. Once it sits for awhile, the structure takes hold and it becomes a very good wine, with blackberry, cassis and some coffee in it. Loring runs the gamut on taste and nose in his pinots, this is a variation of his style, that alone makes it good enough to appreciate. A WS 95 I would argue with however...which was among the highest in '02.
