Feels more fuller bodied than the 2013, and I must confess a tiny bit more conventional SB at first approach on the nose. Still gains steam with air, becoming more pungent, but never feels airy. Still, we gladly finished it, but it lacks the elegance (for now? I think for this vintage) that swept me off my feet in the 2013.

This has closed down like a brutal portcullis since tasting with George the Greek in at his shop in Tain last March. Do NOT open this for at least 5 years, probably more. Very hard to coax anything out at this point. Day 3 this is just getting started to unwind with leather, paprika, chocolate (perplexing to me), some meatiness.

Fading flowers/Bic pen ink, some bitey fizz, a giant plush raspberry and blueberry jam, and one hell of a pizza wine. The fizzy grip and sudden nosedive away from the fruit on the finish makes it even more fun than a lot of Barbera for a pizza companion.

This is coming along quite nicely. Giant, exuberant wood spiced, honeyed applesauce and pear skin; if only it didn't finish a touch hot. Still: very, very good!

From a mag--It just became more and more crystalline the longer it sat, and by day two it was really singing. I would love to age this mid-term and get it at its most fresh and mineral and incisive point.

NV Ramos Pinto Porto 10 Year Old Tawny Quinta de Ervamoira

Port Blend more

6/21/2015 - Gargantua wrote: NR

What I love about this is its soy sauce/Maggi umami character which I find unique among the young tawnies I've tried so far. Producer explained that because the very warm Ervamoira vineyard produces such dark fruit, it typically ends up being only 13-16 yo tawny which satisfies the authorities as pale enough for a 10yo tawny (hence an extra value).

This rose is all wrong to my palate; spikes with a bit of rubbing alcohol aggression on the midpalate. Maybe the mags are showing different from the 750s, but this is not my type of rose.

It was even creamier and with more acid conviction when tasting leftovers on day two. I wonder if I'll be able to cellar this a couple years to see where it goes, because I'll wager it's a great place.

Bah. The type of rosé I dislike--something too aromatic on the nose and saccharine on the finish that reminds me of Viognier or Vernentino, and which accumulates on the palate almost logarithmically. Stemmy tomato too. Not a rosé for me.

Super lean and chalky, 'nothing in excess' as Tanzer remarked of the 2010...the aromatics bring to mind Cab Franc at times; there's an alluring cinnamon component on the finish. My first Boulay rose and hopefully not my last.

Overripe roses, pollen-y flowers, bitter chocolate, sweet candied fennel, celery leaves, plums, and a bit of green olives. This still has the tannic finish and an acidic spine necessary to keep evolving, in fact I think this has a tiny 1-2 yr upside potential. The 05 was peaking around 2010 to my mind, but this somehow feels like a sturdier vintage than 05 was. Delicious and unique as always--this wine strikes a rare balance which can prove all to elusive for GSM based blends from the Languedoc, but the addition of Carignan goes far in that respect.

Clean and lean; like a quiet statue.., no frills, easy to drink as it's austere yet refreshing. Fleshy enough to play with food. I tend to like leaner Pfalz spatburgunder rosés, and this very much fits the bill

A broad and somewhat syrupy Riesling with ripe nectarine fruit comes together nicely on the finish with an acid that lets it taper off into an inviting, versatile wine, great QPR--as food friendly as a Spatlese should be.

A good vintage for Pico. Feels lean and incisive a bit, but generous enough on the midpalate to counter the citrusy acid. Refreshing mineral nose. This just makes me wonder how fabulous the 1er crus were this year.

A tiny, pleasant tannic bite on the finish at this juncture. This really needs time; the fruit only presented itself after an hour and a half of airtime. More beautiful lightweight tart cherry jam, smouldering fire smoky allusions near the finish. Just think what these will be like in a couple years....

One of these banana liqueur noses. Go f*ck yourself label; there's no way that this is 13.5%, because two sips and you're sideways. I'd bet the farm against 13.5. Too big and cake-y to my palate for a 100% (well, allegedly 5% Syrah) Carignan. Makes me wonder if Mourvèdre made it into this vintage? Feels Spanish. I immediately opened a Rimbert Carignan to remedy this situation, which worked much better with our lamb loin chops.

Earthy, bright and pungent--sweet catnip on the nose, and glass residuals of leather with an almost sherry-like aromatic bent before the finish. These wines always resonate so deeply within me, and have since my first taste back in 2010. All quality levels this year from the purchased fruit "Basis" up to the daddy Bundtsandstein are exceptional, boutique, unique wines of character.

This is the real deal. Mind bending as promised. Creamy, honeycomb, slight caramel/oxidative, rather heavy midpalate weight, but then it perplexes with its cheek twisting limestone dry finish. A wine to contemplate. Who knew they could make amazing white wine too....

Stemmy but sappy, light-footed as usual, wild and delicious tart cherry. Even with purchased fruit they can render something this lovely... a surprising amount of sediment, so stand it upright and take care near the last pours.
