Fine, aged Hawkes Bay chardonnay, holding up well, nice line of acidity cutting through the leesy richness, perfect accompaniment to cold turkey.

Lovely Medoc cigar-box and leather nose; garrigue, mocha, and liquorice on the palate; persistent controlled fruit and decent acidity; nice mineral line and structure; slightly hot, moderately long finish; everything pretty much in balance. A thoroughbred punching its weight - very enjoyable.

Drank with Neil. Floral nose, lemon and lime on the palate, some clover honey notes, a wonderful line of acidity. Most of all, unbelievably fresh for a twelve-year-old, with a long, rich finish, suggesting a long life ahead.

I pulled this bottle at random from a blacked-out cellar (power cut) to share with Huw and Pete after a hard day's work on the farm, and what a delight it turned out to be. Alongside the distinctive Margaux perfume there was no shortage of fruit, but delivered subtly, corsetted by fine tannins and carried by a core of persistent and balanced acidity with mineral overtones. Easily wine of the night; I just wish I could lay my hands on some more.

Nose of candied apple. Apple and pear on the palate, brisk acidity, but some honey too. Great value for a 9 Euro bottle - wish I'd bought some more.

Sodden cork broke on extraction. Beautiful colour - serious bricking. Tart nose overlaid with mushrooms. On the palate, reductive notes (surprising given the state of the cork) combine with a mushroomy-gaminess, somewhat redeemed by brisk acidity. Most of the reductiveness seems to blow off after 30 minutes, after which we find we are drinking an old wine - albeit one with considerable breeding, and which once boasted a formidable fruit presence – that is surely some way past its best. Extremely interesting nonetheless.

A captivating high-toned nose of cherries and violets gives way to a palate of red fruits, tightly framed, with just a touch of something vegetal in the bass register, all delivered with a lovely core of juicy acidity. Drinking well now but promises more as it evolves in bottle.

No note taken, but the wine showed very well, drank pretty much straight from the bottle, and held up for 2-3 hours without noticeable fade, although the fabled Margaux perfume did blow off within half an hour. I would happily hold for another year or two.

I don't quite get this wine. It acts the part, up to a point. The promising nose, evident structure, and occasional whiff of smoke and hint of cigar-box evokes Bordeaux . . . before the muscular fruit, assertive tannins, and that faint trace of burnt rubber arrive to locate the wine firmly in SA, leaving a feeling of slight disappointment. Evens out a little during the evening, but no great shakes, and I can't imagine that further bottle age will materially improve the experience.

Spiced fruitcake nose gives way to opulent palate of ripe fruit and tobacco with cedar notes. Very accessible in a modern way, with much expensive oak in evidence, yet not oppressively so. Some heat on the finish. Overall an enjoyable and well made if not overly complex wine that will gain in interest with some bottle age.

High toned nose of red fruits. On the palate, sour cherry and just the beginning of a mushroomy bloom, with ample acidity and some bitterness. The tannins are nowhere near fully resolved and the alcohol is intrusive and noticeably hot. Finish is long and sour-sweet. After an hour and a half things are beginning to come into better balance; on this showing, will improve for another 3-5 years.

As I down my last bottle of this old favourite I have to conclude that this wine has outlived all expectations. It is still delivering gobfuls of almost burgundian sour cherry with rustic abandon, but the simple primary flavours have evolved into something altogether more chewy and fungal. Who'd have thought it would last this long?

Deep purple robe. Amazingly ripe nose of spiced red fruit. On the palate, a delicious balance between sweet berry fruit and an almost Burgundian sour cherry note. Good mid palate and decent 30-second finish. Hard to imagine this getting any better.

Nose of fresh strawberries. On the palate, a little thin and light-fruited, as if the grapes were struggling to ripen at this latitude. This impression is given weight by the very high acidity; nonetheless this is a delicate and nicely textured wine that goes well with fatty food.

Light bricking on rim to deep ruby red centre. After a three-hour decant from a cold cellar the nose opens to reveal scents of briar rose and smoky tea. A focused palate comprising layers of super ripe, dried fruit with a shot of juicy acidity that will keep it going for years is held together by a robust structure of maturing - but still evident - tannins. Coming into balance, but not quite there yet, this is a wine of some refinement, whose long, long finish made it an outstanding accompaniment to a roast leg of lamb.

A nose of quince and grapefruit gives way to tropical fruits on the palate underpinned by a stony minerality that takes a little time in the glass to make itself felt. With time, more evolved notes - of olives, nuts - begin to emerge. Mouthfeel is suitably viscous, while a zippy line of acidity keeps the whole thing in balance. I had thought this wine had peaked two years ago, but it's holding up brilliantly and at this rate should last till the end of the decade.

Drank my last bottle of this extraordinary curio last night at Sue's party. I can only imagine the weather conditions that gave rise to a vin de glace with this level of searing acidity, one where merely nosing the wine is enough to make you wince. The familiar palate - half grapefruit, half truffle - reminded me that I once had a bottle, very successfully, with a risotto ai funghi porcini, and there aren't many white wines you could say that about.

The last bottle of this great, over-performing, villages Vosne was the best of the lot: a softly persistent nose of raspberry leads to layers of delicate sour cherry fruit around a core of sweetness, with silky evolved tannins and juicy acidity. Farewell then, old friend.

Gorgeous, evolved Macon, with bags of fruit, creamy smooth texture, superb minerality, and a redeeming streak of acidity. This tenth bottle in two years shows no signs of levelling off, and promises at least another year of development, although I doubt my supplies will last that long.
