Dinner at Bida Manda. From 375ml. Dark orange is the theme here - both in color and in flavors with navel oranges, apricots and golden raisins. This was mixed with Rotenberg red clay on the nose. Some eucalyptus on the palate. Excellent acidity to wash the sweetness off the palate. Relatively low level of sweetness for an SGN but very well balanced. Not mature but not tasting young either. A beautiful expression of terroir and a joy to drink. 50+13+14+9+9=95

Dinner at Bida Manda. Every bit as good as the bottle of this we had at this restaurant about a month ago. Hauntingly beautiful in its expression of the Goldert terroir. At peak? Yes but still another decade of excellent drinking ahead. It will be interesting to see if any more Goldert florality is able to come out. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5=97

Easter dinner at Alan & Lehna's house. A beautiful match to Lehna's wonderful brown sugar glazed ham ( my first ham ) this wine made me think what I usua think when I drink a ZH Rotenberg - why don't we cellar and drink more Rotenberg. A subdued sense of sweetness due to a very clean and crisp sense of acidity that cut through the full bodied wine and quickly cleared the sweetness off the palate. Full of yellow fruits and the Rotenberg signature from its red clay origins. An excellent wine drinking an pointe now but with no risk of heading downhill for at least another 10-15 years. 50+14+14+9+9=96

Easter dinner at Alan & Lehna's house. Dark Amber in color, this wine was very good but also somewhat disappointing. Not as much sweetness as I expected for a #12 and also relatively low in acidity. Figs and molasses in a medium bodied package with a relatively short finish. Not cloying but just a little flat. Hopefully just bottle variation and the next one will be better. 50+12+11+7+7=87

1st Seder. Deep orange in color and quite a treat. A beautiful marriage of Rangen terroir without it dominating the wine the way Rangen can. Full bodied and bursting with aromas and flavors of minerality, peat, orange and kumquat amongst others. Very long on the finish. Outstanding today but possible upside potential still to come. Even Eliyahu finished his cup! 50+14+13+9+9=95(+?)

Dinner at Brasa, Raleigh, NC. I'm very fortunate to have a wife with great taste and knowledge of wine. Going to a Brazilian steakhouse we knew the meal would be mostly red meat. Having a primarily white cellar this some times causes a lot of extra thought on what to open. Dena says either Chave or Bonneau when I ask her. I know we're guaranteed a winner and after some discussion we decide on the '88 Chave. Terrific fill level and the cork comes out looking closer to a 2 year old bottle than a 27 year old bottle ( I know it's legit as it's from a 6 pack I bought over a decade ago before prices soared on Chave and fakes became a concern). Beautiful ruby with virtually no bricking. Loaded with cherries, raspberries, minerality and smoke - classic Chave. Tasting on the young side but the tannins have almost all melted away just leaving deep and concentrated fruit. Long fruity finish. A really great bottle. I had to laugh as our waiter was in training and had an " experienced" waiter with him. You could tell that the so called experienced waiter knew nothing about wine, which is fine, but tried to come off as an expert when opening the bottle while at the same time seeming to have an attitude that people bringing their own wine were just being cheap not trying to have a great aged bottle. He was quickly shown up by the waiter in training who spent some time in the wine business and said "the '88 should be great right now. I'd highly recommend the house special picanya". A great bottle. Well stored bottles should keep drinking well for at least a decade. 50+14+15+9.5+9.5=98

From 375ml. Depressed cork and low fill level. Cork mostly soaked through but not 100%. A little bit of Gewurz typicity on the nose but then flat and a little bitter on the palate and very short finish. Hopefully just a compromised bottle as I have a few more. Not rated.

Dinner at Bida Manda, Raleigh, NC with Alan & Lehna. Dark amber in color, age has treated this wine extremely well. Truly the essence of the Goldert terroir with a heavily perfumed floral nose and palate that reminded me of the '71 ZH Goldert Muscat we had in June, 2004 more than any other bottle from Goldert I've had since. Lightly sweet and still carrying good acidity. Not much of the spice side of Gewurz but the floral aspects along with acacia honey made for a tremendous wine that was the perfect match with every dish we ordered from this wonderful Laotian restaurant. 50+15+14+9+9.5=97.5

Dinner at Bolt. Orange in color, this is an extremely unctuous wine that rode the line of becoming cloying a little too closely until we chilled the wine a little and it was no longer near being a cloying wine. Full bodied and clearly Semillion which I don't tend to usually enjoy but this was very good but not great. 50+13+13+8+8=92

Dinner at Bolt. Still impenetrable purple in color. No doubt this is from California as it is a massive fruit bomb yet it has an old world elegance to it. Black plums, vanilla bean, cassis and blackberries. Very full bodied with an extremely long spicy finish. Continued to open and expand its flavor profile throughout dinner. Drinking perfectly today but should continue to do so for at 15 more years. 50+14+15+9+9.5=97.5

After dinner at Osteria in Greensboro,NC with Steve & Barb back at their house. Dena wanted to open one of these extremely tall 500ml bottles that were released in an outer canister like one you would use for a poster or blueprints. Likely the tallest non-magnum in the cellar which says a lot given our love of Alsatian and German wines! Still a dark impenetrable purple that stains the glass, tongue and teeth. A big wine to be sure that wouldn't be confused with coming from anywhere but the land down under. Despite being big it hand an elegance and beautiful balance as well. Sweet but in no cloying and not at all hot from the high alcohol. Tannins. Seem t.o have mostly shed while the fruit has remained intact perfectly. A beautiful way to end the evening. 13+14+9+9=95

Dinner at Osteria in Greensboro,NC with Steve & Barb. AP#26-94. Medium gold in the glass I knew this would be drinking well but just how delicious it was amazed all 4 of us. Delicate in nature with tons of minerality and richness. The richness gave way a somewhat round palate that was not slightly sweet but in beautiful balance. Pink grapefruit-like acidity and a medium length finish. One of those rare bottles caught at exactly the right moment. I think it will drink this way for another 5 years. Stunning and absolutely perfect match for Dena's starter of salmon carpaccio with a strawberry kiwi relish and mango sauce. Being me I couldn't resist the wild boar Ragusa over house made pasta. Not a great match buts both the food and wine were excellent. Only fault was that I would have liked to see a longer and more complex finish. 14+14+8+9=95.

With cheese at Steve & Barb's house before going out to dinner. Pale yellow in color and surprisingly it has not yet shut down. Drinking very nicely at the moment with a little more roundness than the Sec bottlings from Huet usually have. Pears and a little wool and lanolin. Very citric in its acidity. I would expect this to shut down soon but emerge as a great Sec. 50+12+12+8+8=90+

Still such a baby but I've had my mind fixated on checking in on this wine for about 2 months now. Classic 2005 ZH with a great mixture of vineyard terroir ( smokiness ), Gewurz typical spiciness and rose water and all the telltale signs of 2005 with a tremendous richness and amazing depth. The layers of flavors/fruit that I discussed when first trying the '05s are just beginning to reveal themselves but there is still plenty hiding under the surface in reserve for future development. Amazing today and most likely mind boggling in a decade or two ( or three! ). Another stunner from Olivier! 50+14+14+9+9=96(+)

From 375ml. AP#20-03. The nose is almost all pink grapefruit which then disappears until it makes another appearance on the back palate along with lychees. Very tropical palate loaded with papaya, mango, pineapple ,honey and lemon. The honey and pink grapefruit dominate the long finish. Thick but just enough acidity to stay away from cloying. Drinking beautifully today, possibly at its apogee, but with several more years of great drinking ahead. 50+13+13.5+8.5+8.5=93.5

Dinner at Sushi One. AP #10-89. Label says "Der Grosse Ring". Is this an auction bottling? Medium to dark gold colored in the glass this bottle gave the waitstaff quite an issue to open. Classic Prum WS Spatlese with green apples tossing in aromas, flavors and acidity mixed with excellent minerality. Light and delicate yet rich at the same time - very Prum like with mild sweetness. Based on this bottle the wine seems to be at peak but did the troublesome cork contribute to this? Hard to say how long this one will remain at it's currently wonderful drinking plateau. Dena says 5 years but I think 10 easy. Only downside was a relatively short finish. 50+13+13+7+8=91
