Sonoma Valley Red Rhone Blend more

A bit too gritty upon opening, but it paired well with blue cheese. Then it started becoming increasingly sour 15 minutes in, which I personally found quite refreshing -- almost a palate cleanser. It then gets more acidic 2 hours later, while still remaining approachable enough to drink without food; paired nicely with a Davidoff Nicaraguan cigar actually.
14.9% ABV, which was surprisingly seamless.

2006 Herman Story Syrah Nuts and Bolts

Santa Barbara County more

7/4/2015 - joraesque wrote: NR

Much leaner than when released, with an almost Shiraz-like nose of herbs, sweaty leather, and violets; starts off with strong notes of bitter cherries and licorice on the palate. Dusty notes soon also appear on the nose, and a smoky element on the backpalate provides an additional layer to contemplate.
After two hours the wine finally comes together structure-wise, as well as it can given its age, and while still hot it's got measured tannins that make for a silky mouthfeel.
Decisively past its prime nevertheless.

Bought this from winebid.com. Similarly to other Winebid purchases this also seems to have been stored in less than optimal conditions and is thus decisively past its prime.
Seemed overly acidic at first, but it smoothened out after 15 minutes and held up for 90+ minutes.
Decent structure, dying tannins showing just a bit of grip, and an overall plummy mouthfeel.

1987 Krohn Porto Colheita

Port Blend more

6/26/2015 - joraesque wrote: 90 points

My first Colheita. Seamless integration of the 20% alcohol. Easy drinking. Notes of caramel, salt, and nuts (including the aforementioned bitter almonds). I was left slightly impressed and certainly satisfied. They claim it pairs well with a good cigar, but it was overpowered by a medium-full, smooth stogie (Savinelli's 20th Anniversary) -- probably better with a (mild-medium) Cuban.

Notes of limes, Alka Selzer, green apple, and a little sweet mint. More like a feinherb than a Spatlase, and therefore better with a lighter, herb-based dish than a spicy one. A terribly quaffable white at room temperature, even though it's on a downhill slope. Drink by 2016. 11.5% ABV.

Drinking amazingly well for a(n almost) 30-year-old entry-level Merlot bottling. Notes of dust and sour plums initially, then cedar on the nose after one hour. Paired very well with tri-tip. Drank well for 2+ hours. 12.8% ABV.
A wine that will give most 1985 NorCal Cabs a run for the money.

Strong notes of violets on the nose followed over time by some Cabernet Franc-like dustiness. Medium-full body, fleshy, with round tannins and medium-high acidity. There is initially a strong ferrous mineral undercurrent on the palate that is joined by some notes of dust and bell pepper; then notes of violets become more noticeable over time together with some blueberry jam sweetness and perhaps a hint of leather (which is probably what my girlfriend associated with "funkiness") -- so this is perhaps somewhat like a fleshy Chinon mixed in with a little Malbec...
A very quaffable and versatile red which would go excellently with a Zuni chicken (http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015770-zuni-cafe-chicken), or -- and here's a twist -- with a dish involving red pepper flakes. A true steal in France where apparently it retails for under $10!
12.5% ABV.

Light-to-medium body with notes of soy, leather, and Amaretto, and hints of dust. Medium+ acidity according to my palate but too high according to my girlfriend's. Over time I found it developed some pronounced brambly sweetness, which seems to be common with lighter-bodied Argentinian Malbecs, and which I personally find a bit nauseating. A very solid effort nevertheless, clocking at 13.8% ABV. Drank well for 3+ hours.

Seemed a bit fatigued at first, and definitely not too easy of a food pairing, but I really started enjoying it on its own after an hour as it began shedding some of its more harsh edges without breaking down in spite of its low acidity levels. Really, this was terribly quaffable an hour in, with soft, medium-long layers that made me think of a good Northern Rhone Syrah-wanna be Grenache... There is also little to absolutely no heat in spite of the (ridiculous?) 15.8% stated ABV. Quite outstanding all in all.

A slightly different Machrie Moor than the last one (Second Edition) I've had. More full-bodied, exhibiting less pronounced citrus and a tad more sweetness as well as stronger salinity especially through the long finish. The peat is still strong on the nose, yet it's coming through as less flinty on the palate. Takes watering very well.

Not as fleshy (or flashy) as I was expecting; lighter-bodied and more feminine than my idea of a Bandol style red. Excellent fruit, with a profile which is rather linear right now; seemed to reach the sweet spot 30 minutes in, revealing lime salt and white pepper on the nose, some very faint lavender mixed in with the rather shy, mineral, Mourvedre-driven palate, and olive juice notes on the finish. Best with food but also very quaffable on its own, albeit showing very little complexity at this early stage other than perhaps on the finish.

Disappointingly past its prime... opens up with sweet fruit that morphs into black olive tepanade after 30 minutes, then into bitter charcoal notes, and finally it begins heading downhill -- slowly-- only 150 minutes in. I'd say drink 'em if you've got 'em.

Great Riesling, made in a Spätlese style but a bit leaner, a few years past its prime yet still holding up well over 3+ days vacuum corked in the fridge. Has a bit of plastic and marshland peat on the nose as well as relatively strong notes of aged sherry, grappa, and hints of herbs; a long undercurrent of citrus rind on the palate with flavors of Gala apples, hints of white tea, and, again, some grappa notes; finishes dry, with notes of saline-driven Manzanilla, some oak, and a dash of sweetness on the aftertaste. Enjoyed this best served just slightly chilled. 11% ABV.

Really dry, in needs of air; excellent tannins that needed to open up, so I poured it in a decanter for 30 minutes. Started opening up an hour in and was best between 1 and 2 hours, after which it began breaking down slowly. Great pairing with Merguez sausage. The 50% Carignan is the main attraction of this 5-varietal blend (with the 25% Cabernet Sauvignon providing excellent structure, and the remaining 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and 7% Malbec additional, albeit subdued, layers). 14% ABV.

Best at warm temperature, exhibiting notes of lime, citrus, salt and faint herbs, refreshingly dry yet not abrasively bone-dry. After 30+ minutes it also began developing some petrol notes on the nose alongside the quince skin bouquet. Terribly quaffable, with a strong mineral core, and a short-to-medium saline finish. And an outstanding QPR. 13.5% ABV.

Medium-full body with some glycerin. Notes of dark cherries and dust at first. Opened up over time, revealing more dusty earth, then sweaty leather. Seemed to reach its peak about 45 minutes in, then it started disintegrating slowly 60 minutes in, seemingly hotter and exhibiting a thinner, medium profile marked by notes of violets and hay, resembling really more of a Southern Rhone. 13.5% ABV.
Should be in its prime in 2016.
