1996 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne (France, Champagne) 2/2/2010sandwich92

Everything I read about the 1996 Taittinger lead me to believe that it would be good - and it was. I was told if it were served at exactly 8 degrees celsius an experienced connoisseur would be able to taste "candied berry, lemon zest and mineral flavors" but unfortunately I only tasted two of those three flavors. Which two? I will not divulge. Why not all three? I do not know. Why a 92 rating? Because 93 would be too generous and 91 would not be generous enough. (1733 views)

1997 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate (USA, California, Napa Valley) 2/2/2010sandwich96

Wine critics, wine tasters, wine drinkers, wine lovers and alcoholics alike, will all agree that Mr. and Mrs. Montelena have cemented their places in the "Glorious Grape Hall of Fame" with their 1997 estate offering. Cabernet Sauvignon, occassionaly referred to as the majestic grape, is the heart and soul of this wine. With aromas of cabernet, this wine offers a subtle yet balanced taste of acidic grape and some mellow tannins. I would drink this wine as frequently as a benevelent friend will bestow one upon me as a gift. This is cleary the WOTN whenevener opened beside no other. I rate this a 96 because a 95 wouldn't do it justice. (3607 views)

1988 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cabernet Franc Alzero (Italy, Veneto, Vino da Tavola) 1/28/2010sandwich96

Giuseppe did it again!! This 100% cabernet franc marvel is showing longevity and vibrance. This gem has at least 15 years of life and much like the Albanian diva Francesca Della Lana this gets better with age. It is a shame the Giuseppe's offspring care more about reducing the carbon footprint of the vineyard then they do with making handcrafted wines that drink effortlessly for years. The Alzero was more similar to a fine port or madeira than to an aged cab franc which only typifies Quintarelli's genious. At 96 points this was the WOTN at the "Third Avenue Basta Pasta" tasting event in January 2010. (381 views)

1985 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Gran Reserva (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) 1/28/2010sandwich93

A glorious effort from one of the most scandal ridden producers on the Iberian Peninsula. The Baroness Vinicola has thoroughly redeemed herself with the 1985 vintage, erasing years of sex scandals, tainted wines, and communist rallies. This was clearly the WOTN at the 2010 “Hola Rioja” Festival in Trenton NJ. (370 views)

2000 Château Cos d'Estournel (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe) 1/28/2010sandwich95

Tobacco, cassis, and a slight hint of coffee. Decanted for exactly 73 minutes. This was the only bottle I opened last night, but it was definitely the WOTN. (4292 views)
