8/28/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 87 pointsAs mentioned below, buttered popcorn on the nose. It's not at all subtle, completely unmistakable. There is a nice sensation of acid and tropical fruit on the palate, but too much oak for me. Not my style, but I can see the qualities that others appreciate about it. |

8/27/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 94 pointsThis is an exceptional syrah. A wonderful nose with hints of pepper, berry, and a touch of chocolate. A wonderful balance of fruit and tannin on the palate. Really, everything from Kick Ranch is extraordinary - this is the essence of fine artisan wine. I have 5 left, will buy more at the "steal" price of $29.99 at K&L. |

8/27/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 94 pointsThe best word I can come up with this is "prodigious." It's a big, burly syrah with plenty of heft and alcohol. Lots of deep, rich, dark fruits. Enjoyed it, but also looking forward to what it will have to offer in the coming years. |

8/12/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 89 pointsPretty pleasantly surprised with this one given the other CT ratings and notes. Got a few interesting crystals on initial pour (crunch!). This is actually quite good. The only word I can come up with to decribe the nose is "lush". It's full, fruity (red berries?) but with a little heat. On the palate, however, the heat isn't really there. Instead there's almost fuzzy tannin, and a very extended finish with a mix of fruit and acid. This is pretty good stuff - happy to have 1 more bottle. |

6/14/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 96 pointsThis was outstanding. Decanted for 2 1/2 hours, which I think is a must because the last bottle which I popped and poured (not recommended!) was not nearly as good. This one had a beautiful nose of raspberries followed by a full and silky mouthfeel with super-rich berries and stone fruit - smooth tannins and strong but not overwhelming acidity. But the finish - that's what's amazing. A super-extended 90 second plus finish. Outstanding. Glad I have 1 more left. |

6/13/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 90 pointsIt is what it is - a well-aged, good quality California cabernet. Enjoyed it, but it's not a wine where I feel I need to run out and try to find some more. Good, but not distinctive. |

Rich fruit with nice medium tannin on the palate. Good length. Strongly prefer to the highly rated Ruston Napa cab |

5/23/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 84 pointsCan definitely perceive a hint of mint on the nose, which makes the wine distinctive and alluring. While there is ample fruit on the midpalate with a touch of chocolate, the finish is a bit like cough syrup. Its distinctive, but not in a good way - at least for me. |

A touch spicy on the finish. Very pleasant for a very modest price. I think this would make a spectacular match for a summertime BBQ with lots of grilled shrimp. Also second the recommendation re spicy Thai - that would work very well. |

2001 Kenwood Cabernet Sauvignon Artist SeriesSonoma Valley more |
5/5/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 83 pointsSorry to cast a pall on the increasing good cheer about this wine, but my bottle was just not good. On opening, tight as a drum, tasted like a super-tight chianti instead of an 8 year old, $60 bottle of California Cabernet. After an hour, and 3 runs through the venturi, I am beginning to detect some fruit on the nose and palate, but frankly you shouldn't have to work that hard to get any value out of a $60, 8 year old Cabernet. Kenwood should have skipped this vintage and sold the juice to Charles Shaw. *** UPDATED *** for those of you who have this in your cellar, what's written in previous reviews is true. As bad as this wine is the first night, it improves dramatically overnight. After 24 hours rest it is now a relatively decent cabernet. Still nowhere near worth the price or the trouble, though. I would open it, let it sit opened for a few hours, recork it, and try it again in 24 hours. |

4/28/2009 - 97edwardc wrote: 90 pointsI really enjoyed this. I have little experience with Bordeaux (wife hates them, so I don't get to drink them) but I think she would have liked this one. A little bit of aging has smoothed out the tannins that so often turn off my wife, and now I find nice, moderate cherry on the nose, and a smooth midpalate with nicely balanced fruit and tannin. |
