2013 Arnot-Roberts Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard

Santa Cruz Mountains more

Wow! Open but young, too young. Lots of sea breeze and minerality. Equal parts tropical and citrus nose, but way more citrus on the palate, including acidic cut. I need to hide my remaining bottles for a bit.

Mineraled citrus and apple, nice bead, very fresh and lively. I should have bought more of this one.

Good fill but leaky cork. Drinkable but clearly oxidized.

5/10/2015 - WST wrote: NR

Past its prime. Still drinkable and enjoyable; leather, cedar and mushroomy nose sans fruit. The palate's quite a bit fresher than the nose. Not dead by any means, but I would have enjoyed this much more five or ten years earlier.

Very nice, especially considering the fare. Likely at its apogee. Mature bdx nose of cherries and currant, leather and mushroomy earth, Light bodied, low alcohol, elegant.

I really like this wine. Both the texture and balance were striking. Densely citrus with a little tropical fruit in the background; freshness and acidity keep it bright. Crushed stone and saline minerality.

2011 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Compagni Portis

Sonoma Valley White Blend more

4/18/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

Wow, I found the perfect match for Indian food! (Too bad I'm eating a salmon croquette, but it works there too). This is an unexpectedly beautiful wine, all fragrant white flowers, tropical notes, oranges and lemons. It looks viscous but is medium-full bodied and elegant despite somewhat of a punch.
A bit of a tasting conundrum for me; is it a big wine or a graceful wine? Whatever it is, I need to stop passing on the Bedrock Blanc offerings.

This showed beautifully tonight. Very elegant, barely showing its age, not a thing out of place. No formal TN, but I liked it a lot.

Honeyed yellow fruit, citrus, and a dollop of lanolin. Nice acidic cut keeps it fresh. A fantastic close to the tasting.

1990 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses

4/15/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

Earthy cherry, peat, herbs, with scant brett late on the palate. Another beautiful wine which could have lasted many years more had we not emptied it on our Loire binge.

2010 Marc Plouzeau Touraine Ante Phylloxera Clos de Maulevrier

Of the three ungrafted Loire reds tonight, this was a close second to the Breton. Still neon fuschia. Beautiful red fruit plus a little greenness. This showed better a year ago, and we may have caught it in a little awkward phase. I'll lay my last bottle down for a few.

2013 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Franc de Pied

Fresh, pure and energetic, this outshined both the Baudry and Plouzeau Franc de Pieds (both of which were also great!). Clean red fruit, slight vegetal note late in the finish. So fun to drink.

2011 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Franc de Pied

4/16/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

Very nice bottle. I would have enjoyed it much more, but for it's companions which drank even better ('10 Plouzeau and '13 Breton own-rooted versions). Red fruit and flowers, a little green pepper. I believe this was the last vintage from these vines, and perhaps they were declining by that year.

2005 Stéphane Cossais Montlouis-sur-Loire Le Volagré

Chenin Blanc more

4/15/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

Atypically large scaled Montlouis. Despite the vintage, this is bone-dry. Highly viscous, with great cut to keep it exciting. A fantastic interpretation of Chenin. So sad he's gone.

Really beautiful. The years have smoothed the sharp edges, but it still has the muscadet verve, cut and minerality. I need to age more of these.

2013 Dirty and Rowdy Mourvedre FAMILIAR

California more

4/12/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

Wow, this is a wine that's easy to love. P&P. I have to throw away my preconceptions of the grape; this was unlike any Mourvèdre I've had from Provence or the Southern Rhone or any Monastrell from Spain. More Cru Bojo than Bandol. What stood out most is it's freshness, like a young Fluerie. Translucent faint ruby color, light-to-medium bodied, fresh raspberry, a little mourvedre funk. Impossible not to like; in fact, hard not to empty the glass too quickly.

2010 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos du Breuil

Chenin Blanc more

4/1/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

What a fantastic bottle. The '10 Chenin Blanc Sec's keep hitting the balls out of the park. Mixed sour citrus plus orange and ginger. Has both sharp cut plus a nice viscous mouth feel. No signs of age; this should be good for decades. I have a bit, but still wish I bought more. Best $18 bottle ever?

Followed two great bottles of Picq Chablis. Very dense, citrus with enough cut to please any acidophile. I liked this better last year, and will let my remaining bottles rest a while.

2007 Gilbert Picq & ses Fils Chablis Dessus La Carriere

Chardonnay more

4/1/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

This may be the best $22 white wine I've had. It followed a '10 Picq Vosgros. While this didn't have quite the density of it's younger Premier Cru brethren, it made of for it with complexity of age and verve. Gilbert Picq knows Chablis. Always up there with my favorites. I've never had a premox bottle, and in fact, have never had a bottle that wasn't spectacular.

4/1/2015 - WST Likes this wine: NR

I don't think I've had a Picq I didn't like. This was beautiful. GC density of fruit, but great cut/tension and saline/minerality. Much more rich than the next wine we opened ('07 Picq Dessus La Carriere), but clearly Chablis and very well done!

Gorgeous and clean Beau. Still young (or early middle-aged). Raspberries and dark fruit, licorice, herbs; limited tertiary notes, no barnyard visitors. None of the prunes nor BBQ sauce that has marred some bottles.
