2007 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

Chardonnay more

5/29/2015 - tantotinto wrote: 94 points

We had this at a restaurant tonight. It was our first Raveneau. What struck me most was the creamy texture, the chalk and the nutty notes in the finish. Tantalizing aroma but more complex and compelling on the palate. It was decanted and consumed over two hours and got better with time.

This is exceptional. I had the 1985 at a restaurant and loved it. That vintage was unavailable at retail but found the 1983. For me it is better than the 1985 although it is hard to know the provenance of the restaurant glass. Almost black. Viscous on pouring. Nose of molasses, dark chocolate and espresso. Add dried dates, burnt caramel and burnt orange rind on the palate. Good acidity and very long. Finished the bottle a week after opening and it was still excellent.

South Australia Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more

Only our second Bin 389 after a 2010 a couple of weeks ago. This is a different wine. Whether it is the vintage or the time in bottle I do not know. The 2010 seemed like a spicy and relatively lean Napa Cab. This wine seems like a robust Southern Rhone. It's leaner and more acidic and herbaceous than the 2010. It is a coin flip for me. I like both and scored them the same. My wife prefers the 2012.

I taste the lemon, hazelnut, flint, limestone and acidity of Burgundy but it is a touch plumper and more tropical. After an hour or two of air there is a little butterscotch and cinnamon. Similar to some of the best Chardonnay from the California Central Coast....but better in my opinion. Vintage after vintage and bottle after bottle my favorite new world Chardonnay. Excellent and a great match this evening for maple-glazed grilled pork chops.

Our last bottle. It has clearly mellowed and improved over the ten years but I am not sure it has improved enough to justify the implied cost of sitting on it for this long. It is a winner tonight though.

Our first bottle of Bin 389. Smells big and boisterous with a floral component. Full and rich on the palate as well but far from over the top. Blackberry, cherry, anise, spice and mocha with a touch of pepper on the finish. Plenty of tannins but they are well integrated. Great acidity. Reminds me a bit of a spicy Caymus in one of its less plump years. My wife and I both loved it. Not inexpensive but an excellent value nonetheless. Will buy more.

4/19/2015 - tantotinto wrote: 88 points

It has taken me awhile but I have come to the unmistakeable conclusion that 2012 was not the best of vintages at Booker. Thiis bottle was acceptable but unremarkable and over priced, a theme running through nearly all of their wines that I have opened from that vintage. I have had too many great bottles from them to not still be a fan but tonight was yet another let down from 2012.

Very aromatic. Grapefruit, flint, peach and ginger. Tart, crisp and refreshing on the palate where there is more lemon than grapefruit. Medium to light in texture and body. Seems a touch sharper than the 2014. Very good anytime but will be a superb sipper in the heat of the summer.

2008 E. Fuligni (Cottimelli) Brunello di Montalcino

Sangiovese more

4/12/2015 - tantotinto wrote: 88 points

Starts with an appealing dusty cherry and dried herb nose. It is not as generous on the palate but rather tart and lean with only modest fruit showing. I am not experienced enough with Brunello to know if better days lie ahead. At this point, it has a long way to go to be worth what I paid for it. We paired this with Chicken Parmigiana. Time in glass and the food improved the wine.

A very good Chardonnay that we consumed side by side last night with an excellent white Burgundy. It held its own very well. Medium weight and texture. It had a pleasant cinnamon spicieness, good minerality and a tart finish. A bargain as well as it compared favorably with but was less than half the price of the French bottle.

Decanted for two hours before tasting. Luscious nose of ripe cherry, garigue and anise. Similar flavor. Smooth and elegant for a CdR. Not the slightest whiff of rustic peasant swill here. This is a very refined wine with a superb QPR. First vintage of the Coudoulet that I have tasted and, based on the 2011, it deserves a try every year from now on. A marvelous Cotes du Rhone. We paired this with grilled lamb chops and a mint chimichurri sauce and it was an excellent match.

The more wine I drink the more I notice variations from bottle to bottle. Hard to tell from night to night if it is in the bottle, my palate or both. The last bottle of this wine was a bit more oaky than those past. Not so tonight. Tonight it tastes of fresh blackberry, tobacco and a touch of pepper. It is leaner than previous bottles and the oak is well integrated. Excellent.
