2000 Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice

Sangiovese more

2/11/2016 - Eric Guido wrote: 95 points

How do you define a wine such as this? The descriptors could go on for a page, but what I believe truly define the Occhio di Pernice is its contrasts of sweet versus savory, heavy versus weightless and it’s unbelievably long finish. The color is a dark amber, more like a long aged Balsamico, than Vin Santo. Twirl the glass and watch as this elixir slowly melts away from the edges. You can’t call these legs—as the wine coats the glass in a layer of dark maple that never truly goes away. I put my nose to the glass and find long-aged cherry Balsamico, raw honey, espresso, fig paste, brown sugar, caramel—I could keep going. On the palate, it has the weight of syrup, yet seems to become weightless as this coats the senses and saturates them with notes of toffee, fig, raisin and maple. Yet there’s a savory note here, like smoked meat with an intense minerality and hints of tannin. As for the finish, I was moved to blurt out the word “WOW”, as notes of coffee, dark chocolate, spice and dried cherry seemed to linger for well over a minute.

The nose showed gorgeous citrus tones followed by fresh grass, white flowers, and hints of vanilla. On the palate, it was youthfully dense with rich fruit textures and playful acidity. Notes of grapefruit, citrus rind, apple and sweet herbs all came together with the Lillie’s soft textures. The finish was long with herbal tones and citrus prevailing. The best part is that through all of this youthful energy and fruit, there’s more to come with time in the cellar.

2011 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc

2/8/2016 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NR

The Bric del Fiasc is quite closed today, as one might expect from such a young Barolo. The nose showed dark fruits and minerals with a hint of floral rose. On the palate, tart red fruits were accentuated by lively young tannin along with hints of mineral and spice. It finished on dark fruits and smoke, with inner floral tones providing lift. Knowing the power of Bric del Fiasc first hand, I can only image that this wines has gone into a stage of dormancy, but I have no doubt that it will emerge into something quite nice.

What an incredible bouquet on the Scavino Monvigliero, here I found lifted red fruits, pine nettle, rose, sweet herbs and hints of orange peel. The longer it sat in the glass, the richer and sweeter its aromas seemed to become. On the palate, rich dark red fruits were ushered in by silky-weighted textures, followed by mineral and herbal tones. Fine tannin coated the senses throughout the finish as notes of dried red fruits lasted long.

The 2011 Via Nuova is a classic effort in every senses of the word. I was met by a display of dark red fruits, roses, animal musk, brown spice and undergrowth. On the palate, I found beautifully contrasted textures, both silky and vibrant, as notes of rich strawberry, plum, and savory spice mingled with earth and mineral tones. It finished on fine tannin, dried fruits and inner florals. This is a gorgeous wine that has improved in bottle over the last year.

2011 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Mosconi

2/8/2016 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 94 points

Chiara Boschis has made quite a testament to the Mosconi cru in the three short vintages leading up to 2011. Here I found an inviting display of earth, dark floral tones and undergrowth first, followed by rich red fruits and floral tones. On the palate, I found dark, center-focused textures ushering in a wave of blackberry, cherry, minerals and violet floral tones. All was kept firmly in check by a coating of fine tannin and brisk acidity, which played a push and pull of austerity versus mouthwatering freshness. The end result was quite attractive.

The nose was dark and brooding, showing black cherry, dusty spice, and savory herbs. On the palate, it took a turn to the feminine side, as pretty inner floral and bright cherry tones came together with sweet herbs to create an unexpectedly brilliant and vibrant display of Cannubi fruit. It finished with a coating of fine tannin, tart berry and minerals. I was expecting a beast of a wine, and what I found was a beautiful purebred.

It started sweet on the nose, with an initial wave of heat, which quickly blew off as it continued to evolve in the glass. A mix of dried cherries, hints of brown sugar, truffle, undergrowth, crushed fall leaves and minerals evolved in the glass. On the palate, it was medium bodied, with prominent minerality, and inner dried floral and earth tones. It finished with medium length and lingering minerality, earth and dried flowers. This is mature, but well stored bottles should continue to live on for many years.

On the nose this displayed blackberry, savory herbs, pepper, and wild floral tones. It was medium-bodied on the palate and deceptively feminine with wild berry fruit, herbs, inner floral tones and hints of pepper. Structured red fruits and fine tannin defined the finish, yet also promised very good things to come. Pure, focused and lifted, the ’08 San Leonardo is a classic in the making.

The nose showed an intense and concentrated display of black cherry, strawberry, smoke, savory spice, rosy floral tones and minerals. It was focused on the palate, yet also quite youthful as notes of intense dried cherry, spice and leather saturated the senses. On the finish, I found palate coating tannins with wild berry fruit and lasting inner floral tones. There were no Riservas this year and the 2012 greatly benefits from the added complexity.

2013 Dominus Estate

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/6/2016 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 97 points

It’s hard to bend my brain around the 2013 Dominus at this time, as there’s so much going on, and it’s so primary and densely packed, that the best anyone can be expected to do is imagine how amazing this will be as all the pieces fall into place. The nose was a multi-layered display of blackberry, black cherry, plum, sweet herbs, hints of tobacco and crushed stone. On the palate, it was dark yet perfectly polished, with dense, silky textures saturating the senses in dark fruits with hints of licorice and herbs. It’s saturating black fruits coated the palate throughout the finish with a tinge of minerality and dark floral tones. There is so much potential here, but it will take years before we can really understand it. In other words, it may be deserving of a higher score down the road.

The nose showed ripe red and black berries, hints of savory herbs, minerals and fresh floral tones. With time in the glass, it seemed to turn sweeter and rich, yet all the while remaining bright and energetic. Silky, palate-coating textures soothed the senses as notes of dark red fruit and sweet herbs washed across the senses. It finished on lingering dark fruits, hints of bitters and inner floral tones. This is already accessible today, but it should continue to improve for a decade. It’s amazing to think that the 2013 Napanook is a second wine. Wow!

The 2009 Dominus is like a ball of pent up energy, waiting to explode. The nose was dark and polished, yet with remarkable freshness to its mix of raspberry and blackberry fruit. Hints of tobacco added depth. On the palate, it was dense with intense dark fruits followed by lifting inner floral notes. The finish was long, dark and saturating to the senses. There’s so much more here that’s buried beneath this wine’s youthful state. It’s a sleeper wine.
