9/5/2009 - jfagan wrote: 91 pointsNo sediment on decanting. Light color, clear rim. Lovely spiced cherry nose with complimentary sweet and savory spices--all very well integrated and harmonious. Sweet fruit entry with crushed black cherry, plum, sweet spice and oak. Nice viscous texture. Tannins are subdued and the acidity is just adequate. The finish is warm and satisfying. Showstopper aromatics earn this high marks. 91 points. Drink now-2012. |

8/9/2009 - jfagan wrote: 90 pointsTasted from the decanter--light, bright color. Closely held nose. Tart, bright, firm, light flavors. Two hours later--light color, clear miniscus. Firm aromas of red fruit, cranberry, spice and smoke. Dry and tart on entry while still showing a youthfully undeveloped fruit core. Light, pretty and still a bit too young, this should reward a few more years in the cellar but may never rise to the podium. 90 may be generous. Driink 2009-2012. |

8/8/2009 - jfagan wrote: 94 pointsVery little sediment on decanting. Tasted then--Rhone-like, rough, dry. Two hours later--what a change! Medium-deep color, clear edge. Nose has expanded to include sweet as well as savory elements, leather, smoke, dried flowers. Stunning nose! On the palate, powerful, muscular, and complex. Perfectly balanced with sweet/tart flavors of earthy fruit jams, black tea and spice that are long, rich and focused. Still gaining after 3 hours, this is a classic Calera and and a monumental American Pinot Noir. "Bags of vigour" Drink 2009-2017. |

7/25/2009 - jfagan wrote: 93 pointsFrom magnum. Tasted before decanting: bright, juicy, primary. Decanted 2 hours: Intense black and red fruit nose with tons of baking spices. Really nice aromatic focus. Lovely initial palate impression of ripe cherry compote, sweet silky texture driven by fresh acidity. New World for sure but little wood in evidence. Harmonious, long, fresh and delicious. 93 pts. Drink 2011-2016. |

7/23/2009 - jfagan wrote: 90 pointsDecanted 2 hours. Deep color with some brick dust at the edge. Strong aromatics of medicinal herbs, dried flowers, smoked meat and leather. Sweet, rich palate impression with balanced, well composed and rather powerful flavors. Fully absorbed tannins frame a precise, dry cherry-flavored finish. Although holding up better than several other recent '97 Tuscans, this should be drunk soon. Now - 2010. |

6/14/2009 - jfagan wrote: 91 pointsOpened for an hour and then decanted. No sediment. Vibrant color, reticent nose of well integrated sweet and savory spices with high-toned, bright red fruit notes. Soft entry, a harmonious mix of dry cherry and cola in a light, feminine framework with nice lift but little noticeable tannin--a delicate rather than fragile Pinot. Drink now through 2012. |

5/17/2009 - jfagan wrote: 91 pointsFresh color with just a hint of amber. Complex and harmonious nose of Asian spices, antique cedar chest and savory herbs. The flavors start off with tart cherry and even some citrus zest. Firm and focused with just enough silky fruit texture to keep it from being austere. The finish reveals well matured tannins and lively acidity. It took so long to come this far that I don't think it will "fall off the cliff" any time soon. Drink now through 2014. |

4/26/2009 - jfagan wrote: 89 pointsLast bottle from a great case bought on release. This has never failed to impress but is now just starting to show its age. The acid is getting just a bit edgy. I would say this has started to dry up. Drink up. |

4/26/2009 - jfagan wrote: 90 pointsThis was the last bottle from a glorious case where every bottle brought lots of pleasure. This was no different. Silky black fruit, saturated flavors. Sorry to see it end. I have some 1999 but that is another wine and another story. This has held up better than I thought a couple of years ago but I would suggest drinking it soon. |

3/15/2009 - jfagan wrote: 91 pointsDecanted for about an hour. Closed, woody, dry herbs. All the signs of a fading wine. I put the glass aside and moved on to something else. About two hours later I went back to the glass and was amazed at how the wine had changed! Fleshy black fruit, meaty, black plum flavors. I could not believe it was the same wine. I would be interested to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with this wine. When I open another bottle, I will treat it with more respect and pay better attention to it. |

2/15/2009 - jfagan wrote: 91 pointsThe bottle last week was mildly corked. This one is not. Decanted 2 hours the wine displayed a nose of licorice, road tar, and incense. No mistaking its Old World origin. Firm flavors offer a nice sweet/savory mix with tart cherries and exotic spices. With time the wines seems to change its flavor complextion from black to red and it seems to become more focused and narrow with a beam of red plum skin and bright acidity. I don't have much experience with these but my call would be to drink sooner rather than later. Now - 2012. |

Unusual medicinal nose with some licorice and incense. Tight, tart and brittle flavors offered little pleasure. It sweetened up a bit after three hours in the decanter but I can't believe this bottle was as it should be. I will try another one soon. |

11/16/2008 - jfagan wrote: 87 pointsI've been working my way through the '97 Napa Cabs I own. Fortunately, I did not get too caught up in the hype and didn't go too deep (or too high-end). This is certainly one of the better ones with maturing aromas of plums, cedar, and spice. Getting a bit light and thin on the palate, it finishes a bit dry. But all and all not a bad quaff particularly with chow. Drink 'em if you've got 'em. |

7/14/2008 - jfagan wrote: 95 pointsThis wine rocks, literally! First aromas upon decanting were of iron ore. After a couple of hours the deeply inbedded fruit starts to poke through with sappy black fruit, dried herbs and almost crystalline syrup. Bold but well mannered, primary still but not too tannic. Worth a taste now for a unique experience but this behemoth needs lots more time in the cellar. 2012-2025. |
