VTS fill. Capsule and cork in excellent condition. Not decanted. Clear deep blood-chestnut color. Upon pouring, the wine took a few minutes to emerge from deep slumber, then yielded a superb bouquet of red cherries, plums, and rhubarb; with notes of cedar, mushrooms, spices, and old leather gloves. Similar on the palate, rich and juicy, balanced, youthful. Delightful experience.

From 375 ml. Clear dark garnet color. Beautiful bright fresh bouquet of red and black fruit, incense, charcoal, crushed gravel, flowers, spice, sandalwood. Similar on the palate, balanced, seamless, generous, long finish. More like a Margaux-Napa hybrid than Graves. Seems at early maturity now, with several years of peak drinking ahead, and even longer for 750 ml.

Opinions were split on this wine. Several people thought it was corked, others liked it. Overall it was voted SECOND PLACE for the night. I thought it was a very enjoyable mature wine with plenty of red raspberries, cherries, and musty notes reminiscent of a stuffy attic in an old wood frame house, or perhaps an old wood-paneled library with mildewed leather-bound books. It was my #2 for the night but it seemed muted compared with a stellar bottle a few years ago, and so this bottle may indeed have some TCA taint.

Classic bouquet of cigar tobacco, cigar humidor, red currants, truffles, saddle leather, stony soil, hints of lilacs and roses. Similar on the palate, wonderfully balanced, seamless, silky smooth polished tannins. Aristocratic, refined, showing more complexity with each passing minute. This bottle seems to be at late maturity based on the predominance of cigars on the bouquet, with fruit clearly on the wane.

Has held up remarkably well in a passive cellar all these years.

Tasted at Spectrum pre-auction tasting in San Diego. Not decanted. Clear medium mahogany-chestnut-brick red color with coarse sediment in glass. Superb bouquet of red currants, cider, nutty sherry, spice box, cigar humidor, old leather, hints of shellac or varnish. A stunning example of a very old bordeaux that is very much alive.

I am not sure whether this bottle was designated a classico, a classico superiore, or a recioto, but it was probably the former. It showed a clear medium blood-ruby-mahogany-rust-brick red color. The bouquet suggested a blend of Amaretto and Grand Marnier without the alcoholic heat; along with hints of cloves, cinnamon, and sherry. Other than the red color, there were no aromas or flavors to suggest this liquid ever originated from red grapes. Nevertheless it was crisp, pure, vibrant, and thrilling to enjoy.
