A Fine frame and savory palate of juicy meat and berry, in the lightest of manners. Long and well-strewn, there is a lovely delicate quality that echoes. Drink 2017 - 2026.

2012 Sine Qua Non Grenache Stein

Central Coast more

7/27/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 100 points

I have been fortunate to have every Grenache from '01 and thru '11, and the '12, righteously named 'Stein', is absolutely the best. Decanted for three hours. Simply remarkable and perfect in every way, on every meridian. Tiramisu, garlic mashed potatoes, dried strawberry, garrigue, plum and lava. Exceptionally polished, endowed and balanced - squared. Exquisitely demure, then salacious and exceptional over time. Everything an ideal Grenache should be. This reminds me of the first movement from Mahler's Fourth by conducted by Reiner with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Drink 2018 - 2030.

2013 Landmark Pinot Noir

Santa Lucia Highlands more

7/27/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 94 points

Even more wondrous and designed for a longer haul, the Santa Lucia (white label) is undeniably more layered, rich and latent, showing the need to cellar. White chocolate covered blueberries, sandstone, black tea and dried cranberry, with lillies. Long and feathery. Drink 2017 - 2026.

2013 Landmark Vineyards Pinot Noir Escolle Road Vineyard

Santa Lucia Highlands more

Popped and left to open for three hours. A pillow on your palate; a focus of the utmost intent. Blueberry, plum sauce, polish, corrugated fiber and chocolate cake. So much expression and hubris in voice. Quite striking. Drink now - 2021.

1983 Château Rausan-Ségla

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/17/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 93 points

This was consumed in January of 2014...

See previous note. Porcini mushroom, leather, chocolate orchid and tobacco; what an amazingly mature finish. In '83 Margaux shined, and this was no exception. Nice and long, with a little tannin left. Drink now - 2020.

2010 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah Stonessence

Walla Walla Valley more

7/17/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 96 points

Consumed in December of 2013...

Decanted for three hours. Chiseled rock, raw meat, blueberry, dried raspberry and wet tea leaf. Long and magnificent, and lovely a full body. Voluptuous, yet fine curves. Animalistic, yet fruity. Such a drawn out finish. Evidently there is a panoply of flavor and nuance, make no mistake about it. Drink 2016 - 2025.

2012 Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Alexander Valley more

7/17/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 91 points

Decanted for two hours. I love the white chocolate, blackberry and black tea, ending with currant and pain grille. A long finish and a juicy core...I honestly see no reason to wait. How enjoyable and the silky tannins are at the vanguard. An obvious value. Drink now - 2020.

2010 Wilson Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Vineman

Dry Creek Valley more

7/17/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 90 points

An outstanding Cabernet with polish and poise. However, a serious decant is a must for immediate consumption, for this is big by design. The Dry Creek Cabernets can be a bit much at times - reminiscent of Paso Robles - and this is pushing the envelope, yet there is finesse; admittedly there's acidity. Black cherry, wet leather, currant paste and toasty oak; the medium finish ends with vanilla. She will cellar well for at least a decade. Drink 2017 - 2027.

Ripe and generous, then polished and velvety, the '13 Sta. Rita Hills does not disappoint. BBQd chicken, cranberry, sandstone, blueberry and turmeric. Long and quite persistent, with noticeable grip. Ideal now or over the next seven years. Drink 2015 - 2022.

Decanted for two hours. Concentrated and polished, this colossus of a vin could use a few more years, however, is quite long and evocative. Crushed rock, currant, lilies and fresh tobacco; very Graves in so many ways. Quite modern. Drink 2019 - 2034.

2011 Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon Hommage Artist Series Reserve

Napa Valley more

7/2/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 92 points

A darker, more garnet colour than the Napa Valley bottling. Dark chocolate, blackberry, toasted oak, freshly sawed wood, elderberry and cappuccino, with flower shop. A long finish that turns a little bitter at the end, however, that will fade over time. This was popped and poured, demonstrating the need for a true decant. Twenty months spent in 82% new French oak barrels. Drink 2018 - 2028.

2010 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard

Napa Valley more

7/1/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 95 points

I adore the tension and tradition within. Complex layers of dark berry fruit and spice, with some tobacco qualities as well. She was decanted for three hours. Such a long finish of fruit and raw meat, then there's a polished sheen. Absolutely adorable. Decant or wait a couple of years. Drink 2016 - 2031.

Decanted for two hours. Raw coconut, polished rock, currant and cedar. There is a salubrious plateau during the long, silky finish. I love the paradox of concentration and floating aspects. I would still wait a year or two. Drink 2017 - 2027.

Rich and layered; after a three hour decant, she is shining. Long and the tannins are quite silky, and really more concentrated than one would expect from the vintage. Gravel, elderberry, Hawthorne tea and vanilla bean. Surprising, yet it shouldn't be, with this being one of my favorite producers every vintage. Drink 2017 - 2036.

Russian River Valley more

6/24/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 94 points

One of the finest Petite Sirahs from Sonoma County, Foppiano, with their flagship bottling, do not disappoint. Black cherry, fresh tar, rose petal, honeyed cashews and blackberry. Very toned and sumptuous layers, with a velvety finish. Tannic, but still quite approachable: the wine regardless beckons the cellar. You can olnly procure this noir goddess at the tasting room or as a member of their wine club. Drink 2018 - 2033.

One word: voluptuous. Shaved coconut, blueberry pie, currant, gravel and black tea. Very similar to the '05, just more on every level. I see no reason to wait. Silky, layered and a rollicking display of fruit. Drink now - 2030.

2013 Wind Gap Wines Chardonnay James Berry

Central Coast more

6/12/2015 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 93 points

Such a tropical trampoline with a panoply of nuances that lead up to piña colada; there's also stone, Japanese pear and honey suckle; during the long finish I get some candied lemon curd. A stunning middle palate to be had and ultimately saddened by this being the last vintage. Such a shame... such an ideal Chardonnay for those hot summer days. Ideal with Mediterranean chicken. Drink now - 2020.
