Late picked; allegedly from Ridge's Monte Bello vineyard. It shows lots of sweet raisin fruit, both on the nose and the palate. Lacks acidity and the finish tails away somewhat. Should perhaps have been blended with the Sangiovese.

Very tight initially. Left it in the fridge for a few days and it opened up. Not bad at all for the price - give it cellar time or a long decant.

A little sweet for my tastes. Soft and fruity, not unpleasant but certainly not worth $35

Supposed to be a vin de paille so I expected something complex and sweet.
This is neither.
The nose is bland and slightly plastic.
On the palate it’s hot, dry, tannic and uninteresting.
None of us liked it.
Total waste of money at any price.
The sink drank it.

A half bottle with a damaged label. Couldn't read the vintage, but the fill looked good. The cork proved it was a 78.
A 42 year old new world Pinot in a half bottle made from 3 year old vines. Gotta be swill, hasn't it.

Wrong.

Absolutely lovely, perfectly balanced, great fruit. So many modern Pinots are flashy at first then fall apart. (You know what I'm talking about.) This was the real deal. Wow.

A ripe wine from an excellent vintage that's holding up well. It's still quite the fruit bomb; there's some residual sugar too - without the label you'd probably think it was a much younger wine from a warmer region.

Found it lurking in the K&L Hazerai bin. Even though Paso Zinfandels aren't famed for their ageability, this one's taken it harder than most.

Late picked, 14.9% alcohol, 5% Petite Sirah
Cork was in good condition and came out easily; despite corrosion around the capsule the fill level was well into the neck.
Good colour, between terracotta and garnet. Nose smelt musty which was a concern, but the wine was sound.
First impression was of acidity and lots of secondary flavours of leather and cedar, but after a couple of minutes the fruit came out.
The more Zinfandel ages, the more it resembles claret, and this was just like that. No sign of fading over the hour. Very good.

Pinot shouldn't taste like this. It's as if someone wasn't sure whether to make a super-ripe style Pinot or a port and ended up with the worst qualities of both.

Crappy Old Wines (Nazca Peruvian Restaurant, San Jose): Fairly simple; lots of sweet rasberry fruit which persists on the finish, but not much else going on. The acidity is decent. Another wine that doesn't show its true age.

Crappy Old Wines (Nazca Peruvian Restaurant, San Jose): Paul brought this out partly as a joke, expecting it to be undrinkable. It's a non-vintage wine from the early 1970s. Who knows what's in it; it was cheap stuff then.
The nose was porty and it had pruney flavours, but it wasn't anything like as bad as we anticipated.
