Big Mama, but Small B**bs.

This is a hefty wine, with a lofty oak treatment, but it is overly perfumed (like an elderly lady can be) and lacking layers, complexity and refinement.

Insanely too expensive for what it is.

Had with yakiniku in Tokyo.

However, it's a decent wine for what it is. A lot of sediment due to over extraction. Low acids. All in balance, but there is no depth. Surprisingly poor delivery.

5dan FAIL dinner: aiming at November! (Bisi-Basi, Yokohama): This is an amazing Bdx. Favourite btl of tonight and especially enjoyed by Suda sensei. Open for business after 3 hrs decant. Not at all as tight as the previous btl. However, we'd guess that ~2020 is the start of their plateau, according to our taste.
...but it's darn good as is!

Dark red w/bricking rim.
Nose is of orange peel, raspberries, Grenache, small herbal qualities (not La Garrige, more watercress) and ... faint jasmine flowers. Medium sized for a great wine and not particularily interesting.
Palate has some aggro acids and pronounced tannins, not quite zen. Fruit is über-polished and there is intensity, concentration, indication of maturity and tight fruit. (Had expected jam! But, not found in this btl.)

This is too polished to be interesting. Like a sand blasted statue where the features have almost completely faded away. Blinded, no chance I'd have put this in CdP. I'm not even sure I'd have been anywhere near Grenache...

Wife: 89-90p
At amazingly wonderful La Rochelle 'Sanno'. Only btl, could have rested some 5-10 more years.

Superb wine, and insanely well priced. This wine rocks!

Huge aroma of several dried fruits, a bit of burnt hair and nuts.
Smells sweet, is dry.
In the mouth this is amazing! Raisins racing with the nuts but the burnt aromas win all tropgies when it comes to endurance. Finish lasts for minutes! It's glorious! Layers of taste that are rather complex. The finish is mega long. Perfectly balanced acids and all parts of this wine come together in perfect harmony. Rich fruit and some indian curry and distinct cumin.

This is a wine to enjoy with anything tasty. Have had it with miso soup and it did well. With Cup Ramen (shrimp taste and chilli) and some fried chicken it made a perfect marriage. Drank it with sushi and that was ... I prefer other things with sushi. Another evening it divorced MacD burgers but married the MacD fries. This evening only a small glass left for a personal tasting event. Wanted cured ham and sausages, but that will be for the next encounter.

Does nothing good for wife: frowns only.

Only btl, sure to get more of these bottled gems.

Superbly polished, pure, young, full-bodied and TANNIC wine.

4 hrs decant.
Dark red.
Nose is pure-fruity, youthful, not particularly attractive, but intense.
Palate: Tannins are present, with a vengeance. The fruit is extremely polished, and there is nothing at all sticking out in this tight composition. All is in place. All kept tightly in place. Superb balance. We are hoping for more nuance and layers in 2025. (One btl to go.)

But, we dare say: with all its qualities, it is a rather boring wine in a VERY heavy btl. Wife: 87p.

Sunday dinner at superb organic Italian Restaurant: Bisi-Basi (Yokohama).

Still clinging to life. Advanced wine.

Golden colour.
Beautiful, large nose with restrained Diesling, mandorle amare, wet rocks and some herbs.
In the mouth, this is slightly geriatric and no walking up the mountain ever again. Possibly only falling down the mountain from now on. Benzaldehyde, long (thin) finish of oil paint, wet rocks and Riesling fruit. To our taste: Perfectly balanced acids-sugars. The herbal expression is distinct and insanely appealing.

8th and final btl: Bye-bye to an old friend.

As its own dessert after wife's cooking.

A solid Grenache wine with Rhône typicity.

Colour: dark red with slightly maturing brim.
Nose: non-descript shy Grenache aromas with herbal qualities. A very humble part of "La Garrigue."
Palate: with all the anticipation that comes from knowing what you will have and what so many others think... Our first impression was: total faceplant. But, this is a solid Grenache based wine. Not much more. And not showing much potential for the future either...

Terribly poor QPR.

One more btl, hoping and praying to Thor, Huitaca, Athena, Vishnu and the Flying Spaghetti-Monster for a complete makeover until 2021. Or, maybe we just got a poorer btl than you other guys...

Home dinner, wonderfully cooked WAGYU and giant green asparagus by wife (same wine score).

A beautifully mature Aglianico with still some beautiful years of life ahead.

Eye of the beholder: Dark red with slightly mature brim.
Nose: Started out with a lot of unpleasant odours, but they luckily blew away. Dark fruits and unrefined older signage.
Palate: Beautifully concentrated, intense wine that stands firm like a boulder. Not overly refined, with a coarse structure and rough tannins. But, balance is impeccable and its presence is marvellous. There is a restraint on the composition, and a subtle level of maturity is upon us.

After three days, the final glass, under a cork in room temperature:
Nose unbearably oxidized. But on the palate are now beautiful aromas of milk chocolate, leather, tea-leaves, La Garrigue and soft, red fruits. Tannins are now more to the point, and the whole structure is still coarse.

Glorious maturity with at least five more years on the plateau.

Wife's choice at Italian Rest: Antichi Sappore (Tokyo)

This is a plonk-priced jewel whenever you want a coarse red.

Eye: Dark red with a violet tinge.
Nose: Vibrant aromas of purple fruit. It also has a raw, deep-toned grape nuance that often young CS-wines has. The smell of ironing a shirt.
Palate: Edgy, youthful with aggressive acids, some tannins. Purple fruits and a mellowing mid-palate speaking of some maturity. Not everything into place, but a lot of wine for the money (USD6).

All in all, a great quaffer. Best with food.

Two bitter old gentlemen become gentle (Restaurant TANI, Tokyo): Upon opening.

Nose: Lavishly aromatic. Dark watermelon aromas and sporty male perfume towards Aqua di Gio. Decidedly fragrant and refined, however rather unusual from the wine POV. Wet cement and licorice as well.

Superbly balanced with M-body, laser-sharp +++ tannins, licorice galore and still very young. There are a lot of unrealized potentials just waiting to come out. Has enough umpa-umpa to develop for at least ten more years and live long after that.

After 5 hrs decant, the aromatics refined themselves towards dried leaves, some smoked meat and away with the perfume. Palate stayed tight (Som hos flickan från Gränna) throughout the evening and married all foods.

Two more btls to go, next one ~2025.

Two bitter old gentlemen become gentle (Restaurant TANI, Tokyo): Nose: Red berries, rosehips, violets and freshly cut cucumber. Toffee with chocolate-like overtones. Some faint watermelon as well.

Taste: Not completely balanced as acids kick in and take over too much. Other than that, a screamingly young, stable 91p wine upon opening and 94p as the evening went by. There was no layering at the get go but after some hours of proper treatment, it showed its BIG feet well. Have high hopes for this one for the future.

Compared to the other madly great Barolos tonight, this one performed as a significant but little bit bland wine.

2nd btl, only one more to go. Next one around 2025.

Two bitter old gentlemen become gentle (Restaurant TANI, Tokyo): Upon opening:
Nose: Amazing aroma that is enormous and enticing. Brown bananas and brown apples galore with a distinct feeling of a wet autumnal day. Soot, smoke, wet cement and no sight of violets. Still very young but not without interest.
Palate: Intense, elegant and powerful M-bodied, super fit martial artist. Mouth-coating with M+++ tannins. Fruit and M++ acids cooperating perfectly. Some rubbery aromas in the aftermath. Long and VERY satisfying.

Still pre-window according to our books, but DARN delicious.

It was tonight's best wine and at the restaurant had lost the mushy fruit aromas and steadied its autumnal expressions. Fabulous.

Four btls to go. Next one is post-2020 (if I can muster up some self-discipline).

Opened with high expectations and the nose is divine. On the palate, it's too elegant for our tastes.

Rich, appealing and mature Bdx nose with a thorough dose of Bdx earth, some beautiful Brett, and underlined barrels with red-brown berries and coffee notes.
On the palate, it underwhelmed because of a rather light body (we prefer more heft). It does come with a superb balance between fruit, acids and the cemented tannic backbone. Did well with starters, turnip, salad and the two fish plates but not as great with the fois gras and the meat plate.

Agree w/Wine-Strategies that this is ageing quite well and is at its early plateau and should develop some more maturity. Can become a rather pleasant wine for the contemplative spirit.

Dbl decanted for 4 hrs. Perfect cork - pristine. One full glass (!) was lost due to the generous and very fine sediment. Robbery!

Wife: 90p.
At overwhelmingly amazing restaurant L'Effervescent (Tokyo).

Nosen: Lätt, citrusbaserad med äppliga toner och sedan ... ingenting.
Gommen: Lätt frukt. Vattenlik. Medelsyror på en anorektisk kropp. Kort. Viss intensitet. Balanserat. Lätt jordad lakritston.
Som en lättare vit noname Bdx från ett kallt och regnigt år.

Chateau Mercian håller provning med Norditalienare (La Verdura, Yokohama): Förväntansmonstret slog i med ett magplask här. Inte alld vad jag vill ha ur en Barolo från 2009 efter att ha sett etiketten. Endast en gnutta strävhet, dvs alldeles för lite för att vara en nebbioloryggrad. För oss var detta varken intressant, typiskt eller inspirerande.
Dock, rent objektivt så är detta ett gott vin, men inget för Nebbioloälskaren.

Chateau Mercian håller provning med Norditalienare (La Verdura, Yokohama): Serverades först i champagneglas (!) 87p.
Svartröd.
Pga glasen: Liten doft.
Stor smak med tydliga drag av choklad, mörka frukter, alkoholhetta. Viss längd, men ingenting imponerande.

Samma vin i RIKTIGT glas: 89p
Glaset gör skillnad
Nosen: Rika, mörka aromer med choklad i drivor.
Palaten: Rik uppbyggnad som startar redan med vinets spännande entré. Mittgommen har en mycket stark närvaro. Intensiteten i vinet ramlar nästan utför ett stup då man svalt, men efter ett litet tag träder så äntligen fram blyga doser av läder, tobak och våta teblad.
Ett ungt vin med framtiden för sig. Bara den lite bullriga frukten lugnar ned sig, så kan detta bli riktigt bra!
