Just massive…ooozzzzze monster if there ever was such a thing…..the concentration in this wine is utterly amazing! DON'T drink this along side a Burgundy…..just don't! Fresh crushed and saturated liqueured berry fruits….teeth staining….but remarkable there is some balance here……the fruit is not too sweet…plenty of crushed rocks, asphalt tar, dusty white pepper spice, OLIVES…….killer florals of lavender, licorice, smoke meat, Kirsch liqueur…….drink this like you would a Port. A slow sipper……the pleasure will love you long time!!

Wanted something special for my last Friday as a "company" man as I am retiring on Tue 6/30/15 so everyday after that will feel like Friday! A wonderful expression of Syrah with a rich, deep bouquet and a lush long finish bursting with ripe fruit. I usually am averse to too much oak but the fruit in this wine held up to the oak vanilla influences to create a nice balance. Will hold my last bottle (if I can keep my hands off it) for a few years to see how the wood and fruit integrate.
Ha, wish I bought more while I was drawing a salary but the tariff to get it shipped to Connecticut thru a 3rd party company felt too steep. Oh well enjoy them if you have 'em.

Nicely balanced soy and bacon notes on rich, ripe foundation of luscious plum and cherry fruit. Big and bold, but nicely integrated at this point in this wine's evolution. Very good tonight.

COLOR: Typical opaque blackish-purple right to the rim. Like old oil.
NOTE: This was the last half of a bottle we CV'd twice before, and it was just so good. The nose was scorched rosewood, fresh boysenberry, cherry pipe tobacco, grilled beef, tar, blueberry compote, vanilla and cinnamon. Whoa! Mouth was scorched blueberry bush, blackberry liqueur, tar, brown sugar and molasses! Finish kept up the same theme as the mouth and then added some bruleed marshmallow and cracked granite. Amazing juice.

Very rich and layered. Pure, balanced, decadent, but not overblown. My new front runner for best Syrah I've ever had and I've had a lot.
Poured into a decanter and followed the evolution in the glass. Very drinkable at pop and pour, but layers of flavors evolve with time. Blue/black fruit, anise, Christmas spices, sweet milk chocolate, cola and pepper are all evident.

Bonhams Pre-Auction Tasting (Bonham's - San Francisco, CA): Tasting, brief note. Starts with noticeable amount of sulfur I had trouble getting past, then followed by an extreme ripeness and concentration I find difficult to enjoy.

I was in the mood for a big wine. Wowza I love these. Firing on all cylinders. Big, red and purple fruit with a hint of vanilla and lots of beef. Big but smooth on the palate with no heat that I could find. My friend, who drinks wine regularly but rarely over 20 dollars said "damn, I forget how great wine can be sometimes."

Very dark purple. Expressive and hot nose of dark fruit, scorched earth, fruit compote, leaves no doubt already that they went all the way with concentration and ripeness. On the palate full bodied with lots of sweetness stemming from the high alcohol. Impressive on the first 5 seconds but finishes short. Ripe aromatics but quickly tires at least my palate. Can't see this going well with food, but if you like mass, try this.

A totally non-compromising effort which almost has to be cut out of the bottle. Dark, perhaps a bit brooding, massive, powerful and intense are all words that describe the first impression of this effort. Still it could also be described as "elegant", if looking at the close to perfect balance and very nice integration. The nose is massive and dominated by vivid and abundant dark cool fruit. The palate is full throttle with very nice integration between its different components. Served to the right type of food this is a very food friendly wine. A stunner!

Alban takes the Syrah grape to a new level. Unbelievable extraction and opulence with a silky mouthfeel. Normally a wine of this structure would have extreme tannin, but that is not the case with this wine. This is a deep, rich and inky wine that is black as pitch. Explosive nose of white flowers and spice. Love the blue fruit that almost tastes like blue Bic pen ink (in a good way). Not showing white pepper like many other Syrahs, but that is ok by me because I don't like too much pepper on the finish. Reminds me of a new world version of a Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon. Yum!

Color: opaque indigo core -> dense ruby rim: NOT the normal appearance of a 16-year old Cali Syrah. Crazy intense bouquet of charcoal, roasted sirloin, bacon, some Alban funk (low-level here), smoke, a little black pepper and a notable floral component (violets?). Just a stupendous nose and one of the best Cali Rhone bouquets I've ever had the chance to sample. Enjoyed the stellar '01 Reva just a couple of nights ago and I'd have to say that this eclipses even that fine performance as of right now! This wine is less thickly extracted on the palate and gains a little bit in that respect: acidity is more lively that the '01. Black fruit, smoked meats and yes, that earlier tasting note of blood orange, allied with a huge palate presence and looooong finish all combine to make this one amazing, compelling wine.

I don't normally break out bouquet from the palate but in this case, that nose is just a killer: if rating seperately, I'd have the rate the nose about a 98 while the palate comes in at a more 'normal' 93-94!

Trelio with the fellas (Clovis Ca.): Here comes the Oooze Monster! Saturated purple, blackberry color....soaring nose of crushed wild berry fruit, white pepper, lavender florals, meat, tar. Huge and rich in the mouth, power, yet balanced. Dark berries, licorice, smoky asphalt(not as much as older Alban), dusty white pepper spice, kirsch liqueur. Just an amazing complex, mouthful of tasty!

Color: still a nearly opaque ruby -> deep ruby rim with just the slightest hint of garnet. Still amazingly concentrated. Explosive bouquet of olive tapenade, leather, minerals, tar and garrigue. Massive, delicious palate. Mineral driven black fruit; ouzo, olives, bacon, leather and roasted meat. Rich and fat with that 15.6% alcohol truly NOT a factor. Ridiculously long, long finish that stretches out for miles; like driving on the Alban autobahn. Grand Cru California Syrah for sure and strutting its stuff now and into the pleasantly foreseeable future.

My first Alban, and boy did it live up to the billing! Dark purple, almost inky. Decanted for an hour. Black fruit on the palette, long silky finish. Drinking well now, but probably best after another couple years in the cellar.

Dark purple red in color. High pitched aromas of blackberry and Chambord liqueur, black olive tapenade, charcoal and pepper. Full bodied with ripe and sweet black raspberry compote, graphite, low acidity and a hint of camphor on the finish. This is a very broad and round wine with mouth filling texture and depth of sweet black fruit. No mistaking where it is from.

Best Reva I've ever had! Wow this is supple, rich and expansive on the palate. So in balance everywhere, sip after sip, and it does not alter.

Some Revas have just been overwrought and imbalanced, like I was sucking the wine through a charcoal briquette. Not this time. This has all the fruit and structure in perfect balance. I'm being conservative with a 95, may go higher.
