I haven't had this wine, let alone this vintage, for a number of years. A celebratory wine tonight, reasons discussed later. Tonight's episode reaffirms the adage that "there are no great wines, just good bottles".

Aromatic and rich on the nose. More of the same on the palate. Relatively New World in style. Very rich and a bit of sweetness. But all of that in balance if a person is in the mood for it, which we were tonight. For it's style, this one hit a home run tonight. This bottle, acquired 7 years ago and cellared since, is at or near its peak now. I can't imagine it getting any better in with more time than it is tonight.

As to the celebration - my wife and I moved our youngest into college yesterday. So we're "empty nesters", at least until J-term comes along. That's not a reason for celebration per se. Actually, it leaves a bit of a vacuum. So......off to the Minnesota State Fair today, outstanding grill work (if I do say so myself) and cranking some "untouchable" wines from the cellar tonight. Filling the void. Take my score in that context, but both of us swooned over this one tonight.

drank it in a flight with 4 super Tuscans at Brandini in Koblenz with David Schwarzwälder. Tignanello 1995 (93, for me 2nd best), Solalia 1993 (92, 3rd place), Sassicaia 1993 (94p., 1st place), Sassicaia 1996 (90p., 4th place)

tannins still present, alcohol well integrated, very smooth tannins, long aftertaste, more Bx than Tuscany, elegant, at his peak

dinner with veal medaillons, darkberries, cassis, barriquenotes but well integrated, too young, only few secondary and tertiary notes, strong tannins, mighty like new world wine, Potential in 10 years, for me 96, for my friend Thomas now 91-92, later 95-98.

The sunny one. The nose needs some unpeeling, I am not getting much out of it. But I love the taste, in the palate, rich warm fruit basking in the sunshine. This is the essence of the Italian summer, a warm pleasant drive through the Tuscan countryside.

Excellent expression of a super tuscan. Still young but approachable
We enjoyed this gift with friends who drank this one with us and gave us a second bottle for cellar.

Decanted for an hour, but this wine continued to get better for another hour plus. Great nose and taste, with a long smooth finish.

Perfection! The bottle was in immaculate condition (I had purchased it on release in 1995), and the cork was pristine. The wine was deeply coloured, with an incredible nose of sweet fruits and cedar. On the palate there were layers of voluptuous dark fruit sensations, sweet tannins and perfectly balancing acidity. The finish was extraordinarily long. Wine doesn't get better than this IMHO. Drink now or hold for up to 5 years, but it's so gorgeous now that there is no need to wait.

A stunning wine, big, dark, concentrated, showing beautiful dark juicy fruit, plenty of tannins still. This wine is quite young. Good balance of oak with the fruit. Good acidity. Will age well.

no notes so no rating, but i remember thinking it clearly wasn't worth the price, i also thought i would much rather have a 100% cabernet or traditional cab blend (w/ PV, merlot, cab franc etc), or a traditional 100% sangiovese than this super tuscan blend…. maybe i just haven't yet had the right supertuscan?

This took a surprising 2 hours to open in decanter. When in its zone it showed tar, sour cherries and secondary notes on the nose. Luscious texture which was somewhere between burgundy and Bordeaux, and with an Italian acidity punch. A bit dusty on the finish. Lovely wine.

Incredible integration! Everything came together in this bottle: fruit, complexity, balance and structure. With its earthy, spicy fresh fruit combined with secondary aging components and silky tannins, this was a joy to drink.

1989 in the Rheingau (Eltville, Rheingau, Germany): Sweet nose but with some greenness of bell pepper. On the palate silky and elegant, underwood, damp earth. Quite nice.

Very nice. Still plenty left in the tank. This thing was classic Italian all the way - big, bold and sultry. Velvet in the mouth. Loads of red fruit and secondary notes of tar, ash and smoke. Wonderful aroma. Very nice - one bottle left which will get 3-5 years of cellaring before I try.

Full body and good balance. Tannic structure but also ready. Dark fruit, some vioets, oak and raisins. Descent length. Good now.

From Piero Antinori's cellars. Very expressive nose: cedar/cigar box, tobacco, blackcurrant. Still very young and fresh. Firm rim. Tannic - actually still quite closed. So fresh. Delicious and very structured. 95+

Red, with bricking in the glass.
Medium intense slightly sweet nose of red fruit and complex earthy aromas.
Palate is medium to full bodied, super smooth with silky soft tannins. Notes of red and dark fruit and with lots of complex layers. Tertiary notes starting to be quite clear.
This is ready now. It is not likely to improve. A very nice drink.
4 = outstanding
