2008 Bernard Machado Pinot Noir La Cantera

Willamette Valley more

8/17/2015 - Jack howland Likes this wine: NR

Lithe and delicate, this pinot differs from the other vintages I've had from the producer in that this one lacks the ample acidity and berry notes. This one is much more lighter bodied, with the emphasis on herbal and floral notes. However, as with the 2002 and 2005 vintages (only other ones I've had), this 2008 exhibits pleasing aromas of earth and barnyard. The color is very light colored brick and is starting to brown a bit.

With aromas of mushrooms, earth, and barnyard, this ten year old pinot was not lacking in bright fruit flavors or ample acidity. This is a great example of what a Willamette Valley pinot can do when allowed to cellar. Certainly glad I have another bottle!

One year ago to the day, we visited the Willamette Valley and dined at this amazing Italian restaurant and ordered this very bottle of wine and we’re amazed at how well it was holding up after a dozen+ years. The wine was just such a perfect accompaniment to the evening.

After returning from the trip, I researched online to see if I could buy this wine somewhere but discovered you really had to call the Willamette Valley Wine Works office to get it. Which I did. A buddy of mine and I went in on a case. We bought as much of the 2002s as we could, and filled the rest of the case up with 2005s and 2008s.

All in all, this wine exhibited aromas of dirt and earth, rose petals, and herbs at first. Flavors are actually more savory and unctuous at first rather than very fruity.

Slowly, aromas and flavors of cranberries and baking spices are showing forth.

Lastly, this is just such a great example of what a Willamette Valley pinot should be. It’s raw and unabashed and funky. I can’t wait to try the other vintages!

Good, aged Pinot, very soft and suave. Almost seems sweet, but dry. EZ by the glass and decent with food. Drink.

Much better than previously. Some wines improve and some do not. I was honestly surprised with this one. It softened yet maintained structure and fruit. In quite a nice spot right now. I think I will finish these off soon.

From magnum, just as mature as previous 750mL. Consistent notes.

Cork totally disintegrated; wish I had had an ah-so! Dark translucent cherry red with a thin watery red rim. A bit hazy. Bouquet of black tea, crayon, menthol, dried cherry cream, pine and churned earth.
Developed favors of sous bois, chalk, brandied black cherry, red hots, tea and humus. Thick midpalate leading to a soft moderate finish. Mature tannins underlie the wine with delicate structure and a nice acidity is present. Such a beautiful example of 14 year old Oregon Pinot!

Light red rosy, clear and bright. Nose is quite floral with earthy nuances of menthol, pine and berry-black tea. Palate is clean with bright acid, soft tannins and balanced alcohol with dried red berry, licorice tea, orange rind and dark earth. Drink now...

Rich, dark and surprisingly dense appearance, nose and palate. Fruit is front and center: notes of black cherry, raspberry juice, tea, cola and earthy hints of elegance. Wonderful wine, I imagine it will age gracefully with a tightly knit but soft and velvety structure, moderate acidity and plush fruit.

Cutting Edge (Cincinnati, OH): Slightly bricked. Oaky old nose. Structured. This isn't for most people, but if you're a fan of the funky aged pinot style, this is delicious. $33

PAST its prime, this wine has fallen off. Unfortunate but it happens. Green pepper vegetale smells, spice, leather --just old and short. Really nothing redeeming, old. Too bad.

Light-medium style Oregon Pinot. Softer tannins, a bit of glycerin, nice light fruit, a bit underwhelming, especially for the price. Think fruit, round, classic OR pinot. Good not great.

Good, but not great. For an 02 drinking young still, similar to the 06. Lighter style.

Really does imitate an aged burgundy. Especially nice nose, a little tart on the palate, the finish a little stunted, and overall not terribly complex. But why quibble? This is very tasty.
