By my taste, this was spot on. Smooth, cool California climate profile. Balanced across acidity, fruit, and oak with a med+ finish. I like it!

PnP, consumed over 3 hours. Appearance: Clear, pale-medium ruby. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity with developing aromas of fresh raspberries and strawberries, pine needles, cinnamon, brown sugar, and Asian spice - complex and intriguing. Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium- tannin, medium+ intensity, medium body, 13.0% abv with developing flavors of fresh red fruit and cooking spice with subtle notes of bramble with a medium+ finish.

Balance: Excellent-Outstanding
Length: Excellent
Intensity: Excellent-Outstanding
Complexity: Excellent

This is kind of a WOW wine - showing outstanding balance and exceptional intensity exhibited via vibrant red fruit and spice characteristics. Kicks ass upon opening today but will be even better in 2-3 years. Amy and Peter did well with this one- bravo.

Decanted for an hour. Olive tapanade, garrigue (I love to see that on a California wine!) fresh cracked black pepper, ripe blueberries and ripe black currant on the nose. High intensity of aromas. Palate adds dried thyme, ripe strawberries, ripe black cherries and bacon grease. Medium + intensity of flavors. Finishes with 30 seconds of lovely bitter herbs that recall the garrigue from the nose, as well as dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla.

Medium + body with medium acid and medium tannin. Drinking very well right now, and will probably stay like this for a couple more years. I don't see it getting much better with additional bottle age.

Excellent pairing with brasato al "Barolo" ;)

Vastly improved with age. Now the fruit is well integrated and in balance with the acid and tannins. If I had known this years ago I would have said that the best drinking window starts in 2023.

Very savory nose, olives and pancetta dominate, with pepper in the background. Mostly resolved on the palate, bright fruit with medium plus acidity, elegant and mid weight. Came across as linear and a bit monochromatic, not tired, but lacking some breadth. Fine tannins.

Only bottle of this, so not sure if it's a less complex vintage or is closed now. Probably best to hold for more tertiary complexity if you got em, structure is fine enough for 5 to 7 more years, I suspect.

Excellent-
On PnP it drank well enough, but not interesting. The second night after some air exposure it really drank well if you like the cooler Bordeaux style and particularly if you like Loire Cab Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon is in the lead at 75%, but here is shows more classic profile, getting a touch of cedar and pencil led and black current, upright, joined by IMO a perfect thread of chili pepper (not spice heat, but the essence) and even cocoa nib. Nice wine for the table.

14.3% abv (I'd have guessed a full point lower)

Empty bottle weight: 597g

1/27/2024 - JRockEsq Likes this wine: 90 points

Method: at tasting room

Nose: underripe strawberry, strawberry leaves, green olive meat, raw steak / plain beef jerky

Palate: underripe strawberry, strawberry leaves, faint roast beef; long finish of black pepper, dry herbs; light+ body; medium+ superfine tannins; medium acidity

Overall thoughts: Really love the savory and complex nose. The palate largely follows suit and is refreshingly elegant and very finely structured. The one significant downside in my opinion is that this lacks concentration and comes off as a bit diluted. Pretty great wine!

I believe that actual name of this is "Amy and Peter Made This Pinot Noir Kessler-Haak Vineyard," but I didn't see the bottle

Method: at tasting room

Nose: cherry, light dry earth

Palate: Cherry, cherry stem; finish of light white pepper, light bitter herbs; light body; low+ tannin; medium acidity

Overall thoughts: There just wasn't much here (but wasn't closed) and it didn't make much of an impression on me. It's enjoyable and easy drinking, but forgettable. Good wine.

Look: light lipstick red

Nose: dirty bell pepper, paprika, bell pepper rib, light strawberry, loam; so complex

Palate: fresh muddled strawberries, light leaves; medium+ finish of dry soil and white pepper; dry; light body; low tannin; medium acidity

Overall thoughts: The nose on this is so complex and fantastic. On the palate, it's not as complex, but still really love the flavor and earthy notes. Very light (but sufficiently concentrated) and elegant. Great wine!

1/27/2024 - JRockEsq Likes this wine: 89 points

Method: tasted at the tasting room

Nose: Gooseberry, peach, river rock, salt; very expressive nose

Palate: peach, rainwater; finish of faint grass, white pepper; dry; medium body; medium+ acidity; low- tannins

Overall: Saying this is merely a "fun" refreshing wine, or anything like this, is really underselling this wine. It's very expressive, tasty, and probably most importantly, as great structure with very good acidity and even just a touch of tannin. Very good wine!

Concave aromas, olives, black pepper, basil oil, soy sauce. Dark, savory and complex, pungent in a good way. Black cherry and boysenberry on the front palate, mild acidity, minerality driven, linear flavor profile, fine texture. Concentrated. Soft tannin on the finish, a bit lacking in energy, minerality focused.

Hold next bottle for 5+ years. Love the aromas, though uncertain if the palate will come alive.

Black licorice, blackberries, white pepper, charcoal and black cherry on the nose. Strawberries, lingonberry and leather on the palate. Light with some acidity and light tannins. Expecting more body for a GSM, had medium finish, and came up short on strength and structure, but still good.

2022 Black Sheep Finds Grenache Holus Bolus Lyons Vineyard

Los Olivos District more

1/30/2024 - AlphaMikeFoxtrot Likes this wine: 90 points

Light, fresh and bright. "Grenache delivers what Pinot promises" is a sentence I abhor; but tasting this, I see a bit of what that means.

Rose water, ripe red raspberries, ripe red strawberries, lemon juice and fresh mint on the nose. Smells a little velvety, with a medium + intensity of aromas. The palate adds fresh cracked black pepper and just the slightest hint of cedar wood on the finish. This clearly saw some neutral oak. Medium + intensity of flavors too.

Medium body with medium + acid and medium tannin. Drinking well now; but 6 more months to a year in the bottle wouldn't hurt it. It's also better chilled. Food wise, it worked pretty well with both clams and smoked bacon. Anything meatier would overpower it, a lesson I learned with the last vintage of this.

2016 Black Sheep Finds Syrah Holus Bolus "Franc de Pied"

Sta. Rita Hills more

1/22/2024 - Wild Bones Likes this wine: 90 points

Deep macerated blackberry and violet with wild herb and chilies faintly in the edges, red meat character emerges after an hour in the glass; fruit palette matches nose; medium body lays heavier on the edges and the medium+ acidity runs straight up and down the center of the palette. Long floral & blackberry flavors with integrated/mild tannin & medium+ acid makes for a fantastic lamb and/or a North African spiced dished.

PnP. Nose of red plum with hints of birch beer and a leather chair. Shimmering palate of black cherry, citrus peel, smoked meat, soft earth and lively energy that makes it hard to break down the flavors. Savory herbs on the finish with thyme, bay leaf, allspice, and roses flowing over fleshy dark red fruits.

Sta. Rita Hills more

12/30/2023 - Cabfrancophile Likes this wine: 95 points

Pop'n'pour, followed by several hours in a decanter. Olive, lavender, white pepper, sage and boysenberry bouquet, kind of a mix of bright and dark, fresh and savory. Dark fruit and umami on the attack, floral, nori and petrol inner aromas/flavors, lots of energy from well-integrated acidity, perfectly ripe fruit driven. Silky texture, contoured mid-palate, mid-weight and highly concentrated. No apparent oak. Long finish, lip smacking acidity, well-resolved tannins, and fruity-savory flavors intertwine.

Drink or hold. In a great spot now, though concentration and freshness will continue to give this life for years.

2021 Black Sheep Finds Pinot Noir Peter & Amy Made This

Sta. Rita Hills more

12/28/2023 - Cabfrancophile Likes this wine: 93 points

Delicious, balanced and structured classic SRH Pinot. Pop'n'pour. Loads of red fruit and baking spice on the nose, wide open and just smells great. Mid-weight on the palate, fresh red fruited attack, gentle and round mid-palate. Very good finish, more red fruit and spice. Fine yet firm tannins suggest this has at least 2-4 years of comfortable development ahead.

Maybe not super complex, but this hits the spot for an early-drinking cuvee. Really well composed and complete wine at this price point.
